Man Klown, I don’t want to start sh#t talking but how do you and so many others rank Lindland so high? His game is stale, he is old and his last real win was years ago. The game has passed him by.I put the “Law at the lower half of the teens w, Belcher,B isping et al far above him. He is a classic example of an over ranked fighter with old school fans wanting to rank him higher than he should be jsut to show their MMA bona fids.
spacedog, it’s a good point about Lindland. I think it is inherent in ranking systems to lag slightly behind present reality, to be backward- rather than forward-looking.
That’s if you believe, as I do, that rankings should be based on what actually happened (thus, necessarily, in the past) rather than speculating about what would happen in hypothetical match-ups. Many people ascribe to the latter system, which I consider more subjective.
The redeeming quality of the system is that it self-corrects over time. Lindland will slip out of the polls eventually, as he is defeated in future fights, and as up-and-coming fighters score wins over the top few fighters above Lindland.

I agree…. If Lawler wasn’t #5 in other rankings, I wouldn’t be shocked. I do find it comical when I see Lawler as high as #2 in some rankings, especially when his biggest win since the start of 2005 is against Frank Trigg.

There is a difference between lagging behind and something that just doesn’t make sense. Lindland doesn’t have any big Middleweight wins for years. When Belfort beat him, Lindland wasn’t even a Top 10 fighter at the time. Neither should be in the Top 10.

I have no problem dropping Lawler… lol.
I will admit, that the Middleweight Division is hard to rank. Henderson, Franklin, & Mousasi are all competing at Light Heavyweight as well. Makes it tough to have a good ranking system.
I think by the end of 2009, the Middleweight picture will be much easier to determine. The UFC will likely have a few fights between ranked fighters. And Strikeforce now has Le, Lawler, Santiago (I think), and a few others. A few of the Top 10 guys will come from that organizaton. Basically, the division is condensing. Hopefully Affliction folds and Belfort can find a home in Strikeforce or the UFC.
