Michigan MMA legislation

By Zach Arnold | August 24, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

I received a message from a reader asking for more information about House Bill 4869, which is the name of the bill that the Michigan State House passed to legalize MMA in 2007. The reader wanted to know about the first amateur MMA fight held in Michigan and what types of procedures were followed (or if some of the rules followed were modified). If anyone has information on this front, please post a comment. Thanks.

I think the NAAFS can help you out. They had their first sanctioned card in Pontiac a couple months back. They’ve been trying to corner the amateur scene once the bill got passed.

If you come in contact with Greg Klikas, tell him I said hi.

Other then that, it’s still the wild west here. while Ehrens is running 3×3 rounds, Helmki is still going 3×5. No schools are talked to, you sign up by phone. The officials from Ehrens are from ABC Boxing, Dore’s gym. I’ve heard you’d have to pay an entrance fee to keep the facade up. I’ve also heard that they’re not for upholding weight classes. Some guys show 5-10 pounds overweight to fight just one fight.
