Dana White vs. Jerry Millen

By Zach Arnold | September 22, 2006

By Zach Arnold

If the name Jerry Millen doesn’t sound familiar to you, then here’s a brief description of him. He’s based out of Detroit, made his name in television production, has done some stints in Hollywood, and does all of PRIDE’s American video editing.

With this in mind, here’s quite a news item (from WO):

There was an unannounced and impromptu UFC vs. Pride showdown last night on the Scott Ferrall show on Sirius Satellite radio Ch. 101. I didn’t hear it, but Jerry Millen, who is the producer of the Pride shows, was guest. He’s the guy whose voice you hear when they translate the fighters who can’t talk English like Fedor or Wanderlei Silva in the interviews. He was running down UFC for a while. I guess Dana White heard about it and called up. They want at it. Millen accused White of being afraid of putting on Wanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Liddell. White brought up Silva lost to Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz and Millen said that was ten years ago (well, seven and eight to be exact). Lots of swearing. Millen kept talking about how much bigger Pride was world wide, and White said that Pride was going out of business.

It sure sounds like Dana is paying close attention to PRIDE these days. Dana’s pretty blunt about his feelings.

  1. Tony says:

I downloaded this. Too bad, the show is utterly unlistenable as Ferrall talks over a bed of loud music – and while he knew a little about fighting, he’d have been better just staying out of the way rather than constantly interjecting.

I think people are making more of this than it really was.

BTW…White came off better than Millen IMO.

  2. Caleb says:

anyone have a link to where it can be downloaded?

  3. Preach says:

Yeah, Dana came off much better than Millen. And to those that are dissing Dana for all his swearing: Hell, what would YOU do, if someone put down you and your product in front of a public audience?

  4. SpinningKimura says:

You could tell Dana was really upset as soon as he got on the phone. He went straight into the insults, saying Jerry Millen was the equivalent of Pride’s janitor, best boy, and key grip(Dana also called Millen a retard and a bitch). He really went out of his way to bad-mouth/bury the whole Pride organization during what was supposed to be promotion for the Pride’s Vegas show. WOW. Millen was definitely more civil during the interview.

  5. Liger05 says:

pretty funny how Dana is quick to mention Silva’s losses in UFC but never mentions how Liddell lost vs Quinton Jackson.

  6. HijoDelOso says:

Its Vince vs Bish all over again. Great stuff. 🙂

  7. Mose says:

Caleb, this one worked for me: http://www.thinkvegan.com/audio.zip

  8. Mr1000Cent says:

Yeah, it’s Vince vs Bish all over again, but on a much grander worldwide scale. Hopefully if Pride sticks around, this could make for a tremendous MMA scene, and bring in more fans in the process.

  9. rabies says:

They both tried to put a spin on what they were saying.

But damn that host was annoying and that god-damn music, was the producer a 14-year old on meth and esctasy?

  10. Val says:

Dana/UFC should not have called out Wanderlei out to the ring and announce the fight against Liddell for November back in July.

He totally fucked up his own promotion by introducing Wanderlei/PRIDE. Every other answer that he gave Millen was “PRIDE is going out of business in 3 months, blah blah blah”. Couldn’t he come up with something other than that? As a president of a promotion company, the way Dana dealt with Millen was very unprofessional and immature.

  11. Royal B. says:

Honestly, Dana should have just STFV and smiled. Let PRIDE hang themselves.

  12. Steven says:

Great listen, if you get a chance. As far as Dana White VS. Jerry Millen in my opinion Jerry Millen came off way more professional than Dana. I mean is Dana the pres. of a company or some screaming baby? Every time Millen tried to make the conversation legitimate Dana had no response or starting name calling and saying PRIDE is going out of business, They are having problems in Japan, Jerry can come work for the UFC, REAL DEAL event will suck? I mean he just kept on and on making no sense. I heard the entire show and Jerry had only good things to say about the UFC, it fighters and how they have really helped MMA in America. It just sounds like Dana white doesn’t want anyone else in the game, but he needs to grow up and realize that for MMA to grow in America it’s needs competition. Dana didn’t invent MMA he fell into it and SPIKE TV saved him!
Jerry Millen (PRIDE) 1…Dana White (UFC) 0
    Let’s get a re-match!

  13. Who cares how “professional” Dana White is. Jesus, I just enjoy the fact that he says exactly what is on his mind..good..bad or otherwise.

I’m a business manager and I tell my clients just how it is. I never censore myself and guess what, in 3 years I’ve added double the amount of new clients. I’m about the least “professional” person I know and it works for me, just like it works for Dana.

  14. Oh..and by the way, Spike TV didn’t “Save’ the UFC or Dana White. I’m sure Dana had to really sell spike on the idea. Thats being a good salesman.

  15. Ommabudsman says:

Jerry basically resorted to grade-school antics by repeatedly posing the same rehtorical question to Dana “why isn’t Chuck fighting Wanderlei?,” putting Dana on the defense through out the interview. Dana to his discredit, did not debate this point well and resorted to how bad Wanderlei got beat rather than elborating on the negotiations. Jerry implied that UFC backed out and its their fault, but did not offer any reason or detailed information on the negotiations either, which is obviously BS (same goes for Dana saying he doesn’t know why Pride can’t come to terms).

There’s one detail to the negotiations that Jerry and Dana let’s slip early in the rukus that doesn’t get much emphasis, but is apparently one of the major keys to breakdown. Pride wants Wanderlei to fight for one fight and Dana wants Wanderlei for three. The fact that Wanderlei got KOed only emphasizes the need for UFC to tie Wanderlei to a longer contract in the event he takes Chuck’s belt, otherwise you have a damaged fighter walk away with the UFC belt. Would you make that deal?

Dana would have looked much better if he explained his position on the contract. Anything else looks sounds like an excuse to backout.

  16. Bowlby says:

If Chuck were to fight Wanderlei, what organization would they fight it? Pride allows knees and stomps to the head of downed opponents which some Pride fighters like Shogun Rua utilize alot. I like the competitive nature between the established UFC and the up and coming Pride FC, as long as its not all talk and someday we will see a fight like Wanderlei vs. Chuck or Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia. I wish i heard the arguement between Dana White and Jerry Millen in detail. I don’t know much about Millen, but Dana White has done a great job in the past 2 years in marketing the UFC and getting MMA on cable TV.

  17. bowlbys dream came true says:

    only took two years…
