Despite spam and trolls, we’re here with the latest headlines

By Zach Arnold | August 23, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

A combination of trolls and spammers who flooded our site over the weekend made our life a little annoying, but we’re back and ready to keep things going. If your comment gets caught in moderation, don’t worry about it — just get a hold of me through the contact form. Right now, our site is getting bombarded with a lot of spam from Russia (I have no clue why).

Ryo Chonan defeated Jutaro Nakao by unanimous decision at today’s DEEP event in Tokyo at Korakuen Hall. In the semi-main event, Takafumi Otsuka defeated Dokonjonosuke Mishima after 3R by a unanimous decision for the DEEP Featherweight title. Masakazu Imanari defeated Tomohiko Hori after 3R by a unanimous decision for the DEEP Bantamweight title. Bernard Ackah KO’d Ryushi Yanagisawa in R1.

Onto some other media headlines…

  1. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

I nearly went up to that Combat Zone event, but I didn’t hear about it until day of, and I didn’t want to make the drive with the possibility of not getting in the door (other people weren’t available to head out as early as I was).

I’m starting to feel guilty about all the local MMA shows that I’m not patronizing yet, they keep popping up. There’s this one, a regular in Braintree, there’s an occasional one up the street at Lido, and the big one at the Shriners, not to mention others that I’m probably missing.

I wonder if the establishment of an actual commission will help or hurt this boom in shows here. Worst case they move up the coast to New Hampshire, I guess.

  2. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Example, this is the one-month-out schedule here:

August 21, 2009- Combat Zone 29 from Rockingham Park in Salem, NH.

August 21, 2009- AFO “Clash of the Titans” from Sheraton Braintree Hotel in Braintree, MA.

August 22, 2009- Wartown Beatdown 3 from Platinum Premier in Worcester, MA.

August 29, 2009- Untamed 29 from the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough, MA.

September 11, 2009- NA Fight League “Pavement Wars 2? from Maximum Capacity in Chicopee, MA.

September 12, 2009- Cage Fighting Xtreme CFX5 from the Megaplex in Mansfield, MA.

September 19, 2009- Global Fight League from the Capitol Theater in Concord, NH.

September 26, 2009- World Championship Fighting WCF8 from the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, MA.

Plus two submission grappling tournaments. (Thanks northeastmma.net for the list that makes me more guilty every time I look at it.)

  3. 45 Huddle says:

    From Dave Meltzer: ”

–B.J. Penn has agreed to face Diego Sanchez on 11/14 in Manchester, England for the UFC lightweight title. This will be on Spike, not PPV.”

This is going to be a crazy 2 weekends of MMA in a row. Lesnar/Carwin & Ortiz/Coleman is the very next weekend.

    Jeremy (not that Jeremy),

Like you, I find one of the biggest problems is not knowing about the shows with proper timing. I know there are websites out there that have upcoming events, but a lot of times they are not properly updated or not a full list of upcoming shows.

I’ve gone to two of the Bellator shows because they were a cheap ticket and I wanted to support the sport (despite no real card being announced). But that was very well publicized and I knew about it before tickets even went onsale.

Something needs to be done to help out these smaller organizations. I don’t think a formal organization…. But at least a website of somesort that is in constant contact with these promoters who helps them get the word out on their shows.

  4. Detective Roadblock says:

Someone actually thought of that about 12 years ago, 45. It’s called MMA.tv. They even have a forum section. 🙂

  5. Preach says:

Floyd once again shows how big of an idiot he is:

“All the best fighters are Latin or Black. We dominate the sport of boxing.”

Oh really? I’m not sure, but i could swear that the heavier weightclasses are all being dominated by white boxers, and that many of the lighter titles are being held by asians…

“MMA is for beer bellied bar brawlers who don’t care about brain damage”

Well, Floyd, you obviously don’t have to worry about brain damage either… i mean, what’s done is done, right?

  6. Brandt says:

Detective Roadblock beat me to it…MMA.tv has every event listed on their site.

    http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=events.home

You can even break it down by state.

  7. 45 Huddle says:

I’m a fan of the The Underground, but that website is out of a 1996 time warp. The events page, while comprehensive, is hardly what needs to be done to get information out there on these events.

Things like automatic email alerts would be helpful. Put in your email address, zip code, and the radius willing to travel, and updates are automatically sent to you, along with ticket information.

That website sometimes seems more useful for managers trying to find fights for their fighters, and not really geared towards getting as many fans at these small shows.

I’m not saying I have all the answers for it, but there is definitely more that can be done then the way their system is set-up.

It’s not very web 2.0, and I think it suffers because of that.

  8. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Breaking it down by state is pointless. Maybe that’s meaningful someplace like Orgeon or California where there isn’t a state line within 200 miles of you, but there are six states within 90 minutes of me, and I don’t mind driving that far for an event, as long as I know that it’s going on.

  9. Fluyid says:

Did anyone see the boxing on HBO last night?

What did you think of the lopsided scorecard in the main event?

  10. jr says:

Paulie Malignaggi was robbed. This carnydom has to stop or the last shovelful of dirt will cover boxing’s reputation with the public

  11. Detective Roadblock says:

That’s a pretty good idea, 45. Email Kirik. His email is president at the addy.

  12. CapnHulk says:

Smart move by Kenny Florian with the eye poking comment. He simultaneously affirms and distances himself from the statement his brother made.

“Oh yeah, he totally poked me in the eye a bunch, but that’s not the reason why I lost.”

These sort of post-fight accusations seem to be all the rage these days.

  13. 45 Huddle says:

The worst part about the HBO Boxing was the commentators. At least Paulie was honest and telling it like it is. He earned most people’s respect. The HBO Team did not. Their attitude was basically: “Well, we know boxing is corrupt, so you can’t talk about that…. What else is new?”

These are the type of events that leave a real bad taste in fans mouths. A lot of fans will say they won’t watch boxing again, and most will come back. However, each time something like this obvious happens, I do think boxing does slowly lose a few fans. And when this happens a few times a year, it does take a toll on the sport.

Golden Boy is actually to blame here. They are the one’s who set everything up.

    http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum_framed.posts&forum=1&thread=1511569&page=2

About 3/4th way down the page, DannyOcean has a post (never linked where he got it from). It outlines all the crap Golden Boy pulled going into this fight.

It does prove one thing…. Golden Boy Promotions is just like the rest of the boxing promoters. Just down right corrupt.

When people talk co-promotion for MMA and about not giving one promotion too much control…. It’s examples like these that a concept like the UFC is a good one….

And it’s all about MOTIVATION OF MONEY. Golden Boy gains to profit on their fighter winning a fight against a guy they don’t have signed. Therefore, they have ALL THE INCENTIVE to do dubious things. When a promoter (like the UFC) has all their fighters signed who compete against each other…. That gives much less incentive to try and rig a decision. And it helps the sport in the long run.

  14. Dave says:

I’m actually on board with 45’s idea, and completely agree that the MMA world is not very web 2.0. Maybe by the time we get into web 3.0 shit they’ll be giving us stuff like we can find for nearly any other product right now.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

I’m actually not a big fan of smaller MMA shows, so this isn’t something I would pursue (nor do I have the technical understanding to pull it off)….

There needs to be a website that is like a one-stop shop for all smaller MMA shows in North America. It would have:

    1. Listing of all the shows, with multiple ways to search (including the email alert thing I put above).

    2. Ability to purchase tickets on the website itself. A lot of these smaller shows occur at convention center type of places and they end up selling the tickets on their own website. That’s extremely non-productive. This website could have the infostructure set up to sell the tickets for the events. And all the money goes to the promoters. The site could charge like a $2 fee per ticket to take some money on top of that. For the events that do use ticketmaster, a direct link can be shown.

    3. If a promotion wanted to, it could set up it’s website on this site. Instead of going to King of the Cage or Reality Fighter’s websites, you could check out their webpage within this portal.

    4. Fighter profiles and links to YouTube Videos. Basically, it can be a place that showcases the up & coming fighters. It doesn’t need to have a fight finder like Sherdog to pull this off. Even if 5 or 10 hot prospects in each division are showcased with a small profile and some YouTube Videos, it can work.

EliteXC kind of (sort of) went in this direction with their website. However, they failed miserably. They didn’t really know the sport enough to get it done properly.

The idea of having a formalized league of smaller companies would never work. Companies are not stable enough to pull it off. But a website that could unify them and strengthen the smaller shows of MMA really has not been done properly. It would also help these younger fighters at least get their name out there to the hardcore fans.

    ***********

It’s weird, MMA was kept alive because of the online fanbase. And yet MMA outside of the UFC really hasn’t embraced the full functions of the web. Strikeforce’s website is just downright pitiful. It does nothing to promote their product. Not everybody needs to spend millions on a website like EliteXC, but with video hosting sites like YouTube, and affordable web templates out there, this stuff can be done for much cheaper.

I’m sure there are even more ideas that I’m not thinking of…. But the MMA community is very scattered compared to other online communities. And it doesn’t seem like anybody has taken the intiative to maximize the sports potential online….

  16. Dave says:

God, EliteXC pissed away so much money on that website. When you see that on their SEC filings it’ll make you do a double-take.

Part of the problem was they only promoted things that they bought out, which was a lot but not comprehensive.

  17. MK says:

About the Paulie-Diaz fight, I am not here to defend Golden Boy because they have many faults but you can’t blame them for having certain officials for the fight, its not up to them…thats unless if you are willing to say that Golden Boy bribed the Texas commision, thats a very big accusation even in a sport like boxing.

The worst part out of all of this is that nothing will get done to change things, there is zero accountability for officials who will continue to score fights for the hometown and/or prized asset of the big promoter because it helps their career indirectly. There should be a rule that if you have a fight between two top ten fighters then all the judges should be from neutral states. Also, judges should have their scores reviewed by an impartial organization…but none of this will happen.

  18. Detective Roadblock says:

I’ve been saying forever, Golden Boy + HBO is the worst thing to ever happen to boxing.

  19. Fluyid says:

“I am not here to defend Golden Boy because they have many faults but you can’t blame them for having certain officials for the fight, its not up to them…”

We were just discussing in here the other day how the UFC can dictate officials to commissions. Are there any parallel concerns?

  20. Alan Conceicao says:

We were just discussing in here the other day how the UFC can dictate officials to commissions. Are there any parallel concerns?

Of course not. The UFC only has MMA’s best interests in mind, you know. As long as those interests coincide with their interests, which are MMA’s interests anyways because the UFC is so singularly important to MMA. Haven’t we learned already? 😉

  21. Detective Roadblock says:

We get that you hate UFC and everything hey do, Alan. UFC does a tremendous job of promoting and protecting th interests of MMA as a sport. Golden Boy looks to squeeze every last penny out of boxing before the sport dies.

  22. Alan Conceicao says:

LOL, there’s a big difference between “hating the UFC” and recognizing that they aren’t paragons of virtue. So long as the less than beneficial things for the sport that they do make money, they will do them. Is it awesome when they make fights like Griffin/Silva and Lesnar/Carwin? Hell yes, it is. Will it be super awesome for the sport when Kimbo Slice ends up co-headlining a PPV a few months down the line? Probably not, but no one will care. All that they’ll worry about are PPV buyrates, and they’ll argue that anything that pulls huge buys is a good thing for the sport and will gain it mainstream credibility. We’ve all been down that road. Not interested in rehashing it much.

  23. 45 Huddle says:

In the UFC’s defense…. The top level MMA judges aren’t very good. The mid-tier guys that the athletic commissions would think about putting in there are even worse. It’s the lesser of two evils really.

  24. Fluyid says:

One thing that strikes me is that the UFC has Marc Ratner, and I guarantee you that he has big-time credibility with the commissions. When he asks to have someone be an official, it carries weight.

  25. Detective Roadblock says:

Wait a minute. Are you trying to use Kimbo to bash UFC? Are you high on drugs? Elite XC headlined two CBS shows with him. Elite XC the predecessor to your beloved Strikeforce. Kimbo who has as much credibility as Gina Carano, he actually fought better competition than her. You will go to no end to bash UFC. Something doesn\’t even need to have roots in reality for you to say it.

Now the rumor is SF is going to book Mayhem Miller for their 185lb title. Are you going to be upset by that? Are you going to say it is just because of Bully Beatdown? Really Jacare should get the shot first, no?

  26. Alan Conceicao says:

Wait a minute. Are you trying to use Kimbo to bash UFC?

The UFC does what is in MMA’s best interests, because what is in MMA’s best interests is what is in the UFC’s best interests. I see what you’re saying; Kimbo Slice fighting, down the line, against one of their aging stars to give them a win is Good For The Sport (TM). Justification will come later – “Legitimate questions! Kimbo proved himself on TUF! He’s just as valid as Carano!” Validity as a fighter, again, being projected in the form of TV ratings.

Now the rumor is SF is going to book Mayhem Miller for their 185lb title. Are you going to be upset by that?

I’m more upset that promotional belts are allowed to exist and that they’re treated with any respect. I don’t care who the Strikeforce middleweight champion is anymore than I care who the Pancrase featherweight title holder is. Neither one is a real champ.
