It’s true, it’s damn true

By Zach Arnold | March 6, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

ESPN is reporting that Kurt Angle, famous pro-wrestler who wants to fight everyone in MMA, is allegedly on a client list for Applied Pharmacy, which the Feds allege is connected to an online steroids purchasing investigation. Here’s the original SI article. More details at PW Torch and at the Observer.

Also true is famous Boston Globe boxing & football writer Ron Borges being suspended for two months from his newspaper for plagiarism. Around our circles, Ron was a piñata for parroting the Zuffa Myth last year when putting over UFC big in the newspaper. There’s a ton of coverage online about this story (start with Deadspin), including a report about who pointed out what Borges is doing. It doesn’t always pay to be Ron’s enemy.

  1. 123 Kid says:

Read about it today at work.

This is the biggest news story of the day for MMA. Elite XC wanted to use him to get a big buy PPV. They were courting him big time. This, along with multiple neck surgeries should end any talks with Angle entering MMA. It would tarnish any organization that would use him.

  2. roadblock says:

    Wait, Pro Wrestlers use steroids?

  3. The Gaijin says:

123 Kid = MMACritic on steroids…shut up. I know its not the UFC so you feel the need to denigrate it in some sort of aspect, but seriously…I’ve never seen a bigger “fanboy” outside of the trolls on Sherdog.

UFC talked to him about fighting or working with them too – I guess that tarnishes them??? You’re bias is totally ridiculous.

  5. Next thing you’ll be telling us the fights are fake!

Don’t worry dude…no thrown fights since Franklin/Shamrock. Or maybe Yves vs Hominick.

  7. Chris says:

Pro wrestlers get sucked into steroids. The career they live almost demands it based on injuries, recovery, looks, marketing yourself.

  8. The Gaijin says:

Yves vs. Hominick was legit…that was just a DIRRRTY body shot. Why would the UFC want to throw a fight in a way that the guy they were hoping to hype up for the LW division lost??

Figured this might be up your alley and I guess its semi related to this thread

Allan Coage aka Bad News Allen – Olympic Judo Bronze medallist, WWF and Japanese wrestling star died of a heart attack at 63. I’ve seen him involved in a lot of the early 90’s UWFI stuff and even fighting Sakuraba. …Just thought I’d pass that along…

  10. Armen says:

No big surprise on the Angle story as far as I’m concerned. I think one would have to be foolish to think that the wrestlers with those unnatural physiques are not using steroids to make that body either possible or easier to maintain.

  11. Rollo the Cat says:

Speaking of Pro Rasslin, what’s with Terkay? Is he doing anything in MMA or K1?

  12. Zach Arnold says:

I wrote something earlier tonight about Bad News Allen dying. This one is sad to me because I felt that his career was something that a lot of wrestlers should look at and take example of. A legitimate fighting background in Judo, Montreal Olympian bronze medalist, always carried himself as a legitimate threat no matter where he went, he just understood that in order to be viewed as a credible pro-wrestler you had to have the tools to back it up. He had those.

Guys like him (who worked in New Japan) and Finlay (who worked in the first UWF) understand the psychology of wrestling more than most wrestling school teachers ever will.

  13. roadblock says:

Bad News wrestled some great matches in Japan and in WWF. I always loved his style and thought he really had good skills. I didn’t realize he was an Olympic Bronze Medalist. Makes sense now. I used to pop huge for the Ghetto Blaster. Man Vince’s racism is subtle.

  14. grafdog says:

Remember when the nasty boys beat up Ken hamrock in that hotel room?
Did Ken ever get his revenge?

Big different between a worked and a thrown fight. Who was the guy who put $20k on Hominick the day of the fight?

  16. Xenos says:

Living in southern New England I am very familiar with Borges and his work. Man, I bet WEEI is having a field day with this right now. Aside from Dan Shaughnessy, Borges is probably the most hated sportswriter in the Boston-Providence area.

I was completely unaware of this…interesting.
