Thursday talking chatter

By Zach Arnold | February 22, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

A very interesting development today, as Boxing Scene (which syndicates boxing articles to Fox sports) is now adding MMA coverage. I expect a lot of the major sites to start adding more content shortly.

It looks like more Wall Street analyst-types are starting to focus on the IFL stock, and like last week’s Bloomberg article… this isn’t positive.

Onto today’s headlines.

  1. The Canadian Press (via 680 News): UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia says bring it on
  2. Cox News Service: 5 reasons why MMA is better than anything
  3. The Bangkok Post (Thailand): MMA’s rise from the swamp challenges boxing
  4. Fox Sports: PRIDE 33 event preview
  5. MMA HQ: PRIDE 33 show preview
  6. Gambling 911: PRIDE 33 fighting betting odds now available
  7. TMZ.com: Jim Lampley cops a plea (hat tip: Mikeinformer)
  8. Boxing Scene: PRIDE – the next Casino sport?
  9. The Romeo Observer (Michigan): Jason Ireland prepares for big fight in Las Vegas
  10. UFC Junkie: Interview with Rex Holman
  11. The North Brunswick Sentinel (New Jersey): All Sport Academy hones athletes’ skills to the next level (home to Carmelo Marrero)
  12. Gamespot: THQ – Expect sequels every other year (this includes UFC games)
  13. The Atlanta Journal Constitution: IFL seeks its place in sports scene
  14. Royal Burnell: The Five Points of 2007
  15. UFC Mania: Kenny Florian reports on training with BJ Penn in Hawaii
  16. NBC Sports: Ex-MMA star Lee Murray facing extradition for $105 million USD theft

  1. Jeff says:

To the Bloomberg article, I say ‘Hear! Hear!’. The only proven commodities in MMA is Pride and UFC. Pride is self-destructing (what does THAT prove?), and UFC has had 2 good years in a row. 2 good years does not an industry stalwart make. I know this isn’t the best news for MMA fans, but business is business, and I take my money very seriously.

  2. Mr. Roadblock says:

The IFL stock is grossly overinflated. That is the point of the Bloomberg article. It is advising people to short the stock. It is in no way saying anything disparaging about the IFL as a business or MMA in general.

  3. Mike says:

That boxing scene article on PRIDE is quite the puff piece.

  4. JThue says:

James Lee vs. Travis Wiuff is official, along with the match order for Saturday.

  5. JOSH says:

SOOOO STOKED for PRIDE. Will be there in the 16th row on the floor. Cant wait, the card is rather stacked IMO!

  6. JThue says:

I’m a big fan of PRIDE, but I get depressed looking at the final lineup. This was supposed to be the next step after October, but instead it’s more of a step down in card quality and competitiveness. Granted they’ve been unlucky, but it’s the old tale of good and bad luck in good and bad times…

  7. The Gaijin says:

Talk about “when it rains, it pours”

Seems to be fate just keeps on slowly continuing to hammer nails into PRIDE’s coffin. Honestly 18 months ago if you tried to convince ANYONE that PRIDE would be having this kind of trouble getting fighters on cards and keeping them there AND that this was going to be the final lineup – they’d call you loony.

I guess this also goes to show that their lacksadaisical approach to announcing and setting up matchups right up until the last second really bites you in the ass when you have to deal with commissions and sanctioning bodies.

  8. The Gaijin says:

I’m glad a sports website with the resources of Fox had the ability to still not be able to tell the difference between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira!!!

Well done boys! Excellent research skills – such as going on PRIDE’s website, which while usually woefully outdated has been able to at least provide such hard hitting information.

  9. The MMA Critic says:

Pride USA has been a complete bust so far. I should be called PRIDE LIGHT, because that is exactly what it is. They have dumbed down their product for the US audience.

Not like it matters much, but I won’t be posting her (or anywhere else) for a while. I’ve decided starting at the beginning of the month to give up the majority of the internet and email. I’ve spent far too much time online since the beginning of the year and it is a necessary change. I don’t think I was addicted, but I was definitely heading down that path.

I will still be keeping up on the sport on a superficial level through this podcast and beatdown. And I’m still a Wrestling Observer subscriber. But beyond that, any forums or blogs have just been consuming too much of my time.

    I wish everybody the best.

  10. Zach Arnold says:

Critic – you’re making a mistake giving up our site. Really. 🙂 In all seriousness, I try to spend as much time on here to gather links so that you don’t have to go elsewhere.

In fact, I strongly suggest that you keep checking this site out and also checking Fightlinker.com, which does an excellent job of gathering stories from all the various MMA sites.

I wouldn’t have predicted the line-up now. But I did predict trouble 18 months ago – and got laughed at severely.

  12. The Gaijin says:

And I was one of those people – mea culpa, mea culpa.

  13. Diamond Dave Williams says:

Zach, why do you have to keep slamming Pride. It seems to me when you are challenged on an opinion you go to extremes to push the the other opinion as nonsense or moranic. This seems hiporcritical to me. Try taking the high road and enjoy all of MMA.
