  1. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

If it’s unregulated, is it MMA?

    Is flag football the NFL?

  2. siouxnyc says:

Interestingly enough, last weekend a pro/am MMA show near Buffalo went off without a hitch, an amateur MMA event near Albany happened the weekend before that, and this weekend there are no less than two amateur MMA events scheduled for the New York City/Long Island area.

  3. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Actually there’s an organization that’s been promoting well publicized events here as well (Boston area) for about a year. I was thinking about going to their event last weekend but it was early on a Friday night and the ticket prices were kind of high IMHO (40 bucks minimum, which to me is major league pricing).

  4. Michaelthebox says:

    Is MMA the UFC?

MMA is a sport, anybody can play a sport.

  5. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

You can hit someone with a hockey stick within the accepted confines of a hockey game. Hitting someone with a hockey stick out back of a barn is considered assault.

A bunch of kids beating one another up and posting the results to youtube isn’t MMA.

  6. Brandt says:

It’s the media at its best. Now that MMA hit the mainstream, every high school fist fight will be considered a product of “the UFC”. Last time I checked, kids were fighting before they even knew that MMA existed.

  7. Michaelthebox says:

You can hit someone within the accepted confines of a hockey game. Who determines that its hockey? Generally, the players do, by playing a game resembling hockey and saying they’re playing hockey. And they’re right.

If these kids were fighting in a form that resembles MMA, and they call it MMA, its MMA, unregulated or not. Backyard MMA rather than amateur MMA or professional MMA, but MMA nonetheless.

  8. Michaelthebox says:

Remember Jeremy, MMA is the name of the sport, not a league. If these kids were fighting each other and calling it UFC, they’d be wrong, just as dudes playing football in their backyard would be wrong to call it NFL. But they are playing football, and the kids fighting are fighting MMA.

  9. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Who said they called it MMA?

The article doesn’t even use the term MMA, only Zach did. The article just says that the police confiscated “ultimate fighting” style gloves.

Remember, MMA doesn’t mean anything except that someone is avoiding infringing on a copyright for Ultimate Fighting Championship and they don’t care for the “foreign-ness” of Vale Tudo Fighting.

  10. David says:

As Brandt said above, it is the media who chooses the wording… which is interesting, because if the UFC maintains market share globally then soon articles will say, “illegal UFC mock fight ring broken up” but of course the UFC makes big corporate money and can afford to pay big tax dollars so government and corporations are happy… whereas other orgs will just not cut it 🙁

  11. Michaelthebox says:

“Who said they called it MMA?

The newspaper called it an “Ultimate-Fighting style fight”.

If a newspaper article said “police broke up an NFL-style sporting contest” I would think it reasonable to say the cops busted up some guys playing football.

  12. Mr. Mike says:

The second news video showed an MMA school and, the message was that if you want to learn the skills, go to a school. The instructoir also mentioned that they didn’t even have to fight in a cage, or competition, but could just learn the skills in a controlled environment.

If all you saw was the media and, police are against MMA, you may have cause for alarm, but the media in this case did a good job at presenting what MMA was. The police chief didn’t seem to understand it that much, but the reporters did their homework.
