Super Saturday

By Zach Arnold | June 23, 2007

TUF 5 Finale results: Observer | MMA Weekly | Sherdog | UFC Junkie | UFC Mania | MMA on Tap | Fight Report | The Fanhouse | The Sweet Science | Gambling 911 | The Canadian Press | Yahoo Sports | The Houston Chronicle | The Honolulu Star-Bulletin | Yahoo Sports II | UFC HP

For the second week in a row, a Southern California newspaper screws up. BJ Penn wins ultimate title.

K-1 in Amsterdam: K-1 HP (Bob Sapp loses quickly to Peter Aerts)

Ricky Hatton vs. Jose Luis Castillo: Fight Report | BoxingScene.com | CompuBox | Philadelphia Daily News | Associated Press | The LA Times | Broadcasting & Cable (which ripped HBO tonight) | ESPN | Maxboxing | Reuters | New York Daily News | The Sunday Times | The Sunday Mirror

Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer: Press of AC | 411 Mania | Bloody Elbow | Phanatic Magazine | Gambling 911 | Any Given Saturday (radio archive) | Fight Report

Kimbo chokes out Mercer in under 90 seconds in front of an estimated 7,000 fans according to the Press of Atlantic City. “The Colonel” Bob Sheridan was the play-by-play man on the show!

After watching Friday’s show from the San Jose Arena (HP Pavilion) with Baroni vs. Shamrock, tonight’s TUF 5 Finale sure came off flat in terms of production values and overall presentation. This is going to be a real point of weakness for UFC if they do not sit down and change it.

Wow. A DDT and a bullshit chant.

  2. A Yoshista DDT or a real DDT?

  3. Pierre-Luc Allie says:

The Xyience logo is not anywere in the cage…

  4. xx2000xx says:

Now that is how you plug a website 🙂

  5. MMA says:

Wow I just lost some money.

  6. Jonathan says:

The broken rib/self-ko ddt is perhaps the weirdest thing that I have ever seen in MMA.

  7. SB says:

bj penn blew up his own website lol

  8. Jason Gatties says:

Clearly he under estimated the amount of web traffic he would get. As for the fight, the best BJ has looked in years. Stay at 155 though.

  9. Lynchman says:

So I guess BJ’s blatant self promotion paid off.

  10. SB says:

Show was fine but post-fight man-hugging has got to stop. Save that stuff for in the back or at the hotel later please hehe.

  11. Jason Gatties says:

Haha..yet another UFC diss here. Tonights “production value” on a FREE EVENT was just fine.

  12. Zach Arnold says:

The San Jose show will be available to watch on Showtime next week ‘for free.’

  13. SB says:

Zach can you write an article about how man-hugging is ruining the business? In my opinion its just wrong and could cause ratings to drop…

  14. Adam Morgan says:

Kimbo by guillotine in full guard. Hell has officially frozen over.

  15. Adam Morgan says:

Also, I just got done watching the post fight interview for Kimbo. He’ll fight Tank Abbott on Sept. 14th in CFFC.

  16. Erin says:

I think the Man-Hugging is awesome, though I am a rather touchy-feely person myself.

  17. xx2000xx says:

Erin I think you’ll change your opinion of Man Hugging if your boy toy Tank Abbott hugs Kimbo Slice after they fight 🙂

  18. liger05 says:

Penn shouldn’t stay at 155. Penn needs the huge fights and thats v Hughes and GSP.

Hatton was awesome v Castillo. Only went 4 rounds but full of action. Fatastic body shot by Hatton. His bod shots are lethal. Get him in v Cotto next at MSG.

  19. chis says:

good crowds for Martial Arts alike with the Sham/Baronai fight,Kimbo got 7000 and 25000 in Holland.Phew.

  20. Ultimo Santa says:

    UFC tickets – $500

    UFC fighter salary – $3000

Dana White’s profit margin from a UFC PPV event – $40 million

    Dana White’s wardrobe cost – $27

Nate Diaz and BJ Penn BOTH throwing Dana White under the bus in post-fight interviews – Priceless.
