PRIDE 10/21 Las Vegas open post

By Zach Arnold | October 21, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

Butterbean versus Sean O’Haire (image credit: Burning Spirit)

Results/coverage: Sherdog | Observer | F4W Online

Now that the show is over, let’s look at the very mixed media reaction to this event.

  1. Whaledog – “I have to say, it was not a bad show.”
  2. Canadian Press (via CBC Sports): Fedor wins in PRIDE’s US debut
  3. Ivan Trembow: “Some of the fights were good, but the production is the last thing that stood out as being “far advanced” on this show.”
  4. Fight Report: “PRIDE’s production was top notch and the flow of the show went smoothly.”
  5. Fox Sports (Josh Gross): Real Deal wrap-up
  6. Las Vegas Review-Journal: Fedor saves an otherwise lackluster card (attendance claim for show is 11,727)
  7. MMA weekly: “PRIDE promised fans in Las Vegas that they were bringing their full production for their debut in the United States, they weren’t kidding.”
  8. Todd Martin: PRIDE’s Real Deal aptly named

  1. PizzaChef says:

Wow I love that racist remark towards Joey. “He learned the value of hard work!” WTF?

  2. MMA T-Shirts says:

Impressive KO by Lawler. Looking forward to Barnett vs Nastula. Seems like the event is going OK so far – still a real pity that Hunt wasnt on the card – was that why the NSAC were getting booed, do you reckon?

  3. PizzaChef says:

Wow, even under UFC rules PRIDE is still better than the UFC. 😛

And….I dunno why NSAC got booed…Maybe cause of the rules and the judges they use?

Anyone noticed Rampage in the crowd?

Anyways I hope O’Haire can beat up Butterbean…Maybe O’Haire will do a drop kick like Minowa 😀

  4. MMA T-Shirts says:

Wishful thinking on O’Haire 😀 – The neckless wonder dispatched him with 0 trouble. Looks like it’s just you and me on this thread mate 🙂

  5. PizzaChef says:

FEDOR TIME. And people are saying Shogun broke Randleman’s leg.

On a different topic…..Where can I buy PRIDE replica belts? Full size replicas like the ultra deluxe WWF belts on Highspots?

  6. PizzaChef says:

AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH! What happend to the Era music!?!?!?!?!?

  7. Xenos says:

The Era music was good, but this was good too. Does anyone know what the name of his new entrance music is?

  8. PizzaChef says:

What was with showing Coleman’s kids crying….that kind of depressed people……But I did laugh when people were typing “PUNCH HIS KIDS FEDOR!” or “Fedor should kick Coleman’s kids!” lol.

  9. grafdog says:

For a second I thought Coleman was giving his children to Fedor. Kids have no place in the ring, especially when their daddy fell down and hurt himself, thats traumatic. Whats with Coleman landing a couple shots on Fedor after the fight?

Randleman…sheesh, time to retire and Coleman, welcome to king of the cage.

Hunt vs Bean needs to happen in another show, and why was Hunt a no show??
    Great show imo.

I’ll be surprised if Herb is seen in the octagon again.

  10. Royal B. says:

Herb works for NSAC. Not UFC.

BtW, I think he reffed at HEROS as well.

  11. PizzaChef says:

Steve Mazzagatti was referring as well. And…..Herb was also at Dynamite! 2005 and was part of the brawl after the Heath Herring/Yoshihiro “KISS” Nakao thing….Which I heard was planned.

  12. Royal B. says:

btw, who gave the 30-24 desicion?

  13. Allen says:

I think this sums it up well:

    From Dave Meltzer at wrestlingobserver.com:

“There were no fights of the year. There are many shows with better ‘match quality,’ whether we talk MMA or pro wrestling. But the lasting feeling when this was over is if Pride had television in the U.S., the way they were able to tell the story of the main event, and with the production of the show itself, UFC and WWE would be playing catch-up within a year. As good as you think UFC has been, and as professional in putting on a show as WWE looks, this really exposed just how far advanced the Japanese really are at this.”

  14. Ivan Trembow says:

I’m not really sure what broadcast he was watching based on that paragraph, which included no acknowledgment of the extended intermission, the fact that they didn’t have anything with which to fill the intermission, the constant mistakes in fighters’ names, and the unqualified new commentator. Some of the fights were good, but the production is the last thing that stood out as being “far advanced” on this show.

  15. Shaolin says:

Ivan I think if it was not clear already dave is trying to point out the emotion pride puts toward its fighters, to draw fans toward them. Notice tuf lackluster ratings, it could use some emotion like this is what dave is trying to say.

The show was professional, he did say it was japanese that included fighter mistakes, but thats what the crowd wanted, it was hardcore fans in attendance who wanted the japanese product. If that was not obvious enough.

I think you completely missed daves point.

  16. The Citizen says:

Dreamstage, Fox, and whoever is helping Dreamstage produce this show needs to put pressure on any or all athletic commisions to get the stomps, knees on ground, and soccer kicks back into the rules.
There were fights on this card that suffered because these rules were not in place, (Hendo-Vitor to be specific) and these rules allow fighters to make more exciting ground match ups. Please do your best to get these back in.

Also, keep little children out of the venue and out of the ring. When daddy is all bloody and half naked, carrying you around the ring, I hope he is not surprised in a few years when his daughters are bringing back boyfriends that walk around bloody and half naked. Coleman, I am no fighter, but from my seat you embarrased yourself and many others. I feel like I was an unwanted liason in helping scar your daughter’s lives.

The production value was great and on par with the Dynamite Pride/K-1 card I saw in Japan. For the Thomas and Mack center, the pyro, effects, entrances and video were all great and the venue was used to its fullest.

Randleman has got to start doing yoga or something. He has done the same thing over and over and keeps loosing. That is the definition of a fool.

Also, by the last fights the venue was very full, almost packed except for a few scattered seats empty. I’d say it was 30-50 people short of being packed, and for a first show in the us with truncated rules, Pride does not — on the surface — appear to be in any kind of serious trouble.

UFC– put up Chuck and let it happen. You know Chuck is getting old and it is only a matter of time before you throw him to the dogs and get forced into picking up better fighters. Word of mouth is a bitch, and I am hoping that all the empty t.v. and marketing you have done to make D level fighters seem like A level fighters will finally catch up to you. If you are worried about yours or the UFC’s rep, have a best of three match or have alternating rounds in the cage and then in the ring.

Overal, I give the show a solid B.

Experience was an A because I sat next to a cute japanese girl who loved fights more then I did and I snagged her email at the end of the show.

    Yours in truth,
    The Citizen

  17. PizzaChef says:

Las Vegas Review-Journal must of been payed off by Dana to bash the show. I thought it was a fun card, I enjoyed it except for Vitor vs. Henderson even though that fight had a few enjoyable moments.

Although I kinda disagree with everyone about production. It’s still nothing compared to the PRIDE Japanese shows. Maybe they should of brought in the Japanese crew for promos but added English subtitles. It would be better than PRIDE USA’s shit.

Also…..What did Takada say at the end of his speech? He says the same thing at the GP shows and at Otoko Matsuri.

  18. BSP says:

I also enjoyed the show, and thought there were some good fights. Specifically, it was nice to see Nakamura go full-guns. His stand-up has improved quite a bit. I’m also impressed by Nastula. I do hope Pride lets him take on some easier competition so he can build his MMA skills. He has great potential.

The production values were great. I think Dave Meltzer is on the money here. If Pride can do better than their FSN deal, they could pose a real threat to the UFC and pro-wrestling. Also, I think Pride can appeal to those who find the UFC a little red-necky.

One thing must be improved: For the next live show, they need to have something planned for the intermission… promos for upcoming events, a video package about the main event, news in the Pride world, etc. Replaying two fights that we just watched is pretty ridiculous.

Apart from that though, I thought this was a fabulous entrance into the U.S. market.

  19. Mr. Roadblock says:

What Pride should do is just tape 2 or 3 preliminary matches and play them during intermission.

  20. rusticaz says:

Why the Butterbean pic? Fedor and Shogun fight, and “you” put up a butterbean pic. How about a Ken Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz pic, since “you” like to mock freakshow fights.

You know what would be honest? If fightopinion.com reps came out and said they’re pulling for the UFC, that’d be called honesty.

“Pride: the Real Deal” was not “Pride: OWGP finals.” It was still pretty good, and one of the better MMA shows on North American soil in 2006.

Some people are rather ethnocentric or just simplistic. They see something different and they can’t handle it. “english aint yo forst language; wat wrong wit ya.” Yeah, they can’t handle difference. Pride’s show is not like the UFC’s, and at this junction that’s a good thing.

If you saw the fight last night, Butterbean was hilarious. Trigg couldn’t stop laughing throughout. He was this 5’8″ or 5’9″ guy who weighed 400 pounds and looked like the most unstoppable tank on the planet.

You have it all wrong as far as freak shows match-ups. We’re the pro-wrestling fans here. We understand why PRIDE books Giant Silva or Alexandre Lungu. It’s a spectacle.

If you want to indict me on selecting a funny a picture of Butterbean from our friends at Burning Spirit (which has some great screen captures from the Japanese show), then I’m guilty as charged.

Some people are rather ethnocentric or just simplistic. They see something different and they can’t handle it. “english aint yo forst language; wat wrong wit ya.”

I’ll remember this every time I bother linking to a Japanese news or opinion article.

  22. JEFF from Fresno says:

Such a great show, it would be a shame if the company folds within the next year.

To survive in the U.S. they need to get off FSN. That station has done nothing for MMA or TNA. Wouldn’t it be viable for them to move to another cable network like FX which reaches more homes and viewers, it would still be in the same Fox cable family.

  23. Erin says:

Yes Zach, you really do need to branch out what with PuroresuPower.com being soooo American and your hatred of pro wrestling style matches/build up really is embarassingly close minded. [/sarcasm]

  24. Jinchuuman says:

Hey zach “you” have some good coverage of japanese wrestling and mma for a “simplistic” “ethnocentric” “ufc fan”
I had no idea that ortiz/shamrock was a freakshow fight was it because shamrock was “old” or “had no chance to win” or “was beaten the same way as the last fight” sounds a lot like fedor/coleman to me

  25. Zach Arnold says:

To survive in the U.S. they need to get off FSN. That station has done nothing for MMA or TNA. Wouldn’t it be viable for them to move to another cable network like FX which reaches more homes and viewers, it would still be in the same Fox cable family.

I’m convinced that FX will never allow wrestling or MMA on its channel, despite the fact that they had Toughman on several years ago.

And it’s going to hurt that network not having serious fight programming. They have the “reach” in terms of eyeballs to pull it off. The Versus Network (it was renamed from OLN) has been trying with Top Rank Boxing, but the network doesn’t have the reach FX does.

  26. Tomer says:

I still don’t understand why O’Haire was considered a ‘more fair’ matchup for Butterbean considering that O’Haire was 1-1 in MMA entering the fight and last fought a year ago while Butterbean was 6-2-1 in MMA and while he padded his record, fought several times this year. Yes, Hunt does have Split Decision wins over Cro Cop and Silva, but at the same time, styles make fights and both of those were pretty close to begin with. Plus, Butterbean had significant Boxing experience (just like Hunt had K-1 experience).

And I still don’t get why the NSAC couldn’t sanction Butterbean-Hunt, but had no problems with Baroni-Nishijima or Barnett-Nastula (with the eventual losers having a combined 1-5 record entering their fights last night). Pretty inane decision making by the NSAC, if you ask me…

  27. JThue says:

Why do people STILL not get that NSAC didn’t pull Hunt, but Hunt’s VISA was the problem? They even told us on the freaking show!

Trembow and others: to say that they had nothing planned for intermission is a completely off the mark call to make. They did during intermission what PRIDE always does during intermission – recap fights, and show one fight in particular in real time, one round or entire fight, whatever fits in – then preview the remaining card. Anyone who has ever seen a PRIDE JP PPV surely recognized this instantly. The problem is not that nothing was planned, but that a wrong decision was made in not “translating” intermission to a more US-friendly(more professional looking entertainment, less analysis and recap) format.

My head is hurting from listening to Mauro for four hours. Trigg has a little too much to say as well. I guess the worst part here was that whenever those two actually stopped talking for five seconds, there was a third guy there to step in. ARGH! Slow down!

Voice-woman was overused, although it was nice to actually see what she looks like.

Fights were fine to good. Crowd absolutely amazing. TV production seemed more FSN than regular PRIDE, but kudos for some of the video packages. I liked how the video hype-packages were done just like they’re usually done for their Japanese shows, especially Coleman-Fedor.

11,700 is one damn good number. Going in I was prepared to be impressed with any number over 11,500, regardless of whether a third of it was comped or not. The crowd looked and sounded very good on TV. Someone around here owes PRIDE an apology 😉

Silva calling out Chuck Liddell – PRICELESS

AWFUL idea to let the Coleman girls in there, but once it was a fact, they handled it ok I guess.

Overall I was impressed by how well this was set up by a company running the US for the first time. Big props to Sakakibara and Fisher for pulling this off, and to Takada for his English flirtation. “Tonight we make history, next we BREAK history”. Regardless of how good or more likely)bad the state of the company is, that right there is what you want to hear.

Nowhere near being the best MMA show of the year, but that was never the point either. PRIDE left a mark, it didn’t look or feel anything like UFC, in one night they made IFL and WFA look like a bunch of nothing, they drew the crowd even with the supposedly insane ticket prices, they did a great job of making Ceasar’s Palace look good, the stage setup made WWE and UFC look like jokes(about time), and the fighters they wanted to parade didn’t screw up. Well done, thumbs up. Now the challenge becomes to improve in the areas they could have done better here and build a differently structured card(with focus on competition this time) for February. Surely the fans who came from all over the world to support the debut show won’t all be able to make it back in four months.

The humilty and professionalism with which Sakakibara and company have handled this debut show ended up being a sharp contrast to how I was lead to believe this would be handled based on numerous stories told on this site with regards to the (lack of)promoting and structuring capabilities of Sakakibara and PRIDE US.

I hope they let Barnett rest on NYE, and rather give him time to heal up fully for the next US show. Fight of the Night goes to Nakamura – Galbraith.

  28. Jason says:

Anybody catch the FC Dallas vs Coloradio Rapids game? I did, great soccer match.

  29. Zach Arnold says:

Anyone who has ever seen a PRIDE JP PPV surely recognized this instantly.

You and I have seen the Japanese PPVs. The majority of MMA fans have not. There is a real disconnect, I think, between the hardcore PRIDE fans, MMA fans, and just the average American. I’m not saying this to be anti-PRIDE fan, I’m saying this because I don’t want PRIDE fans to be surprised when they see criticism of “Japanese-style” things they see (such as intermissions during big shows). It isn’t, dare I say, an “American” concept of how a show is produced.

My head is hurting from listening to Mauro for four hours.

This was not a shining performance for him.

11,700 is one damn good number. Going in I was prepared to be impressed with any number over 11,500, regardless of whether a third of it was comped or not. The crowd looked and sounded very good on TV. Someone around here owes PRIDE an apology 😉

Between upcoming site op-eds and the radio show, I think you’ll see how each writers on this site stands in regards to the PRIDE event very shortly. There isn’t a shared opinion. The reaction is all across the board.

The humilty and professionalism with which Sakakibara and company have handled this debut show ended up being a sharp contrast to how I was lead to believe this would be handled based on numerous stories told on this site with regards to the (lack of)promoting and structuring capabilities of Sakakibara and PRIDE US.

As displayed in the event post-show press conference, Fishman sounds and comes across as a money mark. You can visibly tell that he has no true idea what the exact history of PRIDE’s company is. It’s going to be an interesting 2007 for Fishman in many respects, now that he has taken such a public stance in siding with DSE (and more importantly, Sakakibara).

Fishman and DSE have not been pressed yet by the American media on issues pertaining to the company. Once they are pressed, the question is whether or not they can adequately handle the challenge.

  30. JThue says:

True that they haven’t been asked any tough questions, but fact of the matter is they actually did manage to bring the show overseas, bring with them important japanese personalities, do local promotion, deliver what was promised back home, pull a crowd smack dab in the midle of UFC country, etc. The link-up with Fishman and CPalace also certainly has come across this weekend as making for a very solid base for PRIDE in the US(for now anyway). Fishman saying he’d been in talks with Saka for three years now and him, with his credentials taken into account. being referred to as President of PRIDE USA really sounded quite reassuring on PRIDE’s part, rather than the partnership and decision to run in USA coming off as being 90% due to the problems back home and an act of panic.

If Dana White is the Vince McMahon of MMA, has Ed Fishman just put on a Ted Turner mask? 😀 I just can’t help but draw the comparison, with PRIDE now also drawing the educated fans while UFC fans pop for Stone Cold Tito 🙂

Anyways, not at all has anything you(Zach)’ve written is this thread come off as anti-PRIDE. I merely wanted to point out to others that the intermission was a thing as opposed to nothing. It was probably the wrong thing, but something nonetheless 😉

  31. Zach Arnold says:

If Dana White is the Vince McMahon of MMA, has Ed Fishman just put on a Ted Turner mask? 😀 I just can’t help but draw the comparison, with PRIDE now also drawing the educated fans while UFC fans pop for Stone Cold Tito 🙂

Ted Turner ended up losing a lot of money with WCW. Time Warner ended up closing WCW’s shop for good. And Turner was ousted from the superstation (TBS) that he created.

I don’t think Ed would appreciate the comparison. 🙂

  32. JThue says:

I don’t believe in destiny, Zach 😛 – he’s only replicated the early parts so far 😀

  33. I was going to post my thoughts but I’d only mirror pretty much everything that JThue said in his first post. He hit it all pretty much on the money if you ask me.

The only thing I can add is that Pride really needs better english language announcers. I have nothing against Mauro and Trigg (although I don’t think either one were at their best last night–and it was a lousy night to choke), but come on…it’s like watching minor league baseball compared to Bas and the Fight Professor. Even Joe Rogan kicks Trigg’s ass in the broadcast booth, at least Rogan projects emotion and excitement.

  34. Mr. Roadblock says:

WCW blew WWF out of the war for 2 straight years by putting on bigger, better shows and upping the ante as far as bringing in talent from around the globe (in particular Mexio and Japan) and stacking cards with 3-4 matches per card that would be a main event in WWF. That’s exactly what Pride is to UFC. Where WCW went wrong is that they tried to make feuds go on forever with no finishes and they kept booking stars that were past their due dates when they should have pushed Jericho, Benoit, Booker T and Guerrero. That is unlikely to happen in Pride. Pride has been very good about bringing in talent from across the globe and having the up and comers and top guys face each other. UFC has not been good about that. UFC has been bringing in scrubs. For the most part cheap scrubs. Midwestern wrestlers who are unpolished and grind out boring decisions. All the while they try to protect Franklin, Liddell, Ortiz and the popular TUF fighters. This is similar both to what 1990-1997 WWF and 1998-1999 WCW did.

Zach, you should just come clean and honestly admit that you dislike Pride and want it to fail. You have 2 phenomenal websites the fightopinion radio show is top notch and you are very in touch with the fight game and every one of your articles is well researched and intersting. No one can dare say that you are ethnocentric or unworldly. But you have a clear bias against Pride.

  35. Zach Arnold says:

Even Joe Rogan kicks Trigg’s ass in the broadcast booth, at least Rogan projects emotion and excitement.

If PRIDE had done a studio show for their PPV intermission or did something where they have a stage set-up at the arena, you could have Frank and a co-host do analysis of the fights. As an analyst, Trigg is really good.

  36. Luxury Liner says:

Pride’s first show seemed to be a pretty good success. But how would I know? I tried to order the event, but my cable company had “technical difficulties.” I have never had these problems ordering UFC events. I have heard similar complaints from numerous people on other web forums. It seems to me that Pride has to get this mess cleared up if they want to survive in the states. Judging from the reaction to the level of production and (stipulated) fighter salaries, I’m willing to bet the only way Pride could turn a profit is by PPV buys, cause I doubt they covered their losses at the gate. They are planning another event for three weeks after the Superbowl? The UFC usually puts together a good card for Super Saturday, so this may be a problem for them. I can barely afford one PPV per month!!! I guess whoever puts together the best card wins my dollars!! Competition is good, and this will drive both the UFC and Pride to new heights.

  37. Royal B. says:

    Fishman’s not Ted Turner.

    He’s Cary Silkin.

  38. Zach Arnold says:

    Fishman’s not Ted Turner.

    He’s Cary Silkin.

You’re going to get heat for that comparison, but I’ll be damned if it’s not the most accurate one made yet. Good job, Royal.

  39. Ivan Trembow says:

I don’t think anyone in the pro wrestling business has anything bad to say about Cary Silkin, if that is the comparison that is being made. That would also make Pride the MMA equivalent of Ring of Honor.

  40. Zach Arnold says:

I don’t think anyone in the pro wrestling business has anything bad to say about Cary Silkin, if that is the comparison that is being made.

Sure. Ticket scalper. Ask the state of New Jersey. 🙂 Or Penn. Mr. Tickets Inc.

You got the latter part right in regards to PRIDE in America.

  41. David says:

    A few notes:

-Barnett was underwhelming in victory, and Mauro and Trigg sounded like morons for being shocked that a Judo gold medalist could take down a heavy wrestler.

-Had the fight been under Pride rules, Fedor would have beaten Coleman in no more than 2 minutes. Coleman shot in, Fedor stuffed it and was in perfect position to start kneeing his head, but the ridiculously stupid UFC rules came into play and we were forced to watch Coleman cling to Fedor’s leg for like 6 minutes.

-Cro Cop is the only one who has a chance against Fedor. Barnett can’t hang with him on the feet and won’t be able to submit him, Nog has tried 3x and not come close, Silva would get annihilated and probably knocked out on the feet, and he isn’t going to fight his own brother. Let’s not forget, Mirko did better on the ground against Fedor than Nog did, completely styming his atttempts to pass guard. If Mirko had not gassed, I think he could have won.

-Baroni has star potential, because he has the look, and more importantly, the style that American fans want to see. He aggressively took Nishijima down, and pounded the shit out of him relentlessly (on that note, Frank Trigg doesn’t need to inform us that Baroni punched him in the face, unless he is going to make it into a somewhat funny story. If Trigg had said “Baroni hit me and then I woke up 5 minutes later” it would have been better than “Baroni hit me and (because I am so tough) it stung a little bit.”)

-Why can’t they bring Bas and Quadros back? Seriously. Everyone I have talked to, from hardcore fans to new fans who I have shown Pride to, thinks Mauro is terrible. He sounds corny and rehearsed, and the two of them have no chemistry at all. I don’t feel confident in what Ranallo is telling me, as opposed to when Quadros is broadcasting. Bas is 10x funnier than Trigg and clicks very well with Quadros, which makes a lot of difference.

-The NSAC really needs to accept knees to the head of a downed fighter, or wrestlers will continue to have an unfair advantage in America, especially the UFC, with no knees to counter takedowns, elbows, and in many American shows, the option to push a fighter against the cage and completely eliminate submissions from the bottom from the equation.

  42. stephan says:

    i just saw the show…

    1. emilianenko would have beaten coleman in 30 second if the show was in japan … it would have been something like zulu vs fedor.

    2. it was very frustrating seeing the referees stoping the fight after the first good punch. I think that’s why mirko did not come… he loves to kick and punch when the opponent is knocked out :))))))))

    3. what’s up with all americans and japanese ? i would rather see more russians , brasilians or est europeans.

  43. grafdog says:

Hammer house strategy=takedown asap, during the main event I could tell Fedor was carrying Mark. Pride management may have even made this suggestion after randleman failed so miserably, but i doubt it. Fedor mentioned later that he wanted to fight longer to work on some technique.

I’m all for standing elbows + knees on the ground. I just don’t see much skill involved in elbowing, kicking or stomping a downed opponent. And i’d rather not see anyone go half blind from an elbow to the eyesocket while on the ground.

Fedor vs George/Josh will be a barnburner of a fight for NYE.
Billed as fist of the north star vs fist of the north star, just like in the manga(comic book).

  44. JThue says:

Two people now have felt the need to point out that Fedor would have won quicker in Japan.

Eh, no he wouldn’t have. As he stated himself after the fight, he DID NOT WANT to finish it quickly. He wanted a workout, and got it. Even with the 5 min rounds it was obvious in the first one that Fedor didn’t go balls to the wall and was perfectly happy swinging a bit and staying out of trouble in the clinch.

Re: PRIDE/ROH – the fans’ reaction to the foreign stars, and the foreign stars in turn being overwhealmed by the support had me thinking of Muta in ROH right away 🙂

  45. David says:

    JThue,

I didn’t see Fedor’s post fight comments. However, I think we can safely assume that he didn’t let the fight go longer for “workout reasons.” I don’t think it is unreasonable at all to assume that Pride offered Fedor more money to let the fight get into the second round.

Also, I wonder if Pride paid Coleman money to have his kids come into the ring after the (inevitable) loss and have them meet Fedor…

  46. Ajax says:

Quick question for Zach or anyone really. Is there any chance in hell that the normal Pride rules (stomps etc.) will ever be permitted in the U.S.?

Did anyone find it hilariously odd that the PRIDE cameras kept focusing on Coleman’s daughters crying? They kept trying to pull the whole, ‘my father is my hero’ motif. Coleman either needs to retire or go back to juicing and cross training with Miletich.

Randleman was absolutely pathetic, I never thought he could stoop so low but not being able to escape from a basic heel hook with his kind of strength? Shogun looked insanely dynamic, even when the ref prevented him from doing his attack.

Vitor Belfort is so washed up, he got outboxed by Henderson and displayed no significant grappling skills. He should be relegated to KOTC.

Butterbean is the shit, he owned Sean O’Haire so bad, easily gave him a sick concussion. I’m glad Butterbean is in MMA. Phil Baroni’s grappling skills have gotten much better, and Lawler made an impressive debut with that killer knee. I loved his little celebration before adding a one-two decimation to Villasenors face.

Things that stood out in regard to the Real Deal production values:

    1. Japanese announcers with broken english should never be used. Besides mispronouncing the names, they also said that fighters were 5’1″ instead of 5′ 10″ and “weighted” instead of “weighed”.

    2. I always thought that Announcer Chick was Japanese. I like her style, however, she should stop giving the fighters names before they come out of the ground and than immediately give the longer version 10 seconds later. The longer version before they poke there heads out would be much better.

    3. Entrance music was awful.

    4. It took the fighters way too long to come up from under the stage and actually walk to the ring.

    5. Mauro has to stop gushing about how awesome Pride is…the fans are not stupid, if we see superior fighters than UFC we will know it.

    6. Trigg needs to shut up…he makes a few good points but comes across as arogant while he tries to talk down to the audience.

    7. Definately should have either shown some undercard matches during the intermission or even better, some Pride Highlights to show just how much better the fight talent is versus UFC.

Coleman should be bitch slapped for bringing his girls into the ring. Did anyone besides me think that the crying looked very staged? Did anyone catch where he told them to say “hi to Fedor” and “that he is a nice man!” Yeah, a nice man who just beat down there washed up daddy.

    9. They should have brought the drums…they are the most dramatic part of the Pride Show!

    – They both gave the wrong height, and as you yourself point out, Lenny(sp?) Hart isn’t Japanese. This was obviously not a language issue but a case of different stats being handed out to different people. They could have had the Buffer Bros. out there and it still would have been out of sync with the on screen-stats. Or they could have borrowed Mike Goldberg to tell us that “fighter x stands five feet in which 11 inches” 😀

“I like her style, however, she should stop giving the fighters names before they come out of the ground and than immediately give the longer version 10 seconds later.”

    – Yes, definitely, but it’s not like it was her own idea. Why she stepped in for about three fights I don’t kow, but regardless, three announcements of each fighter is over the top when all is done in English. The whole point of having two people announce the entrance is to have one in each language. I sure hope this error was as glaringly obvious to the producers as it was to the audience.

“Did anyone catch where he told them to say “hi to Fedor” and “that he is a nice man!” Yeah, a nice man who just beat down there washed up daddy.”

    – Of all the bad decisions that were made in that situation, that was perhaps the only part where Coleman did the right thing in trying to make it clear to his daughters that MMA is a sport and not a hate fight.

What are you saying about Cary Silkin? He’s a ticket scalper?
