Dan Henderson and Mark Coleman talk about their MMA futures

By Zach Arnold | January 15, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph (UK):

GAD: You’re 38. Does retirement enter your mind?

DH: It’s hard to know when that moment is. There’s a lot of fighters going through that dilemma. Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, it must be going through their heads. There’s things I want to accomplish that are attainable in this sport, and if I attain them, it would probably be a good time to retire. I want to beat Anderson Silva (the sport’s No 1 pound for pounder, who Henderson lost to two years ago) and I also want to fight for the 205 lb belt. And then retire.

Meanwhile, Mark Coleman has no plans to retire any time soon:

“I’m hearing the ‘old’ word quite a bit, but I use that as motivation,” he said. “I’ve taken good care of my body and have been very fortunate with injuries, only two surgeries, so I’ve been blessed. Anyway, age is just a number.”

  1. Dave says:

They are fighters, they won’t retire until either their injuries pile up so high that they can’t fight anymore or Athletic Commissions stop clearing them.

  2. Ultimo Santa says:

The allure of a larger, juicier paycheck will always bring back the battered warrior for one more dance.

Or in Ken Shamrock’s case, a dozen.

Royce Gracie did his legacy a favor by bowing out of the UFC with a modicum of dignity, and not returning for several more embarrassing one-sided beatings.

I think in his fight with Shogun, we’ll see just how old Coleman really is. If Shogun is half the man he was in his prime, it should be a very short very violent TKO win for Rua.

Henderson is looking pretty sharp, but I think people are underestimating Franklin a lot since his losses to Anderson Silva. I call a Franklin decision (I don’t think either man will break).

  3. D.Capitated says:

Headlining boxers can’t seem to retire when they should, and they make boatloads more money than MMA fighers. Seriously, I don’t think Mark Coleman can plan on Hustle providing food on his table forever, and aside from amateur wrestling or MMA, what has he done to pay the bills in the last 25 years?

It may sound cruel, but some of these guys are gonna have to be beaten out of the sport. By that, I mean sustain multiple & successive brutal losses.

  4. Steve4192 says:

Mark Coleman has old man strength.

If used properly, no can defend.

  5. Ultimo Santa says:

Wih his head shaved, Coleman now looks like Frank Trigg’s older, more delusional brother.

  6. Jeremy says:

Check out the photo from Combat Lifestyles. Steve looks to be correct:
    Old man strength indeed!

Interesting tidbit: My anti-spam word was juiced.

  7. rainrider says:

Please….interview “the original wrestling legend in MMA” Dan Severn and ask him the same question.

Severn is older than everybody and the last time I checked, he was like 15-2 since the year 2006.
