  1. 45 Huddle says:

No true main event, but a solid card from top to bottom (for a FN).

  2. Pontus says:

I read at mmaweekly that Dan Miller is replacing Alessio Sakara. I hope this is true because this new matchup intrigues me more.

  3. Bryan says:

I would much rather see Johnson Firoavanti and Pellegrino-Emerson on the main card than Velasquez or Amir.

  4. ttt says:

when will they give Cain and Shane for that matter a big name opponent?

  5. 45 Huddle says:

Shane Carwin if fighting Gonzaga in in March at UFC 96.

  6. Dan says:

Sadollah is out vs. Catone and Fiorvanti vs. Johnson is on the main card.

    Ed. — Thank you.

  7. IceMuncher says:

Solid free event. There’s a couple of undercard fights I’m interested in, mainly Rosholt vs Dan Miller, but it’s very rare for a UFN to air more than the scheduled fights.

  8. Ivan Trembow says:

Josh Neer is still fighting even though he was recently arrested for drunk driving, and even though it was not his first arrest for drunk driving. Here is Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse asking Dana White about that:

“MDS: Josh Neer will be fighting Mac Danzig even though he was arrested for drunk driving and felony eluding on New Year’s Eve. Did you consider pulling him from the card because of that?

DW: No. He came to us and talked to me about it, and no, I didn’t consider pulling him. As long as his head was together and he was training, listen — we’re all human beings. We all make mistakes. My thing is how do you handle them. How do you deal with it after? You get all this stuff in sports about the role models and this and that, but listen. We’re all f**king human. I make mistakes every day. He made a mistake.

MDS: And you’re confident that he has learned from it and he’s going to handle it well moving forward?

DW: Yes. If he doesn’t he’ll be gone.”

Again, this is not the first time that Neer is being charged with drunk driving. He has already had his chance to “learn from it.”

  9. Croatian Strength says:

    Maybe he’s a reformed character like Leben…

  10. rainrider says:

Looks like Stojnic pushed Emerson vs Pelligrino out of Main Card.

Good luck, Stojnic. I hope you’ll finish your opponent early so we can watch previously recorded Emerson’s fight.

  11. big boi says:

This is the type of card that makes me wish they would just double the length of the broadcast and show all the fights. Emerson vs. Pellegrino, Miller vs. Rosholt, Tibau vs. Clementi and Grice vs. Veach are all fights that I want to see.

Interesting to see Rosholt, the team takedown top prospect, being thrown to the wolves. Dan Miller is a significantly harder fight than Sakara.

  12. Ivan Trembow says:

Prior to Amir Sadollah’s injury, Anthony Johnson’s fight was scheduled as an untelevised prelim fight. While I’m not glad that Sadollah got injured, I am glad that at least Johnson’s fight will be televised.

  13. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Nice of Ivan to ensure that UFC fighters get all one strikes before they’re out.

Production quality seems to be a notch down tonight. Lots of shots of ref’s asses or over shoulders so that you can’t see whether shots are hitting or not.

    Reminds me of K-1 actually.

  14. Zach Arnold says:

    Reminds me of K-1 actually.

Fuji TV or TBS is usually producing their shows. Japanese production values = generally the best in the world. I hear what you’re saying, however, tonight.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

    1. Johnson vs. Fioravanti – Johnson is showing improvement, but I’m still not sold on him as much as he is being hyped up. Luigi should be out of the UFC now.

    2. Neer vs. Danzig – Mac now has the distinction of being one of 2 TUF failures. The other being Kendall Grove. That entire season (6), was actually pretty bad. I thought this was a very entertaining fight.

    3. Cain vs. Stojnic – Cain seems to be the real deal. He is so fast for a Heavyweight. He needs more experience, but it is a guy like him that would give Fedor absolute fits.

    4. Grice vs. Veach – Grice was one punch away from ending it at one point. And that stoppage was bad, especially after he allowed Veach to take so much punishment a few minutes before!!

So far, an entertaining Fight Night. I was hoping they would show Emerson/Pellegrino.

  16. brent says:

excellent night of free fights. cain needs to step it up, possibly against herring. rumble vs mclovin or swick would be tight as well.

  17. Steve4192 says:

Thank god they let Neer fight.

He was the highlight of the show IMO.

  18. IceMuncher says:

Very entertaining night of fights. It’s a little ironic, but I find that the UFNs tend to be more entertaining on average than PPVs, although I can go without the 20 minutes of ads between every fight.

Lauzon’s ground game was impressive. I think Diaz vs Lauzon would be an excellent fight, and it makes sense given where they are at in the division right now. Plus, you have the added bonus of having some TUF season 5 rivalry. Most people thought they’d be the ones battling in the finale and were very excited at the prospect. And by most people, I mean me, but I’m assuming I wasn’t the only one.

  19. Big Bill Bob says:

Good card~ Funny how the PPV was all decisions and this one was all finishes. Can’t hate on entertainment. Mac Danzig looked like a vegan out there running from a breed higher up on the food chain. Joe Rogan seemed like he wanted to inquire about how to acquire some adrenochrome from the DEA’s secret stash but remembered that drugs are illegal at the last second.

Good stuff regardless, too bad you have to pay for this sport I wish it was all free on TV even with lesser known fighters, damn you boxing and wrestling for providing the beaten path.

  20. EJ says:

Are you serious?, between Ultimate Fight Nights, UFC PPV Eurpean shows, Unleashed programs plus WEC events and WEC Wreckage. We are getting a good load of free MMA and that is just from Zuffa, not to mention other orgs like Strikeforce etc.

  21. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

If you have HDNet, you literally have more MMA than you can stomach right now without paying any PPV fees.

I’ve had to cut some things out of my watching diet so that I don’t burn out. Heck, they just announced that they’ll be showing Sengoku as well, and the K-1 Classics show just started last Friday (not MMA, but lots of MMA fighters).

Vs and Spike have about a dozen event replays in the next two weeks, most of which were exceptional.

This has to be a crazy time to be a new fan, to have so much available at your fingertips without having to resort to downloading things from the internet (unless you’re overseas).

  22. Ivan Trembow says:

On a related note, Fedor still has to come to the UFC if he wants to “prove he’s the best.” You know, because it’s not like he has ever done that since he became #1 in 2003, and it’s not like his last two fights were wins over top-five-ranked opposition.

    http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=8148

  23. 45 Huddle says:

It’s funny that out of everything from that article, you pick out that to discuss.

The stuff Dana White is saying is crazy if true. Shows a complete mismanagement of a fighter, which is a much bigger issue.

  24. Ivan Trembow says:

That’s all that I picked out to discuss because that’s the only thing that’s new there— ie, even after beating another top-five-ranked fighter, Fedor still has to come to the UFC if he wants to “be the best.” The claims about Fedor’s management and their demands come down to whether you want to take Dana White’s word for it, and he’s not exactly brimming with credibility on anything related to Fedor (“Fedor sucks!” or “Fedor is a fraud!” or “Fedor is not a top ten fighter!”). The way it was reported at the time was that the two sides had an agreement in principle on the vast majority of the terms (ie, no co-promoting of events or anything like that), but the final sticking point was Fedor’s ability to occasionally compete in Sambo events within his home country. That was a huge deal for Fedor, and neither side would budge on it, and that’s what temporarily killed the deal at that time. That was in 2007. Any chances of the deal being revived were subsequently reduced every time Dana White said something like “Those crazy Russians!” or any of the aforementioned quotes.

So while it requires taking Dana White’s word for it to believe all of the claims about Fedor’s management and their demands, one thing that doesn’t require taking anyone’s word for it is what you sign away when you sign an exclusive UFC contract and their merchandising agreements, not to mention the de-facto no-compete clause for life as long as you’re a UFC champion. If Fedor can still make huge money without signing away his lifetime rights to the UFC, and can continue to do things that are important to him such as representing his country in Sambo, and continue to fight top-five-ranked competition and make huge money, that’s his prerogative. Just because the UFC acts like it’s treason for a fighter to not sign with the UFC does not mean that everyone else has to act like that as well.

  25. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

    Yawn.

  26. Grape Knee High says:

Anyone who believes that the lack of contract movement for Fedor has to do with anything but the intractability of BOTH sides is incredibly naive or has an axe to grind.

With regards to the event, Cain Valesquez….that dude is raw. First, he looks like he will ultimately be fighting at 205. Second, he was clearly 10 times more talented than the kickboxing patsy that the UFC brought in, but he had a hard time finishing and, even more surprisingly, could not take the guy down.

  27. Steve4192 says:

Ivan, so what you are saying is that you are willing to completely write off Dana White’s ramblings as promoter-speak (understandable IMO) EXCEPT when it comes to the subject of his opinion on Fedor.

I agree that the stadium stuff is probably embellished (though I don’t doubt that might have been in Vadim’s opening salvo to the negotiations). But why so serious about Dana’s opinion on Fedor? He is a promoter. He is ALWAYS going to insist that the only way to be legitimate is to fight for him. Neither item is newsworthy, as both items are obvious half-truths that he is spinning to make his company look good.

Did you honestly believe Dana was going to suddenly drop the facade and declare the greatness of Fedor and the weakness of his own HW division? Please. Dana will continue to say whatever he feels serves the best interests of the UFC. If that means belittling the greatest fighter in the history of the sport, then so be it.

Are you going to act mortified again when he makes the same claims after Fedor whoops Barnett? Because I can guarantee you that is exactly what he will do.

  28. Ivan Trembow says:

There’s a difference between “being a promoter” and getting into the realm of saying things like, “Fedor sucks!” or “Fedor is a fraud!” The latter is not made necessary by the former.
