Houston columnist talks about Sam Vasquez’s death
By Zach Arnold | December 8, 2007

Jerome “King” Solomon, a former writer for The Boston Globe and current sports columnist at The Houston Chronicle, wrote an article on Saturday pleading ‘for safety in mixed martial arts.’
Here is how Solomon describes MMA supporters who tout the safety of the sport:
Like soccer zealots, politicians and $64,000 Question contestants, they have ready-made answers for every question. Talk to them and you’ll hear about death and injury rates in sporting activities from darts to cheerleading. Yes, cheerleading. Yes, darts.

And like most sportswriters, Solomon ignores the hard numbers (watch them turn their noses at sabrmetrics while the Red Sox wins another championship using them) and relies on their gut feelings for the truth. We have enough truthiness in public policy, thank you.
