K-1’s message to PRIDE

By Zach Arnold | September 7, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

Today is the start of the heat-up for this weekend’s PRIDE show in Saitama (with two mega-matches on the card). Instead, K-1/HERO’s cleverly scheduled a press conference for today to announce a fight between Kazushi Sakuraba and Yoshihiro Akiyama in the second round of the HERO’s Light Heavyweight tournament (10/9 Yokohama Arena event). Shungo Oyama faces Melvin Manhoef in the other tournament match. Guess which announcement has top media headlines today? Yes, the Sakuraba fight announcement.

Meanwhile, today’s PRIDE coverage involved Josh Barnett talking about wanting to do a Northern Lights Bomb in his match against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

“Guess which announcement has top media headlines today?”

i don’t know what this means. some web site has hero’s as top story, some like sponichi battle has pride as top story, some others have prowrestling as top story. in some case, hero’s is top story only because they made announcement late in day. many sports-shi web report the most recent story at top.

Look at the newspapers today – K-1 got top billing in most of them with the Sakuraba announcement.

It’s clear that in the public relations war, K-1 is starting to toy around with PRIDE (despite PRIDE having two great matches for this weekend’s show).

  3. kaku says:

well, i only passed by the convenience store on the way to work, and all i saw was matsui matsui matsui (yankees). i did not have time to read, but you cannot tachiyomi sports-shi anyway. do you have a link to how to see this information without going to convenience store or newspaper stand? i would like to know it.

by the way, did you hear about pride 109 promotion? it seems it was pretty popular, so police had to move people for traffic.

maybe in media k-1 is getting attention, but i talk to my friends at my dojo and also mma fans, and all they say is, “they are sending sakuraba to die again!”
