DREAM 12 to feature a hexagon cage

By Zach Arnold | September 29, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

It will debut on 10/25 at Osaka Castle Hall. The idea is that DREAM will do the cage format once a year as a special attraction. They claim that the decision on using a hexagon was made based on advice from Strikeforce and based on the kind of structure that would be the most fan-friendly in terms of viewing fights in.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Katsunori Kikuno has been booked for the Osaka event.

Interesting that the Youtube video up above has 60,000 views in a couple of days.

Does a cage work for Japan? Desperate times call for desperate measures. At least that is how it feels.

  2. BM2 says:

Will it be known as DREAM Lockdown?

Maaaaan I could have sworn that they *promised* that it would be something that had never been done before in Japan. T__T

  3. urbanraida says:

DREAM shows always leave me unfulfilled, but I always look forward to them…DREAM.12 is no different, the video package that reveals the cage is freakin’ awesome and hinsts towards Zaromskis vs Tamura. Hmmm.

But we’ve DREAM.11 to get through first.

  4. Steve4192 says:

“Does a cage work for Japan?”

Greatest Common Multiple has had a lot of success using a cage in the ‘Cage Force’ series.

  5. Dave says:

Yeah, the cage isn’t new to Japan or anything here, and a lot of the fighters scheduled for this show have cage experience, if you’ll notice.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

I am aware of Cage Force. And I think the cage can work for the smaller shows. My question really pertained to the big shows that have 20,000 or more. Something tells me the cage will be a complete bust. Personally I love the ring live as it provides for a better viewing experience. However, the cage avoids those messy restarts and rope issues so for competition, the cage is best.

  7. Cage Force has been successful, but only at a niche fanbase level. I think this is a move that has a bigger purpose, and it might have something to do with the DREAM/Strikeforce alliance.

  8. liger05 says:

The video is awesome. Long term I would be shocked if the big shows went from the ring to a cage in Japan. Cant see that happening at all!!

  9. 45 Huddle says:

The DREAM and SF alliance keeps getting talked about with basically no real action. Too many moving parts. SF isn’t even capable of putting out cards in the US with reasonable notice. How can they work with a Japanese Company on top of that? Not to mention that each fanbase is so different that to even attempt to mesh the two companies is a joke.

Lastly, unless they plan on only having Black Athletes, having a white ring with a bunch of lighter skinned athletes is going to come across really badly on TV. They trying to blind people? The white ring canvas in Pride was bad enough. Having the sides white too will make the game of hockey be visually great by comparison.

    I meant white cage

  10. […] — much like the Super Hulk Tournament with Jose Canseco was — than anything else. However, Strikeforce was apparently influential in the decision to try the cage, so perhaps it has something do with their “alliance.” I don’t know, but moving […]

  11. sammy says:

    “Pride was bad enough.”

Oh right, the white ring really didnt work for Pride. Thats why they were the top MMA organization (BY FAR) for nearly 10 straight years.

Oh right, 45 Huddle said that. He probably thought UFC:Battle in the Bayou WAS better than the Pride 2000 GP. Dumbass.

  12. ilostmydog says:

LOL @ somehow extrapolating an opinion that a white cage/white ring isn’t aesthetically pleasing into a Pride vs. UFC argument.

  13. bandido says:

It will never end. In 200 years time MMA arguments will still end in retorts of “LOL TUF n00b!!”

  14. 45 Huddle says:

    ilostmydog & sammy,

You are the second person on this posting to mention the UFC. sammy was the first. Looks like you two are the one starting it.

    sammy,

That is MY opinion on the white mat. I have never been a fan. Strikeforce had a part of their mat that was white also, and it was blinding. That has nothing to do with the athletes that competed in Pride. I swear, I can’t even mention my preferences of a color of the mat (literally) without somebody bashing me for somehow being a UFC fanboy. Perhaps it’s people like you who are the problem. Dumbass.

I’m not a big fan of the WEC mat either, and if DREAM decided to go BLUE, I would have said that too….

  15. ilostmydog says:

    45,

You seem confused. I was not attempting to start anything. I was merely laughing at sammy’s ridiculous post.

  16. Cho says:

Dream plans on using the hexagon cage(which strikeforce influenced them do to their alliance) once every year.

  17. 45 Huddle says:

    My apologies ilostmydog.

    Cho…. Race bait? No.

  18. Cho says:

yes you are 45 does not suprised cuz you think even think it’s okay to say the n word.

  19. 45 Huddle says:

Then tell me, how would I race bait with my comment? I’m really curious to see what you come up with….

  20. Dave says:

45, I’m pretty sure he is talking about some argument from long ago.

  21. Cho says:

Don’t act like you don’t know what you said 45. Your fooling know one but yourself.

  22. Mr.Roadblock says:

Wow. Awesome video. I wonder if this will lead to Fedor vs Overeem in Japan for the SF belt. They could tape delay it and put it on TV in the States later that night, like the old PRIDE fights. CBS & Showtime both tape delay the fights to the West coast, who what’s a few more hours?

I haven’t been very impressed with Dream or Sengoku to this point. Hopefully one or both improves going forward. I like the idea of a white cage. I think it will look great on TV. I like a cage on TV but prefer a ring live.

  23. […] — much like the Super Hulk Tournament with Jose Canseco was — than anything else. However, Strikeforce was apparently influential in the decision to try the cage, so perhaps it has something do with their “alliance.” I don’t know, but moving […]

  24. >based on the kind of structure that >would be the most fan-friendly in terms >of viewing fights in.

    Fan friendly? In what way?
    Better fights? Doubt it.

    Better sight lines?
    Not even close.
It doesnt matter for TV but for those at the event, you have a lot of dead spots with the colums, some fences are hard to see through if the angle isnt head on, etc…

So i fail to see how its more fan friendly.

If this is part of their partnership with Strikeforce, then once a year shouldnt be a problem.

I have HUGE problem with 3x5mins rounds.
It changes the fights even more than the cage and its gonna be great for guys that get gassed early like Manhoef.
