MMA fighter ordered to undergo sanity test

By Zach Arnold | September 14, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

From the Washington Post:

A Loudon County judge today agreed to review a request for a mental health assessment for Carlos Alberto de Oliveira, a Brazilian professional jujitsu fighter accused of trying to open the cabin door of a Dulles-bound airliner Tuesday night as it cruised at 30,000 feet over Tennessee.

Yamasaki said de Oliveira, whose name is listed on a Web site for International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, has also achieved some notoriety in Japan where he has fought in ultimate fighting tournaments with the Brazilian Top Team, a Brazil based jujitsu team that has spawned hundreds of schools around the world.

Ultimate fighting tournament?! Great, another journalist that has very little MMA knowledge writing about MMA. So what else is new?

  2. dave says:

I agree with chuck this reporter has no clue about the sport of MMA nor is it revelent that he competes in the sport of MMA

  3. CDUBB3 says:

The bottom line is this idiot tried to open a airplane door while 30,000 ft in the air . Right now only the fighters can discredit the sport who cares if the writter know nothing about mma, if fighters keep opening doors on planes and robbing banks its gonna reflect on the sport which is gonna crash and burn before it even takes off .

  4. Chuck says:

Yeah, that was super retarded that Oliveira tried to do that. Hopefully he gets put away in an insane asylum, and away from MMA and society.

I agree with you guys. However this guy is not a professional fighter nor a mma fighter. He holds a black belt in BJJ but is known in Brazil as a big wannabe. The real question that should be asked is: what the hell was he doing in Tokyo with the Brazilian Top Team? After all, he is not even a sparring partner to the other guys. There has to be a reason behind it.
