Monday media: Rampage Jackson’s big week

Kazushi Sakuraba vs Quinton Jackson
Uploaded by Panabas

This is certainly one of the more memorable matches in PRIDE’s history, featuring established Japanese ‘ace’ Kazushi Sakuraba against (at that time) relative newcomer Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. I’ll never forget the storyline that DSE established to introduce Jackson to the Japanese public. In newspaper and TV outlets, DSE pushed a storyline in which Jackson was a homeless fighter from Memphis who lived in a bus and talked to pigeons while wearing a chain like a junkyard dog around his neck. What made the angle intriguing was that the Japanese fans completely bought into the storyline.

Gryphon takes note of a Kami no Puroresu report that a new company for PRIDE has not been started yet. Kakutolog notes a report in Tokyo Sports where sources have told the paper that while the DSE/UFC PRIDE asset sale transfer negotiations are still ongoing, the hope is that the ‘shinsei’ (newborn) PRIDE promotion will run its first event in the Kanto (Tokyo) area in August.

The Quad Cities Online has a report claiming that Tim Sylvia is going to be in a dancing competition soon (June 29th in Davenport, Iowa).

We have a Steve Blackman and Greg Sirb sighting. Someone alert Charles Jay. It’s a link to a CBS 21 (Harrisburg, PA) story called Special report: License to Hurt, talking about the State of Pennsylvania writing legislation now to regulate MMA in their state.

Onto today’s headlines.

Great great fight. Quniton slamming Saku was wonderful and the way Saku recovered and caught Quinton for the submission was a thing of beauty. Just another example of why Saku will always be me favourite fighter!!!

  2. PizzaChef says:

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Teh American production values! Can’t handle….teh gheyness!!!!!!!!! Oddly enough I have that on DVD when I first wanted to look into PRIDE. Maybe I should throw them out now, lol.

So, word is that Sakuraba was supposed to be in Cali today for his physical. Any sightings?

  5. Rollo the Cat says:

Sorry, Loretta Hunt posted on the UG just a short time ago, that Sak’s physical was pushed back to the 23rd.

  6. ChinBo says:

What most people dont konw is that they (PRIDE) told Quinton when he got there that he would have to cut to 195. This is one of the big reasons he gassed so badly in this fight.

Also while Pride played up some of the ghetto-aspects of his character he was living in a bus with his son at the time of this fight
