‘I want NFL Network’ TV ad mocks ‘cage fighting’

By Zach Arnold | December 29, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

In a thinly-veiled attack on UFC (and WEC), Saturday night’s NFL Network broadcast (simulcasted on NBC and CBS) of the New York Giants vs. New England Patriots featured a TV ad spot for “I want NFL Network.”

The ad features actors mocking cable companies that claim people don’t want to pay for the NFL Network, with the spot featuring Earl from “Joe Schmo 2” Spike TV fame saying that he is subjected to four different women cable channels.

However, ‘cage fighting’ was attacked the most during the ad, with the last actor in the ad asking why cable companies think ‘cage fighting’ is more popular than the NFL.

Patriots over Giants, 38-35.

  1. Michaelthebox says:

    Maybe they’re feeling threatened?

  2. 45 Huddle says:

The fact that the UFC is even on the radar is weird….

  3. The press is still positive gaining mainstream attention for the sport

  4. David says:

Thank you cable companies. All these corporations are connected. I never realized just how much of a corporation the UFC is… Even a phrase so discreet as “he’ll be back” was coined by Dana White/Joe Rogan. Some may think this statement is overanalytical, however, the connotation of the sentence is meant to imply that although the person lost, the UFC will allow the fighter back. Either way, I love their product but found all of the plugs and advertisements really annoying.

  5. Matthew says:

I couldn’t believe they said that. Also, someone told me that Chris Collinsworth referred to Melvin as a “nigger” during the broadcast.

Michaelthebox – you must be completely retarded if you suggest that the NFL is feeling threatened by the UFC, what a joke, while UFC/cage fighting is exciting it has essentially replaced boxing, which was never one of the big 3 or 4 sports.

Stay in school, kid, get yourself an education.

it has essentially replaced boxing, which was never one of the big 3 or 4 sports.

It was #2 behind Baseball in the early 1900s, actually (until the late 30s or early 40s when Football and Basketball began to gain traction).

  8. Spawn says:

According to Dana White… MMA(UFC) is now the 2nd most popular sport in America. the NFL obviously knows this….when they have games and fights on the same day, they are inevitably competing for viewers…number of viewers determines advertising dollars..

  9. D.Capitated says:

According to Dana White… MMA(UFC) is now the 2nd most popular sport in America.

I am astonished that you believe this. Its the second biggest combat sport in the country.
