The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 Episode 9

By Erin | May 31, 2007

By Erin Bucknell

Brandon says that he’s run down from his first fight and trying to cut weight. He’s also apparently not a fan of Jens’ coaching style. They get into a bit of a kerfuffel over whether or not Brandon is giving enough. This leads to Brandon having a bit of a cry.

Good grief, this is the cryingest season of TUF EVER. Are they putting something in the water? Or given the last show, putting something in the booze?

Gray and BJ have a rather intense sparring session, which Gray absolutely loves.

Back at Team Jens, Brandon throws out the idea of training with both teams. This, while understandable, kinda invalidates the whole “team” concept.

Jens and Brandon talk things out and have a bonding session.

BJ brings in Randy Couture as a guest trainer. Screw training, I’d just want to hand out with him.

We get a quick recap of the BJ/Jens dislike. BJ thinks Jens has disrespected him since their fight and Jens denies. I just want to know if BJ will ever be able to get into that kind of shape again.

Cole decides to get back at Nate for the pranks that Nate has been playing lately. I’m kinda scared by the idea that this involves silly string, piñatas and whipped cream. It sounds like the start of a scary ass porno. This turns into a night of “payback” by both guys which Cole thinks ends with beds in the pool. Nate, however, continues by attacking with water and baby powder at 3 in the morning.

And welcome back to another episode of “The Hells of Cutting Weight”. This episode stars Brandon Melendez looking completely out of it. Can we please start a trend of people actually fighting close to their natural weight? I’d be so ready to kill someone after all that. And not in the good “aggression for the fight” kind of way. Thankfully Brandon makes weight.

Round 1: Gray immediately goes in for a takedown, which eventually ends up with him monkey climbing Brandon’s back. They hit the ground with Gray getting Brandon’s back and working for a rear naked choke. Brandon manages to flip around and goes into Gray’s full guard. Gray gets up for a second and automatically goes back in again. Brandon tries for a guillotine while Gray gets an arm for a kimura. They go back to standing and start exchanging punches. Gray attempts a takedown but Brandon catches him on the way down in a choke again. Gray slips out and works to Brandon’s back again. Brandon almost gets the fight standing again before Gray stops him against the cage and then gets his back. And I’m tired just trying to keep up with all of that.

Round 2: The guys stick to mostly stand up with a few aborted takedown attempts for the first few minutes. Gray gets a takedown and grabs Brandon’s head for leverage. They almost get back to standing but this time Brandon ends up on top. This doesn’t last for long as Gray switches them and gets full mount. Brandon has a gash above his left eye, which, thankfully, isn’t bleeding to badly yet. After maneuvering against the cage, they go back to the center of the ring and promptly hit the mat again. Both guys do a good job of tying the other one up without managing to do much themselves. Gray moves around and grabs a guillotine to which Brandon taps out.

I’d say that was a damn decent fight simply because of how fast paced it was.

Holy shit, someone said “guillotine” correctly! Go Jens!

Is their something wrong with cutting weight to be a big fish in a small pond? I dont get it.

Yea, this may be that rare case where reality tv is actually reflecting reality.

  3. Nick says:

No I think the reason they are all crying so much is that they may have found a new way of cutting water weight that we all have had no idea about!!! But on a serious note crying in front of your mama (Jens) is not the answer…you gotta cry in front of ole’ papa bear (Dana) to get what you want. Proper position for Dana is on your knees…i bet the term lay and pray has a new meaning to all MMA fighters that want something from ole’ papa bear. ; P

A nice recap again Erin. Not as funny as some of your prior recaps, but still entertaining.
