Quote of the Day – Arco Arena MMA fans

By Zach Arnold | June 2, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

Yesterday, I remarked on how the fans at the WEC event in Sacramento came across better than the fans that went to past UFC events in the same building (Arco Arena). After the WEC event, I received this comment from someone in the California MMA scene:

I’m glad it came off that way on TV, ’cause it sure as hell seemed a hell of a lot worse to me tonight than when I was in the crowd for UFC 65. Holy $&%* were those assholes quick to boo not only at the slightest pause in action, but they also seemed to forget that cheering for one fighter does not mean that you should boo his opponent. It’s going be a long time before I go see fights at Arco again.

  1. David says:

Great point about cheering and booing (both fighters).

I was at a California MMA promotion and some friends of one of the fighters were tipsy and were upset to see their friend in unfortunate positions but I was only cheering good technique. It was an interesting confrontation (no fights, but it was definitely awkward).

and an important comment from the previous post:

“To quote another commenter, “All media personalities have an army of writers. One of his writers is obviously a hardcore MMA fan. =)”

He is just saying what his writers want him to write. In order to bring corporate sponsorship to MMA these promoters NEED TO promote hardcore that is why Dana and Gary seem like such mobsters, they hustle hard to get the sport to the mainstream and then critics complain about small things. Gary Shaw said in the post-fight that he will NOT have Kimbo on every CBS show (hopefully he keeps his word, even though I love the character of Kimbo, exposed and all.)!.”

  2. Iain says:

I’m not sure how you can say the WEC crowd were better than your average UFC one. they turned out in numbers were quick to boo anything.

The McCullough fight wasn’t very good but neither was it as awful as you thought from their reactions. Also you know it’s time to put the mute button on when they started booing during Torres-Maeda.
