Monday news & notes (6/23/08)

By Zach Arnold | June 23, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

I have two new articles at MMA Memories (here and here), if you are interested in checking them out. The first article is my take on Lorenzo Fertitta’s increased role in UFC management and the second article is a laundry list of lessons that we all should learn from some of MMA’s big-money losers.

The fight that UFC wants you to watch on the Internet for free.

Josh Gross has some nice words about Evan Tanner. Plus, words of a cautionary trend and tale to come to the MMA business (if it isn’t already here in existence).

Hall of Fame Magazine has an interesting article on the history of The Ultimate Fighter.

Gareth Davies of The Telegraph has some thoughts about Anderson Silva fighting at 205 pounds.

Boxer and UFC ally Wayne McCullough announced his retirement from fighting.

The Oregonian has an opinion column about MMA called Comedy or tragedy? What would be a large, mainstream media article on MMA be without a reference to ‘human cockfighting’?

Fighters Only Magazine has an interview with Brad Pickett on a number of MMA-related topics.

Poor Luke Thomas.

This has not been a good weekend for Ken Hayashi, boss of Ontario’s athletic commission in Canada. Keep your eyes on the TKO Xtreme site for any new developments on this story.

Mike Sawyer has a new radio show at Angry Marks and you can listen to the first show here. We have added the Angry Marks podcast RSS feed to the right side of our site.

Here are my thoughts on the whole ‘UFC vs. Affliction’ war that’s taking place on July 19th.

Oh man oh man oh man oh man…MMA in Ontario…there’s a dream some of us have waited too long for…we’ll see what happens…

Great articles Zach. Of course most of us here already knew that stuff about promoting MMA events, which makes me wonder how guys with millions of dollars can get in this business without knowing that? How do these wannabe promoters accumulate so much money in life and by being so stupid?

  4. Jeff says:

Enjoyed your articles at MMA Memories Zach. As usual, good work.

To be fair, one can be a genius in one field while a failure in others (most notably Vincent K. McMahon) since what made you such a standout in that field may not apply in your other endeavors, etc. I’ve seen many a company collapse by trying to extend out too far too quick.

Trying to post a comment about a story that happened down in LA with UCLA medicine.

I don’t know if you guys have covered this one already but UCLA medicine gave a number of Yakuza members liver transplants after they received a large cash donation.

Turns out one of those Yakuza members was a Mr. Tadamasa Goto who at the time was the head of the Gumi-Goto. I’m sure everyone remembers the Gumi-Goto and their relationship to MMA.

Am I the only one who thinks using a cage over a ring is also an important factor for an upstart MMA org to to put in place if they want to last a long time?
