WAR Silva!!!!
WAR LIDDELL
Those aren’t exactly results, guys. What’s with this “WAR” crap anyway?
One of the things that keeps me coming back to this site over, say, Sherdog, is the more rational, mature viewpoi….. oh, the hell with it!
WAR WANDERLEI!!!!!!! KILL HIM!!!
Right on. Don’t forget to include how many times GSP kicks Hughes in the groin.
maga are you hating on gsp? do you really think that hughes stands a chance?
No way. GSP is one of my favorite fighters, and I really can’t stand Hughes self righteous personality. I’m commenting on how the last time they fought GSP kicked Hughes in the nads twice, back to back.
Didn’t Hughes fess up and say that he faked the second groin shot?
If anyone has a legit excuse for losing due to back-to-back groin strikes, it’s Mirko CroCop.
Why do people say “WAR”? I have always seen it all over sherdog message boards but never tried to figure it out.
MMA Junkie is reporting that Sylvia/Nogueira will be announced at the event today. It will be the main event for Superbowl Sunday. To me, if Sylvia wins, he is the #3 Heavyweight in the world (behind Fedor & Couture). If Nogueira wins, I could see him being ranked #2, only behind Fedor. Also, Barnett is coming on his one year since his last MMA fight, so he will be out of any credible rankings.
“WAR” is from Jim Rome’s show.
Apparently he was at a university (which one i forget) and they used the phrase “WAR (school X)” the entire time he was there. It caught on with him and he liked it and began using it on his radio show all the time – now i guess it’s a staple for people making their ‘war-cry'(for lack of better word) to cheer for their team/fighter etc.
I think it means We All Respect.
MMA fighters love to say “its gonna be a war.”
Although I agree that “war” likely originated with Jim Rome and linked through MMA cliche “it’s gonna be a war.”
We All Respect sounds like a backronym to me.
Man, if you’re stealing lines from Jim Rome, then you’re really desperate.
I thought I’d treat everyone to a good laugh by sharing my 2007 major fight prediction record right before the UFC 79 main card begins. Here are my past big fight picks this year:
Sylvia over Couture
Marquardt over A. Silva
Cro Cop over Gonzaga
GSP over Serra
Gonzaga over Couture
Liddell over Jackson
Liddell over Jardine
Shogun over Griffin
You may notice these picks are the exact opposite of the actual results. I did manage to pick Diaz over Gomi, although, of course, the Diaz victory was vacated due to his drug use. The only fight I unequivocally got right was GSP over Koscheck. Perhaps I should start a betting site where I recommend people lay money against whoever I pick?
Tonight, I’m picking Liddell, GSP, and Sokoudjou. You guys still have time to put money on their opponents!
Enjoy the fights,
FF
Rich Clementi nearly won with the MASTERLOCK!!!!!111111111111111
FF’s “big fight” picks, running tally:
Machida wins! 0-1.
FF
The way Machida looks lately, I think he might be a future champion. Such a weird style, but it works.
1. When Heavyweight MMA is bad…. It is really bad. The Sanchez fight was horrible to watch. A few Mir fights have been absolutely horrible. Heck, even Couture’s last 2 Heavyweight fights were boring if the same fight happened between two other people.
2. I have a bad taste in my mouth with the fighters today. Clementi gloating after he won. Guillard being a punk. Sanchez tounting his opponent while he was hurt. What a bunch of losers.
A battle so great that the Earth cracked open and all of the demons of Hell spewed forth to herald its outcome! Truly a moment for the ages that will be remembered in poems and songs until the gears of the universe grind to a halt.
Just kidding, that was terrible.
Soa vs. Eddie II: The Return of The Deadly Fence
Another interim title? This is getting out of hand!! There must be a legal reason they are doing this.
As for the UFC, perfect timing for them. The Patriots game just got over with. Many bars will be switching over the channel just in time for the Liddell/Silva fight….
Which weight division has an interim title? Heavyweight?
After Feb 2nd, there will be an interim Heavyweight, Welterweight, & Lightweight Title.
And while that is annoying… As long as all this is cleared up by the half way mark of 2008, it really is just a small bump in the road to finding out who is the best in each division.
I wasn’t even excited for the Silva/Liddell fight, but that second round just had me screaming like a girl at the TV.
GSP is a beast.
I’m guessing St. Pierre will face Jon Fitch in an Interim WW title bout while waiting to face Serra in a rematch later in 2008…?
FF’s UFC 79 picks go 2-1 — leaving me at 3-9 for the year! I’ve been watching UFC since 1994, by the way. Good thing I’ve got the law degree. Other thoughts:
1. Even though Wanderlei lost, how can anyone not like the guy?
2. GSP’s strength and balance are absolutely insane. He’s like a replicant.
FF
I think the UFC would like to see GSP vs. Serra in April in Montreal. If that can’t happen, then it will likely be GSP vs. Parisyan 2 in April. And honestly, unless another fluke like GSP/Serra happens again, Parisyan doesn’t have a shot. Judo is the poor man’s wrestling to begin with… And there is nothing Karo can do that GSP can’t do better.
I think it will be Fitch/Gono on the undercard of Silva/Henderson, which means Fitch isn’t looking at a title fight until the end of 2008 or early 2009.
Responding to a post up a little bit – I don’t there is going to be an interim Lightweight. Sherk was stripped of the belt so wouldn’t that make it the Lightweight Belt proper?
GSP – Parisyan could be entertaining. Speaking of Judo, that final takedown by GSP probably had Karo taking notes.
Re: Posting #18
45 Huddle, for once, we agree.
Now I know why Fedor didn’t sign with the UFC. All the top fighters he’d fought in Pride are all an illusion. Soukoujou, Silva, Cro Cop, and Shogun has shown us that.
I am very disappointed Wanderlei lost, but as I’ve said several times earlier here, I expected him to lose. No reach, too small for 205. I am surprised two judges scored it 30-27. I thought Wandy clearly won the 2nd round.
Anyone else notice that Gomi was in attendance?
cyphron:
I’m about as big a PRIDE nuthugger as you might find, but I’ve gotten in trouble here before saying that I thought Fedor was a bit overrrated.
Soukoudjou is a different story. He was just PRIDE’s version of Houston Alexander. His ground game is clearly lacking.
Fitch can wait for a title shot and fight other top contenders to continue to prove his value and attempt to force the point that he’s deserving. Its not a bad thing to only have a single champ in the division with everyone having to take their time ti vie for the crown. As soon as Serra can fight again, GSP will fight him and that will be taken care of. And if he can’t anytime in the next year, Fitch will probably get the call 2nd or 3rd in line should he stay unbeaten in this current stretch.
Awesome seeing Gomi in the crowd after Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlai match. Hope that leed’s to Takanomi Gomi coming to the UFC. Know they would also need to try and get Tatsuya Kawajiri and Akira Kikuchi from japan to come to the UFC. That would be awesome.
I’m know a Rich Clementi fan for life after he made Melvin look pathetic. Lyoto Machida vs Keith Jardine would be sweet.
Why get Kikuchi? He’s afraid of planes. Just get Yoshiyuki Yoshida, the dude who unleashed an elbow holocaust on Kikuchi earlier this year.
That really is an unfortunate choice of wording. Valor may be the better part of discretion here. 🙂
An excellent event that really delivered the goods.
White can be happy, they ended the year in style.
GSP is a monster, and a gentlemen… I look forward to seeing him tear apart the Terror (much as I love that coffee-swigging little dude.)
Great event last night to end off the year that had kinda limped to the finish line.
As much as I hated seeing Silva lose, that was an excellent fight. His chin really surprised me…and boy did Liddell look rejuvenated.
I think UFC really won with the way this fight unfolded. You had a war bw two guys that need to respark their careers and neither of them looked bad. Now “Liddell is back” and they can make some serious bank in 2008 off a run to the title. And in the loss Silva appears to have been legitimized to most casual fans in the US.
At least that’s my take on the whole situation.
Also, two questions I had for anyone here who could help clear things up:
1. How did 2 judges give Liddell the 2nd round? IMO Silva took that round on or a bit above the level that Liddell took round 1. Not to mention that he actually dropped Liddell (the 2nd time he hit the canvas).
2. Was Silva actually rocked in the 1st round when he went to the cage or was he just “baiting” Liddell? At first I thought Liddell had rocked him but on the next few viewings, he seemed to have just been playing possum, b/c the second Liddell came in Silva’s range to finish him off Silva fired off a pretty wild shot that sent Liddell back.
Gaijin,
1. Silva won the second round from where I sat. Although Liddell recovered immediately, Wand knocked him down legit, I thought. The other one was a slip, but one was a KD.
2. I think Silva was playing possum. In general, I felt like Silva spent a lot of time trying to bait Liddell in to negate Chuck’s range — and he did tag him several times, but Chuck’s chin is pretty good.
3. I really hope they feed Wand someone he can just kick the crap out of. Crocop, Henderson, Liddell — the guy deserves a gimme fight, no?
FF
I was cheering for Silva, but I can see how the judges gace the second round for Liddell. Liddell got knocked down once (the other was a slip). Yet he really rocked Silva at the end of the round, which narrowly gave him the points.
Cool I could see it from either vantage point for sure, I only wanted to get other’s views as I am an admitted Wandy fan and therefore biased.
The *only* complaint I have with the fight is that for the last 2:30 Chuck was fairly clearly fighting for the “W”, which he has every right to do mind you. But he was checking the clock every 15 seconds and really pulling a De La Hoya. On the other hand Silva just didn’t bring it enough to close the fight out either…I was really surprised he never attempted the MT knees when he had the chance (he had a few chances) and that he didn’t pounce on Chuck when he went down (either time) b/c his bread & butter has always been those wild scrambles.
Also, Rogan and Goldy really give me gas – they don’t even try to hide their bias to certain fighters – they might has well have just been openly rooting for Liddell. Not that it makes any difference on the fight itself, but it’s just tacky.
And GSP – that guy’s just on another level. I think he tops the p4p rankings in my books, even though I wasn’t surprised with the result, he just seems to bring a different wrinkle to his game every time out.
Silva is finished man and so is Liddell. Silva doesnt look the same since he was brutally Knocked out by Cro Cop.
Gotta say though just like we have seen before in his fights when in Pride that he has an amazing way of recovering from being hurt. have no idea how he does it.
I really wanna see Hughes v Penn again. I hate hughes and just wanna see him get skooled again!!
