Updated K-1 3/28 Yokohama Arena WGP card

By Zach Arnold | March 28, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

Event results here. More show thoughts here. The claimed attendance was 10,328. The main headline in all the major Japanese newspapers covering the event was Maeda winning the K-1 heavyweight belt and becoming a native star.

The reason given for Chalid “Die Faust” Arrab’s absence is influenza.

Next event: World MAX 2009 World Championship Tournament – Final 16 at Fukuoka’s Marine Messe

  1. Rictor says:

Chalid has problems with getting visa (the same was last year when he couldn’t compete in Hawaii). Also, Semmy Schilt will fight Hesdy Gerges who took this fight on short notice (his trainer is Thom Harrinck who is already in Japan with Peter Aerts and most likely he recommended Hesdy).

  2. Zack says:

I hope Manhoef & Spong both meet up and are relatively fresh.

  3. what is up with FEG booking Schilt last second like this? So dumb.

  4. jmechanic says:

Why exactly is booking Schilt “so dumb”?

  5. The Citizen says:

Anyone have air times for the card?

  6. Paul says:

Air times begin at the party hour of 4AM on the east coast (HDNet), and an encore tomorrow night at 9PM.

  7. spacedog says:

Is there a free live stream and if so where can I find it?

  8. Steve says:

    justin.tv

  9. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Ha, Keijiro Maeda vs. Melvin Manhoef was worth holding the entire event.

  10. Alan Conceicao says:

Good show. I’m sure K-1 is thrilled to have a native champion and Bonjasky took care of Overeem, albiet in ugly fashion. Aerts was in fantastic shape.

  11. 45 Huddle says:

I, along with most other fans, had Overeem winning that fight. Ruling the knockdown as a slip in round 2 was a joke.

For all the people who complain about C-Level kickboxing in MMA…. That Overeem/Bonjasky fight looked sloppier then most MMA fights when on the feet.

  12. spacedog says:

Wow, Remy got the “no fucking way we let this interloper win a decision” vote form the judges. Overeem was sloppy but he manhandled him.

  13. Alan Conceicao says:

Overeem didn’t get credited for the “knockdown” in the second because it was ruled a trip/sweep. You can sweep a guy with a low kick, but you don’t get a 10-8 out of it. In fact, Overeem should be happy he wasn’t deducted a point the way he was throwing Bonjasky around in the clinch and throwing blows while holding the leg. Pro tip to newbs: K-1 and San Shou. Worst case scenario, even if you gave Overeem the first (tenuous) and second, its a draw.

  14. Alan Conceicao says:

    Err, K-1 *ain’t* San Shou.

  15. spacedog says:

Ok, Alamn I was actually wondering about this. How does K1 score? Does a trip/throw down count as a knockdown? How is it scored? is it legal at all. what about catching the leg and than kicking out the other? I see that all the time. What about ring control? Is a knock down an automatic 10-8 round?
the way I saw that fight Overeem manhandled Remy, with Remy getting one nice knockdown at the end. I know the ref keep yelling “no grap” but is it legal to grab and just throw the other guy around? Also even with the dirty boxing and trips it seemed like Overeem was landing more shots. Anyhow I guess I’m just wondering how the scoring in k1 works ion general and how that scoring would apply to this fight in particular.
ps I was rooting for Remy, so no bias here.

  16. ttt says:

overeem seemd like he was fighting MMA rather than Kickboxing. all those konckdowns and trips don’t really count.

  17. ttt says:

props to k-1, they keep on putting entertaining shows and the old guys still put up good fights. it is good relief from the Marcus Davis’s and Chris Lyttle’s.

  18. Alan Conceicao says:

You can sweep a guy or punch him once when you catch the leg, but you can’t throw multiple blows. You also can’t use the thai clinch, elbows, and knock downs are, like in boxing, 10-8 rounds automatically. Sweeps do not count as knockdowns. K-1 also scores rounds even whenever they are not clearly for one guy or another, and while its a 10 point system, it is not a 10 point must. Obviously those aspects have been used to justify bad decisions as well as good ones, but they are what they are.

  19. Mike Rome says:

I had it 29-28 for Bojansky. Overeem tossing Remy around was definitely ridiculous. Getting thrown down over and over completely saps your energy, Overeem probably did more damage with that than anything else.

  20. Zack says:

“I, along with most other fans, had Overeem winning that fight. Ruling the knockdown as a slip in round 2 was a joke.”

I don’t know if I’d call you a “fan” since they never score falls like that knockdowns in K-1. The obvious example that comes to mind is Igor vs Hoost.

  21. 45 Huddle says:

I am not the biggest K-1 fan, but I have watched enough to know what is happening. The fix was in. The K-1 President even said that if Remy lost, K-1 is over.

There have been other fights where the same thing happened, and they have counted it as a knockdown…. Of course, that is when it benefits K-1.

It’s the same garbage Pride use to pull. Make the rules as vague as possible, and allow both refs and judges to dictate the outcome as much as possible.

  22. The Citizen says:

K-1 is always fun and more often then not, either lots of good knockouts and great competition. Its always been this way. When I lived in Japan I found a video store and watched all the old VHS K-1 tapes. All of them were entertaining and to see fighters like the Lumberjack still fighting is pretty cool.

  23. smoogy says:

I love how people keep seizing on that comment from Tanigawa. The guy is just a mouthpiece trying to drum up interest in their whole K-1 vs. MMA war. I’m amazed how seriously some people take him.

  24. Zack says:

“There have been other fights where the same thing happened, and they have counted it as a knockdown…. Of course, that is when it benefits K-1.”

    Yeah…great examples.

  25. ilostmydog says:

I looked up those fights that 45 mentioned and they definitely counted the same thing as a knockdown in them.

  26. Dave says:

Remy couldn’t get his balance and into his groove because Overeem kept tripping and tossing him. Regardless, Remy did not look too good, and what fights 45 mentioned? Or is that the joke.

They’ll sometimes count weird stuff for Japanese stars they want to go over..

  27. Chuck says:

Personally, I had it 29-28 Remy. First round 10-10, second round 10-9 Overeem, third round 10-8 Remy. If it wasn’t for the knockdown in the third round Overeem would have definitely won. But Overeem should have been deducted a point or two for those belly-to-belly slams, and when he pushed Remy’s chin against the ropes.

But man that was a sloppy fight. Because of Overeem and his Greco-Roman wrestling tactics.

  28. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

I’m not a K-1 fan, but I do watch the classics and I’ve been watching the events lately on HDNet. Knowing that I don’t understand the scoring, it certainly looked to me like Overeem won the second round and was winning the fight. I’m pretty shocked that just one knockdown was enough to give a 10-8 round to Bonjasky, when Overeem was throwing him around like a ragdoll.

  29. Alan Conceicao says:

Knowing that I don’t understand the scoring,
I’m pretty shocked that just one knockdown was enough to give a 10-8 round to Bonjasky

No offense, but this is kickboxing we’re talking about. If you get dropped, you lose the round 10-8 unless you knock the other guy down or hurt him huge before the bell rings. As for the whole “throwing him around” thing, can we get people to stop mentioning that? Throws don’t score. They dont show control. They’re fouls.

  30. liger05 says:

Just watched the melvin fight. What happened there. That punch from Maeda didnt look that hard at all.

  31. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

You’d never know they were fouls watching, it’s not like the ref took any points.
