Comments: Scott Coker talks about UFC and ‘the war’ with Strikeforce

By Zach Arnold | August 20, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

With Coker indicating that perhaps Fedor may not fight until 2010, we needed some heavyweight excitement… but it’s in UFC, with news of Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin on 11/21 in Las Vegas. The semi-main event on that show could be Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman.

  1. Dave says:

I’ve always liked Coker and interviews like this solidify why; he admits that this is what he wished for and that it is overwhelming, but he will do his best to work it out, all while not feeding into Dana’s baiting for a ‘war.’

It is a shame they couldn’t work together, as Coker’s humility proves to be a great foil for Dana’s brash attitude and vice versa.

  2. Alan Conceicao says:

It doesn’t sound like Fedor won’t fight. Just that he’s not having his “big fight”, which is the Overeem bout.

They have a lot of faith in Brock. Carwin is a far different competitor class wise than the last two guys he’s fought, imo. If he loses now, it’ll be interested to see how it affects his ability to draw.

  3. Dave says:

Carwin is a tough guy that Brock’s size advantage won’t affect, which is a big deal. It was size and strength that stopped Mir, but Carwin will not have that same problem (unless he can’t stop takedowns and is useless against his back, which we aren’t sure of yet, are we?).

  4. Joseph says:

    Zack,

Fedor is still fighting in Oct/Nov, all the video mean is that he won’t get a title shot (fight against Overeem) until 2010. You should probably fix that in your headline, since you know, rumors start flying around.

  5. 45 Huddle says:

He mentioned Sergei as one of his potential opponents. I really hope not. That guy looked so out of shape against Monson and put up a pitiful performance.

Lesnar & Ortiz on the same card might do 1.5 Million buys. That’s a huge event.

I don’t see Carwin being a true threat to Lesnar. Lesnar dies everything better then Carwin. With that said, I still want to see the fight as it could be fireworks.

    Dave,

Coker might not be talking smack, but the Showtime executive is. I personally think Coker is too overwhelmed to know his hand from his foot. Basically, he doesn’t have time to web figure out how to combat the UFC problem. I’m still waiting on his next card to be announced. It’s like 35 days away and not one fight has been announced.

  6. tojn says:

Gilbert Yvel will spank Fedor for around , It will be entertaining..But in the end He will get subed by a bloody fedor

  7. 45 Huddle says:

Gilbert Yvel and Paul Buentello are UFC bound. At least those are the rumors. Nothing has been officially announced yet…

  8. Mark says:

Carwin and Lesnar is going to be a huge fight. Lesnar’s first fight coming off of UFC 100 is bound to be a huge seller even if he fights a punching bag because of the buzz Lesnar gained, so putting him against a pretty popular fighter will be big business. And plus who else is there for Lesnar if Fedor isn’t coming. It will be interesting to see since, while both guys are hyped to death, they’re both relatively new fighters so we’re going to find a flaw in someone’s game. I think Carwin can suffer a loss much better though. Carwin is young enough to go back to square one and come back strong, but this is the peak of Lesnar’s career since he’s in his mid-30s so if he gets blown out there may be no coming back. Especially since so many fans hate him to begin with and are salivating to see him fail.

As for Ortiz-Coleman, that is not a draw. Sorry, but Mark Coleman is not a draw, and Tito has been gone a hell of a long time so who knows what his market value is now. Plus with Dana bashing Tito in the press for over a year his words may come back to haunt him, since this will be the first guy he’s buried coming back to work for him. It might not have any effect at all, and maybe the only people who care about Dana’s opinions are the hardcore fans who are the minority of PPV buyers. I also honestly believe Mark Coleman is going to win this fight, so how embarrassing is it going to be for Tito in his triumphant return to lose to somebody nobody takes seriously like Coleman? And what’s Tito going to do next anyway, have a rematch with Rashad who will beat him now? Fight Machida again, a guy who embarrassed him? Time has moved passed Tito Ortiz. They got lucky that Tito was able to sell himself as a threat to the newer fans in ’05-’06, but those fans are educated now and don’t buy into his BS.

  9. Shane says:

    Mark,

Shane Carwin is actually two years older than Brock Lesnar. Think you’re getting mixed up with Cain Velasquez who is in his mid-twenties.

  10. Detective Roadblock says:

How could anyone justify Fedor vs Yvel?

  11. Dave says:

The same way you can justify Fedor vs. Anybody not in the top 20 because there isn’t much competition for him outside of UFC?

  12. 45 Huddle says:

Fedor vs. Overeem, Werdum, Rogers, or Monson are the only fights that are worthy at this point. And the Werdum fight still feels like a squash on paper.

With Shane Carwin, it really feels like it’s not or never for him. Which is very different then Cain, who I think could still rebound from a big loss.

Speaking of Cain, the rumor is that his next fight will now be Ben Rothwell, which I think is a great test for him. Rothwell is hard to takedown, which might force Cain to stand and strike with him.

  13. Ivan Trembow says:

Carwin is going to have a hard time winning against Lesnar as long as he (Carwin) continues to block punches with his face, which he has a tendency to do in his fights, even in his big victory over Gonzaga.

  14. Joseph says:

    45 Huddle Says:

Coker might not be talking smack, but the Showtime executive is.

Umm, Coker is not going to fall for Danas word games and all the Showtime guy said was that the UFC is good at spreading rumors.

    Nothing more than that.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

2 Hours of Undercard fights commercial free on SpikeTV for UFC 103.

This is the same PPV going against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

  16. The Gaijin says:

I’m loving that Rothwell was chided as an undeserving opponent that proved nothing and was a non-factor when fighting Arlovski, but now that he’s been starched by Arlovski and fighting in the UFC, he’s suddenly legit and a great test for a guy that’s one fight from fighting for the strap.

I’m not saying he’s not a good test or opponent, but that all of the people who came out of the woodwork to deride him are now saying what a great opponent he is now.

  17. Alan Conceicao says:

LOL, well, yes. Imagine if he won!

  18. Ultimo Santa says:

The turning point might be Lesnar’s ability to TAKE a punch.

Let’s face it, the UFC hasn’t exactly matched him up against many guys with dynamite in their hands. And Carwin hits very, very hard (ask Gonzaga).

If Carwin can unload early and get some shots through, this could be another R1 win for him in under 90 seconds.

If course that’s a big ‘if’.

Is Carwin even training full time now? It would be kind of odd to have a virtual unknown take Lesnar’s title…a guy who doesn’t even get paid enough to quit his engineering job!

This could be a new trend for the UFC: get former WWE stars to fight McDonalds employees who only train MMA on the weekends.
