UFC Media Links
By Luke | October 16, 2006
Here’s a sample of the media coverage UFC is getting today. My favourite is the Couture piece by Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press. The other two are good articles as well, about Silva’s destruction of Rich Franklin, and what it means for UFC’s business.
One quick link to point out is this list of fighter suspensions by the Nevada State Athletic Commission coming out of the UFC 64 event. Both Rich Franklin & Jon Fitch are medically suspended with nasal fractures until 4/9/2007 (unless medically cleared by a doctor sooner).
Update: Poor Joe Rogan. He won’t have Wesley Snipes to push around anymore.
- Boston Herald – Silva proves point in UFC
- Las Vegas Sun – UFC takes first steps to go Global
- Canadian Press (via CBC Sports): Former UFC champion Randy Couture retired but still the face of MMA (this link also includes UFC 64 salary figures)
- The Rebel Yell (UNLV): Silva knocks out the ‘Ace’
- PW Insider: ESPN won’t allow UFC ads to air on their national or local networks
- Houston Chronicle: Silva delivers a lesson in Muay Thai
- UFC HP: Brandon Vera vs. Frank Mir signed for UFC 65
Misc. Links
- The London Times: European Union seeks to regulate internet videos (this will effect all European internet users who post video content online, MMA-related or not)

Announced attendance and gate for the Las Vegas card was 10,863 and $2,314,000, according to the UFC. That’s separate from pay-per-view revenue, which the UFC does not release. Fighters’ purses totalled $209,000.
Man, that sucks.
Does anyone know (for future reference) where you can get hold of Randy Couture’s pre event picks? Would be interesting to read.
The fighters’ purses totals does not include the PPV cut for the headliners (likely all four title match contenders, which will be at least mid-six figures for Franklin and less for the other three). And it probably does not count the (small) bonuses awarded for fight of the night. Though that number really only matters to the guys fighting for less than $10,000.
I certainly wouldnt assume that all 4 get any cut of the PPV. I would be surprised if any did to be honest. As far as I know, that sort of thing is discussed / decided upon on a fighter by fighter basis and I dont know if any of these guys have the bargaining power to demand a PPV cut.
One other thing I noticed – on the suspensions list it says Cecil “The worlds most dangerous judge” Peoples, scored the Florian vs Sherk fight 50-45. That would certainly make a lot more sense than 50-48. Could it just have been an announcing error again, like the Gurgel vs Abbadi fight? Wasnt it him who couldnt fill in the frickin form right on that one too?!?
ufc = Scrooge
I’ve just seen that Wesley Snipes link… What an absolute frickin tool! Cant he just be satisfied with 200 million (or whatever) instead of trying to sneak an extra 7m out of the tax man?! Enjoy jail you greedy bastard!
*sorry – touchy subject, i’m very poor!* 😀
