A politician pushes for an MMA ban in Manitoba province

By Zach Arnold | February 10, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

The Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that a local city councilman is pushing for a ban on MMA after an 18-year old fighter suffered a concussion and was taken to a local hospital.

Read the article, but note this gem:

“We don’t allow dogfighting, we don’t allow cockfighting, so why should we allow this?” Nordman said Monday.

“There’s no reason an 18-year-old should be hospitalized.”

The promoter for the event was Canadian Fighting Championship. The building in question, the Winnipeg Convention Centre, has been host to prior MMA events promoted by long-time pro-wrestling and MMA promoter Tony Condello.

Maybe they should outlaw hockey too.
I mean somebody could slip and fall and get really hurt doing that.

I saw the fight, there’s no doubt it should have been stopped between the second and third round. This was a failure of the regulations surrounding the sport not the sport itself.

This politician is ridiculous though, there have been MMA fights in Winnipeg since 2000, where has Grant Nordman been since then? He’s just trying to drum up attention.

I thought this event would have garnered some positive press, it was a really good show. It’s a shame this guy has to go and ruin that, not only that, freakin’ Dean Lewis is on the front on the newspaper APOLOGIZING to us, feel so sorry for the kid, he has the heart of a lion.

  3. Even the kid’s parents state in the Sun article that it shouldn’t be outlawed, but rather the referees should be trained to know when “enough is enough”.

It still baffles me to this day why it’s so odd that younger people aren’t really able to get a foot in the door to government positions. It always seems like I’m reading about some old-timer who’s unbelievably resistant to change or fails to see what actually happened. It was clear in this story that the referee just wasn’t either trained properly to identify the danger or he was just a moron who decided to let things continue.

  4. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Apparently the fights in Winnipeg this past week were particularly bloody and violent, the sport’s been running up there underground and above ground for well over a decade though (I have a friend who was at a bar MMA event in 1995), I’d be shocked if they actually shut it down.

You’ll get more than one concussion a year in any high school from any season of hockey, football, or even basketball.

I doubt we’ll be hearing a cry to outlaw those in Manitoba.

But as a Canadian, trust me: Manitoba is craphole. They need all the entertainment they can get to distract themselves from the fact that they live in Manitoba.

We have like 3 decent cities in this country, and none of them are remotely close to there.

  6. kayla says:

Ultimo Santa, have you ever been anywhere in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg in the summertime? We have thousands of beautiful lakes and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, there’s more to life than living in the city!

Again, I hope the CFC succeeds, great night of fights. I can’t wait to see the replay on Fight Network. If you guys can, check out Lindsey Hawkes fight, that guy is awesome.

  7. Ultimo Santa says:

kayla, I’m sorry if I offended you, or the noble province of Manitoba. I have to admit that I’ve seen very little outside Winnipeg.

But if you think the most beautiful beaches in the world are in Manitoba, you need to hop a plane to Honolulu STAT.

  8. kayla says:

No I said “some of the…”

Grand Beach is arguably the best beach in Canada which would therefore mean it would top the list of best beaches in the world, which has happened before. Not offended, just trying to enlighten people who write off the whole province based on a stop over they had one night at the Winnipeg airport hotel.
