I can guarantee that no fighter would ever do this to Dana White

By Zach Arnold | August 16, 2009

It’s amusing, but cruel:

The Strikeforce promoter is usually calm and cool under the worst of circumstances, and the weeks leading up to the show featured plenty of them, as several matches had to be rearranged for various reasons. But he thought he had a nightmare scenario on his hands the night before the show.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Friday night, on a show where every major match but the main event fell apart, Coker got a phone call from the Santos camp. They were apologetic, saying that they had no idea beforehand, but that when the commission was testing Santos, they found out that she was pregnant and the fight was off.

Coker fell for it … though later he was told it was a prank. Good thing for Coker – and for Santos.

There’s talk that Marloes Coenen will get a title shot against Cyborg. That’s a good choice. Coenen’s a veteran and skill-wise will pose some problems.

  1. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Honestly, I don’t even find that remotely funny.

  2. Wolverine says:

    I’m speechless

  3. BM2 says:

Stay tuned for Fedor to attempt this joke

  4. 45 Huddle says:

Strikeforce needs to employ the WEC model. Which is put the #1 contender fight on the same card as the title fight. Or at least within one card.

Who is Coenen? If you give talented but unheard of fighters a shot at your belt, you get the Mike Brown effect, where it can take a few title defenses before anybody even realizes the fighter is legit.

  5. Wolverine says:

Coenen is decent, however she just lost to Cindy Dandois (1-0) and looked horrible in that fight.

Toughill deserves the shot at Cyborg first. Not only did she KOed Coenen back in Japan, but she has been on a pretty good win streak recently.

  6. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

What does the Strikeforce roster of women in-house look like right now? IIRC they only hired the fighters from EXC that hadn’t fought Carano yet, and I doubt that they’re going to bring in a competitor from outside to challenge this title.

  7. Adam Smith says:

Lol, 45 Puddle right on time saying Strikeforce needs to be more like a Zuffa product.

Do they give you guys a script, or do you manage to come up with this stuff yourself?

Thank God Coker did not have a heart attack. That is some cold blooded humor and I can imagine the sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.

  8. 45 Huddle says:

    Adam,

so you think it’s smart business to bring in a complete unknown for a title shot?

People need to be familiar with the fighter before they step into a title fight. This is simple promotional stuff.

And your costant name calling is childish and old. And you typically make laughable points right after that too.

  9. Coyote says:

I think they Cris have to take a nap with the tittle for now. Now is the time for división to grow.

    Marloes Coenen vs Erin Tounhill
    Rosi Sexton vs Sarah Kaufman
    Shayna Baszler vs ……..

They have to make the división.

  10. Wolverine says:

Rosi fights at 125 lbs and is probably signed with Bellator, althouh apparently their 2nd season has been put off till next year.

  11. Adam Smith says:

    45 H,

Come on man, you are showing your ignorance. A real fan of mixed martial arts already knew who Gegard Mousasi was and what the likely outcome of the fight. Crawl out from under your UFC shock troop rock and educate yourself my friend. It can be valuable in making arguments

Bet Type / Wager ID Date Bet/Risk Payout Won Status

    MMA/G- (R Sobral vs. G Mousasi) G Mousasi Money Line -230 2009-08-15 23:35 Win

    And other stuff…

Some of us don’t need a Pravda style propaganda machine to form opions and make judgements on who we are going to watch and support.

Go back to TUF. It’s easily digested and appeals to the UFC fan demographic Dana White has created.

Sorry the rest of mma is a bit harder to decipher for “fans” like yourself.

You don’t know what you are missing.

    Carry on soldier.

  12. 45 Huddle says:

That is where you are flat out wrong. Fans like me know how good Mousasi is. Know how good or bad the guys in DREAM and Sengoku are. It’s the casual fans who have no clue. And they outnumber people like me 20:1…..

MMA promotions can’t be built on fans like me. For that very reason, not showcasing an upcoming title contender hurts Strikeforce.

Even HBO gets this concept. They have often put two guys in seperate fights on the same show, and when they win, they put the bigger fight on PPV.

Unknown challengers are a huge no-no to combat sports.

  13. Scott R. says:

    Adam

45 mentioned Coenen, not Mousasi. Regardless, if you are trying to capture a large audience and not just the hardcore “true” MMA fans like yourself, you need to hype up non-mainstream fighters. 45 made a good point about Zuffa’s mistake with Brown (maybe you missed that in his post). I think message board posters have a hard time coming to grips that they aren’t the target audience.

But I get it. You watched MMA before TUF. Congratulations. So did a lot of other people.

  14. Ivan Trembow says:

“I can guarantee that no fighter would ever do this to Dana White”

Agreed, since he won’t employ female fighters due to the fact that “nobody wants to see” female MMA.

  15. Scott R. says:

    Ivan,

Is their a specific Dana White quote where he said “Nobody wants to see” female MMA? All I have seen is him mentioning the talent pool isn’t deep enough.

  16. Ivan Trembow says:

Yes, you can look it up on the UFC section of Yahoo Sports. I believe the exact quote was something along the lines of, “Nobody wants to see two women beating each other up” or, “Nobody wants to see two women punching each other in the face.”

  17. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

He’s definitely said something similar to that. Whether what he says means anything at all is a constant source of mirth and merriment for all though.

He’s not making the final decisions, and he hasn’t gotten used to it yet.

  18. Steve4192 says:

LOL at no one ever messing with teh Dana.

We have already seen Rampage Jackson cockpunch him and Dan Henderson constantly messes with him. BLAF doesn’t seem to mind the occasional practical joke.
