MMA Live 7/9 from Las Vegas

By Zach Arnold | July 10, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

I’d link the show here, but guess what? ESPN has now disabled embedding on their videos. Defeats the whole purpose of having it online, yes?

The direct Youtube link is here, but not embeddable. Is it possible to embed YouTube clips if the author has turned off the embeddable code? ESPN has turned off embedding for all of their videos, which is short-sighted.

No but you can use Real Player 11 to download the clip and post it yourself. Also there are plenty of Youtube downloaders out there. I like this one.

I thought I’d post some info on ESPN’s television coverage of UFC 100, which has been drastically more in-depth than their coverage of most UFC PPVs.

The UFC 100 weigh-ins took over ESPNews for about seven minutes on Friday night. It was a little after 7:15 PM Eastern Time and the weigh-ins for Bisping and Henderson had just gotten underway when they started airing on ESPNews. They kept airing the weigh-ins on ESPNews until Joe Rogan’s interview with Frank Mir began, at which point they cut away before going back to talking about such boring sports as baseball. ESPNews anchor Mike Hill then said something to the effect of, “Next time we have a live weigh-in of something, we need to make sure that there are no guys in tight little Speedos.” Co-anchor Linda Cohn said something like, “Hey, that’s your opinion,” as though she disagreed.

Strangely, even though it was the only thing on their network for seven minutes, which is an eternity for a sports news network, there was not one mention of UFC 100 in the overnight broadcast of ESPNews (the 30-minute show that loops all night long until Saturday morning).

There were, however, two mentions of UFC 100 on the overnight SportsCenter over on ESPN itself. In the first mention, the co-anchor said (paraphrasing), “If you’re one of those people who holds your nose at the smell of mixed martial arts, take a whiff of this! Do you smell that? It’s money, and tons of it! Tomorrow night’s pay-per-view event is expected to draw over one million pay-per-view buys. It’s headlined by a heavyweight title fight, but that’s where MMA smells like boxing. You know, WBA, WBO, IBF, and so on. The fighter who is recognized as the best heavyweight fighter in MMA is not going to be in Vegas on Saturday night. His name is Fedor, and he’s got a beef with the UFC, so he won’t fight for them.” (Apparently, not wanting to sign what is a lifetime no-compete clause if you’re the champion is “having a beef” with someone.)

Then they cut to coverage of the Lesnar-Mir weigh-in, with the obligatory mention of “men in their underwear.” Then they said that the first time these two met, Mir “won by kneebar submission, which sounds so painful that it hurts just to say it.” One of the co-anchors also said that he has seen Georges St. Pierre fight before, and he was so good that he had nightmares that night.

There was one more mention of UFC 100 at the end of SportsCenter in the “Watch 2 Watch 4” blurb at the end of the show, which briefly plugged the start time and main event of the PPV. One of the co-anchors said to the other that he knew of a great sports bar that showed MMA PPVs live, and half-jokingly invited the other anchor to join him to watch it, and the other anchor said, “Uh… I’ll pass!” in a self-righteous tone of voice. What an ass.
