Gina Carano comments on her career post-Cyborg loss

By Zach Arnold | August 28, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

Here it is:

I wanted to take time to collect my thoughts and speak from the heart rather than spew out some cliché anecdote about a tough loss. I know I am a better fighter than the way I performed that night and was heartbroken to not give more to those who have been inspired. However, I find some relief in knowing that this has never been only about me, and now more than ever I feel freedom to learn and grow at my own pace. I make it a point to constantly remind myself throughout this journey who I am, what I am doing, and why. Life is the most amazing gift and I want to live it for the right reasons. To my family, coaches, management… thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me, loving and encouraging me. Also a special thanks to the fans who support me from their computers at home, watch me on television and scream for me in the stadiums. Because of you, barriers have been broken down and you have inspired me to believe in a larger dream. Congratulations to Cris Cyborg and the women of MMA who have a great platform to shine. I am more excited than ever for female fighters and this amazing sport which has transformed my life. God Bless.

  1. 45 Huddle says:

I think she performed exactly to her level. I can’t see anything being much different in the future.

  2. Jemaleddin says:

@45 huddle: Really? That’s your response? We get one of the nicest, most heart-felt and genuine responses from a fighter who just lost a HUGE fight in a devastating way and your only thought is to shit on her?

How are things in the UG?

  3. Asa says:

Besides the usual from Huddle, I’m worried that this sounds like a resignation letter.

  4. 45 Huddle says:

Sorry if I don’t get all wishy washy over a female fighter spilling her “feelings”. She lost and looked horrible doing so.

Her little blog is nice, but it sounds more like something that belongs on Oprah, and not out of the mouth of a fighter.

  5. Jemaleddin says:

@Asa: I’m hoping she’s just trying to resign from “the face of women’s MMA” – an office that I don’t think she was ever comfortable with.

@45 Huddle: The point – you miss it. Say hi to your peeps at Sherdog for me!

  6. death march says:

Gina got a beatdown from a better fighter. Sorry if you bought into the Gina hype but she finally fought someone who was a threat to her and not a hand picked up-and-comer. That being said I hope Gina comes back stronger then ever and makes another run to the title.

  7. Detective Roadblock says:

That looks like a publicist wrote it.

I’ve never been a Gina fan. Funny how her supporters get bent out of shape so easily. If you like stuff like that Jebedjah you should buy some Dr Phil books. I’ll bet they’re full of disingenuous BS.

  8. Robert Poole says:

“That looks like a publicist wrote it.”

So she’s not smart enough on her own to collect her thoughts and write something that sounds so educated?

Sounds like a pretty pathetic charge to me. If she wanted a publicist to do this, she could have had them respond much closer to the date of the fight. People have publicists make statements when they can’t think on their feet but this far after the fight she would have had ample time to collect her thoughts and reflect on the situation.

Unless you are insinuating that she is stupid.

  9. frankp316 says:

She’s not quitting. She has two fights left on her contract at $125K each.

  10. klown says:

    I’m with Asa.

What’s conspicuous is the lack of anything future-oriented. Usually, after a loss, it’s all about hitting the gym again tomorrow, learning from your mistakes, coming back stronger, looking forward to your next fight… none of that here.

  11. Asa says:

I wish her the best, but being the Maxim-airbrushed female-face of MMA is probably the most miserable job on the planet, simply because of the fans.

Mixing their expectations and prejudices with your own self-image and -esteem under an promoter’s umbrella sounds like shit.

But she has some serious talent. I wish her the best.

  12. Asa says:

PS – that’s not insulting you Huddle. I’m talking about fans being hostile towards her in general when all she did was try something she liked.

  13. Zack says:

One good win from each lady and the rematch will be better. That was a really exciting round, and even though she got smashed, I don’t see how it’s anymore embarrassing than Faber/Brown 1 or Torres/Bowles.

  14. Asa says:

If she were to come back, the rematch could be huge.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

They need to match her up with a competant female fighter who is her same size. If they feed her a can to set-up the rematch, that stinks.

I just don’t see her heart being into it anymore. She never had the fighter’s mentality to begin with. Or at least that was my perception.

  16. Robert Poole says:

    Zack –

You’re right… it definitely isn’t any more embarrassing than a top male star getting pummeled…

I don’t think Cyborg is invincible anymore… that’s what I got out of the Carano fight. Sure she did overpower Gina but she showed some sizeable chinks in her armor and that’s a goal if Carano wants to train on and aim for, that is reachable.

She’s just going to have to decide… “Am I a fighter? or Am I a Model?” Because if she’s a fighter, she needs to lay off some of the extracurricular stuff and get back in the gym for a considerable amount of time.

  17. Joseph says:

    45 Huddle’s Problem,

He thinks Gina FINALLY fought a good opponent, since you know, there are a ton of Cyborg’s at 145 out there in female MMA.

  18. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Eh, she lost, she’s depressed, she’ll come back, and people will be all googly eyes and pant tented all over again.

  19. Mr.Roadblock says:

To Whomever our latest troll is,

    Suicide is an option.

  20. BSP says:

It’s interesting seeing people’s reaction to this. I was never terribly impressed with Carano’s fighting, but I think this is a very classy statement. She doesn’t make excuses and is quick to move the spotlight over to Cyborg and the other women in MMA.

And to the troll: Just so there’s no mistake, we’re laughing at you, not with you.

Great job on the site, Zach.

  21. wolf says:

Good honest response Gina, but I feel that unless fighters are tested before and most important after a fight for Steroids, we will see terrible Injuries and possible Death’s in this type of Combat. You where put up against an actual Cyborg, fueled by enhancement drugs that turned her into this Musclebound being with almost super human strength.

  22. Black Dog says:

I agree with the Detective; that missive looks like it was ghost-written. It doesn’t sound like Gina speaking the way she normally does.

Perhaps these were her thoughts, just edited and reset for the readers, I don’t know. In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if she gets back to the gym and gets to work. One loss should not end her career; question is, will she get better training than what she had for Cyborg? Remains to be seen.

  23. luckymonster says:

I do think it’s heart felt and no asa she is not hanging it up and for the rest of you knuckle heads your probably just shock because she is intelligent enough to put a sentence together. Gina glad to see your back in the gym.

  24. JackTheRipper says:

I never seen a fighter leave the ring without congratulating its opponent right after a fight. I seen even sore loosers who still give an interview, but Gina just left and igored everyone who saw her. I at least was expecting an interview but she left, she is worst than a sore looser. Then she goes on myspace and posts some BS? No, the public wanted to hear it after the fight in words not in text. You think we should just hear your fights in the radio instead of tv? Or just read the results? No, you owe us an apology for running crying in defeat, you humilitated your fans like myself who went to see you fight and at least wanted an interview. Sorry looser.

    • JBeck says:

Jack the Ripper, that was one of the worst posts yet. She doesn’t owe anyone “Jack”. She might owe Cyborg a hand shake after the match but she doesn’t have to explain anything to you or anyone else.

Who really cares what you wanted? Not me and not anyone else. Are you the one out there fighting and getting things broken? No, you’re not. Just like you said, you were in the stands. People deal with stuff differently and you expect her to bend to YOUR needs?! You are out of your mind.

  25. Olympian says:

What’s wrong with a little marketing? If I didn’t have dreams about dipping Gina’s toes in butter – I would NEVER pay money to see her fight.

That being said, she’s been screwing around and fighting set-ups so far. Now it’s time to get to work. Besides, 2nd best is no reason to quit. She needs to go get that belt back. What am I supposed to do with that ticket money under my pillow. Buy more weed?

  26. Olympian says:

PS. I’m with Jack.. As a fan it was embarrassing for me that MY Champian just left? She couldn’t get it together enough to make a comment? What about all the girls she beat. They made comments? Comments are part of the job. She lost my respect there. God she’s beautiful, but that just was not nice.
