WEC 2/13 Albuquerque

Steve Sievert was right – that is a packed house in Albuquerque.

This is a fantastic show. Chase Beebe got schooled by Miguel Torres and Jamie Varner frustrated Rob McCullough in a fight that featured some heavy punching in round three. I can accept the stoppage in the Hiroyuki Takaya fight, although I’m not a fan of it 100% of the way.

Someone should have had the dump button ready to go on Jamie in that interview…

Carlos Condit finished off Carlo Prater in relatively quick fashion. Condit had terrific hometown backing, as he received a superstar reaction from the fans.

There seems to be very little coverage of this event. That’s disappointing, because watching Miguel Torres treat Chase Beebe like he was an amateur was a beautiful thing.

  2. Kris says:

Interesting that they’re promoting Keith Jardine as being on the UFC 82 considering, well, that he’s not on the card. Solid event so far (the TV portion) except the score card mix up to kick things off.

  3. Andrej says:

Keith Jardine could be and that could bring it to 11 fights. Just think they could bump Jon Fitch vs Chris Wilson on the undercard.

  4. 45 Huddle says:

The Garcia fight stoppage wasn’t the worst ever, but it was great either. Then again, Takaya basically did nothing in the way of defending himself.

Overall, that was a really entertaining card. Even the Varner/McCullough fight, which had a horrible 2nd round, had a great payoff in the end.

  5. Total MMA says:

There is a liveblog at total-mma.com

This was a really good show, like the American Shooto.

I think they caught their mistake. I just saw the UFC 82 commercial on Spike, and they replaced the Keith Jardine clip with Heath Herring.

  7. IceMuncher says:

That was the first fight I’ve seen of Miguel Torres, and quite honestly that guy is amazing. Very solid stand-up and amazing BJJ. His rank on the MMA websites is easily going to slide into the top 3 after this performance.

  8. mose says:

mmaranks.com already had torres ranked #3 in January of last year and #1 going in to the fight tonight.

  9. Michaelthebox says:

Fightmatrix had Torres at #2 in the world, behind Yamamoto.

“mmaranks.com already had torres ranked #3 in January of last year and #1 going in to the fight tonight.”

Yeah, but that’s kind of irrelevant when they’ve got Karo as the #1 WW, and the LW rankings are a disaster.

“Fightmatrix had Torres at #2 in the world, behind Yamamoto.”

Looking at the website, Fightmatrix looks to have the best rankings I’ve seen.

  11. Captain says:

I think there is no issue with the Takaya stoppage. Getting dropped and then letting some dude jack you in the face with sloppy punches is not defending yourself. It was only going to get uglier (the punches and the carnage that is).

  12. Zack says:

Solid show. I watched the first run at home then it was playing again at the bar later at night. Interesting to notice there was absolutely no interest in the fights from anyone at the bar.

I thought the Takaya stoppage was early, but not a big deal. I’m a huge Leonard fan and it was good to see him get a win at his natural weight.
