Friday update: Heat-up for Lindland vs. Fedor

By Zach Arnold | April 12, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

Pawel Nastula is training with Mirko Cro Cop.

Satoru Kitaoka submitted Fabricio “Pitbull” Monteiro at today’s DEEP Korakuen Hall event to earn a spot in the PRIDE Lightweight GP tournament (starting on 5/20 at Saitama Super Arena). Also at the DEEP event, Murilo Bustamante defeated Ryuta Sakurai by KO in 3’50 of R1. On the undercard, Joe Doerksen defeated Kim Dae Won in R1 at the 3’35 mark with a triangle choke.

Ohio event promoter Corey Fischer is promoting Cliff “Twin Tyson” Couser for an upcoming MMA event. Couser fought in the past for K-1. If you recognize the name Corey Fischer, it’s because he used to be associated with Toughman boss Art Dore. Fischer also was named by an Ohio Athletic Commission watchdog group a few years ago for using professional fighters in amateur Toughman events (including MMA fighter Forrest Petz).

Onto today’s headlines.

  1. The Citizen says:

    Go Lindland!

  2. Zack says:

Also…the Zuffa myth continued on the Tito vs Dana special.

Tito Ortiz became the first light heavyweight champ by beating Wanderlei Silva at UFC 25?

No, he won the middleweight title that was vacated by Frank Shamrock after Frank he went into semi retirement.

The title was renamed LHW after the Zuffa purchase.

  3. 45 Huddle says:

A little too late for boxing to change its format. It has already lost most of its fans….

  4. Liger05 says:

Boxing still has plenty of its fans. Its PPV numbers last year was still very good just not as good as the UFC’s. The sport has declined but for me thats mainly down to a weak HW division. It doesnt matter how good the other divisions are, boxing needs a stong HW division!! However the sport isnt in crisis as some seem to think and the numbers for Oscar v Mayweather will be off the charts!!

  5. Ultimo Santa says:

Any of Matt Lindland’s fans should show their crazy love and support for him by attending his funeral next week.

You can word it anyway you want, Tito Ortiz was the first light heavyweight champion, and how he became champ was by beating Wanderlei.

  7. JThue says:

Got this surprising message on proelite.com today. TV deal for CRC my ass?

“Subject: FREE Live Stream – Cage Rage & NoLimits!
Message: Saturday, 4/21 we are streaming two top MMA Events – FREE!

    1. Cage Rage at 3 pm EST / 12 pm PST live from London featuring – Bob “The Beast” Sapp vs. Gary Turner, Ninja, Paul Daley, Michael McDonald

    2. NoLimits at 10 pm EST/ 7 pm PST live from California featuring Takumi Nakayama, Brazil’s Fábio Negão and Tim “Big Perm” Persey”

    – Anyway, this is probably better for Cage Rage than some low-life TV chan; and I certainly look forward to watching it in the great VQ PE.com brings. So thumbs up!

  8. Mr. Roadblock says:

Merchant has lost it I feel as a commentator. He’s getting older and what he says takes too long to go from his brain out of his throat. It doesn’t feel organic. I think Kellerman is the right move in the commentating booth. But nobody does a better post fight interview than Larry Merchant. Hopefully HBO keeps him around for that.

  9. Rollo the Cat says:

Speaking of the IFL, not that anyone was, what were the Batlleground ratings for the last episode with Lindland and the Wolfpack? Anyone know?

  10. Body_Shots says:

    0.7 rating.

  11. JThue says:

    http://steelecage.com/

IFO Website has been relaunched. Marvin Eastman vs. TBA for their first event.

  12. 45 Huddle says:

.7 is a bad rating for a 4th show. No other way to say it.

  13. 45 Huddle says:

Eric Pele weighed in at 277 lbs. On Sherdog, he said that he got a surgery which helped him get his weight down. He also said his current deal with Bodog is good enough that he wouldn’t want to fight at Heavyweight for the UFC at this time.

So number of legit Super Heavyweights is really dwindling. Eric Pele can make Heavyweight. Brock Lesnar could make Heavyweight. So could James Thompson. Antonio Silva probably could make it, mostly because he is 6’4″ and not any taller. Evan Little Fedor is 255.

I can’t think of even one Top 20 fighter who is over 205 lbs who couldn’t make 265 lbs.

  14. […] MA. The promoters are Butterbean and Corey Fischer. Recognize the name Corey Fischer? We sure do. From our April 12th, 2007 news update: Ohio event promoter Corey Fischer is promoting Cliff “Twin Tyson” Couser for an upcoming MMA […]
