WWE attacks UFC in company statement over Brock Lesnar title win

By Zach Arnold | November 16, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

UFC’s stranglehold on the PPV marketplace really must have people inside WWE upset:

Critics have noted that many of the fights on the UFC pay-per-view ended in the first round, leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content. The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious under-card fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a “crap shoot” in regards to filling the full three hours.

Pretty silly statement from the WWE, but also makes sense coming from a company where every moment of every event is planned out and predetermined.
MMA is a real sport where anything can and will happen, like football, boxing, baseball, basketball, etc.
WWE is following a script and events are designed for maximum drama and excitement. It’s physical theater.
I thought UFC 91 was one of the most entertaining and satisfying cards i have seen in a while. Even the undercard fights, guys were fighting their asses off. I can’t remember the last time i saw a card where really no fight was boring.

Zach— Are people going to be allowed to come on here and impersonate MMA executives without their posts being deleted?

  4. Big Bill Bob says:

I understand the fights were entertaining and in the end the sport is about entertainment, just saying I was not impressed by the calibre of competitors on this >Pay Per View< card besides the two co-main events, the rest are better suited to be distributed amongst Fight Night cards where they belong. The only fighters worthy of beign apart of a purchasable event were: Demian Maia, KenFlo, Joe Stevenson and the main event.

I’ve nothing to do with these PRIDE fights cause I could care less, I liked the show but its nothing worth fighting for. But it’s also not worth forgetting how almost all their shows actually felt epic, compared to having to be told “BIGGEST SHOW EVAR” over and over by some bald potty mouth.

PRIDE sold itself, Dana sells UFC.

Back on topic…WWE apparently took down the post.

  6. Luke says:

Man, I get a good nights sleep and its 2004 again. Who won between Lesnar and Goldberg, anyway? I think that was the Wrestle Mania main event.

  7. will says:

damn , wwe took the article down…. i do rememeber though a couple days before the fight wwe.com was advertising the brock randy fight in a big full bleed ad on the websites background…maybe they want to do a co promotion with ufc …

“Who won between Lesnar and Goldberg, anyway?”

I think Goldberg did. Both of them had quit the company and were in their final match, and the crowd knew it, and they booed both of them out of the building. They weren’t even reacting to the moves in the match, they were just booing and chanting things like, “Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye.” It was pretty bad.
