UFC 59 – The Judges

By Zach Arnold | April 15, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

The name of the event is “Reality Check,” and depending on who you talk to, it seems that maybe the judges scoring tonight’s fights at the UFC show might be in need of a reality check. 🙂

I highly encourage ranting or disagreement for this posting.

Meanwhile, some fans will need to be consoled after tonight’s show.

Update: MMAFighting.com is reporting that Tito Ortiz has been medically suspended for three months.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports that Dana White is interested in running a show in Texas.

  1. Roadblock says:

Maybe people will finally stop complaining about Pride and admit it is far and away the superior of the two major MMA companies. UFC routinely has horrendous decisions and recently a high percentage of fights going to decisions. Tonights show was a let down I felt. Furthermore they waste so much time on their TV broadcasts. Looking at the results
    – Thiago Alves defeated Derrek Noble by TKO at 2:54 of Rd.1
    – Jason Lambert defeats Terry Martin by TKO at 2:37 of Rd.2
    – David Terrell defeats Scott Smith by RNC at 3:08 of Rd.1

Why did none of those fights make the air but Rogan and Goldy pontificating about nonsense between every fight did? The Alves fight lasted 2 minutes and 6 seconds, the Terrell fight lasted a whopping 1 minute 52 seconds and Terrell is the number 2 or 3 guy at 185 in UFC. It is bizarre management over there.

Back to decisions, here is an off the top of my head list of horrendous decisions in UFC in the past year or so.

Tito/Forrest could go either way as to who won but there is no way it was a 30-27 or 28-27 fight. What the hell are those scores.

    Other bad decisions
    Monson/Cruz
    Jardine/Bonnar
    Diaz/Sanchez
    Diaz/Riggs
    Hughes/Verissimo
    Ortiz/Belfort

I made this list about 2 weeks ago and had more fights on it. I’m confused by trying to wrap my head around tonight. I’ll be back when I remember more bad calls. But Cecil Peoples needs to go and so does this Rubio clown who had it 30-27. Cecil Peoples is always involved in bad calls, he’s the Nick Patrick of MMA.

  2. Zach Arnold says:

Nick Patrick is a wonderful professional wrestling referee. You leave him alone!

  3. Jason says:

Hell I thought Forrest was robbed too there Roadblock but I tend to stay away from the whole “crying” thing. Move to Japan

  4. Al Yu says:

Can someone confirm all of the judges for UFC 59?

  5. Mike says:

That shot at the nWo’s referee of choice was uncalled for. Also, I don’t think all questionable decisions are bad decisions. While it was a close fight, Tito probably did win tonight. Forrest fought very well, but he never had Tito in danger of losing.

  6. Amy Robinson says:

Uh, did anyone eles see AA’s eyes wide open, and hands up when the ref stopped that fight? I had to replay it on the tivo of couple of times just to be sure I saw it right (and I did).

  7. Maxomillion Solaris says:

AA’s legs were not even moving, he was out. Sylvia looks really funny and akward in there, but he took the punch and caught the reckless AA. He over estimated his opponent, one of the worst things one can do.

Tito barely got pasted a man who knows only how to punch. Forrest fights with little or no technique and all heart. Reminds me a little bit of how Jerome Le Banner is always swinging away, then always getting knocked out. Exciting to watch, but pointless and an ultimate waste of energy in the end.

UFC is boring. They substitute marketing and advertising for their lack of talent and payscale. Annoying announcers, sponsorship overload, and fighters with lack of ability.

I will be skipping Hughes-Gracie and the UFC in general until GSP is signed to kick the crap out of “The Protected One.” As far as Hughes-
Gracie, this fight has the appeal of eating a box of Lucky Charms — fun for the first 10 seconds, but then really dumb once it goes down.

  8. Jeynesey says:

Urgh… I would seriously like to become active on, and enjoy this site but alas, the dominant voice (or at least the longest post) is another bloody Pride nuthugger.

I don’t know if DSE is too thrilled about the translation of those Gendai articles. 🙂 However, I would like to think that this site is open to any and all voices. I don’t edit the comments (I only get rid of the spam, but I have a program that does that for me), so if you want to – go ahead and state your opinions.

  10. Jeynesey says:

    Hey Zach…

I have listened to all the radio episodes and think it’s a very good show – very varied and quite different and insightful. I was actually only bitching about Roadblocks post stating that “everyone should just admit Pride is better” bla bla bla. I just find it so boring and unneccessary. Both orgs are generally very good, but BOTH have serious downsides… The people who run this site are abundantly aware of that fact, unfortunately Roadblock isn’t.

The extra amusing thing was that of the fights he listed

    Monson/Cruz
    Jardine/Bonnar
    Diaz/Sanchez
    Diaz/Riggs
    Hughes/Verissimo
    Ortiz/Belfort

I only think 1, maybe 2 were the wrong decision and even then, there is an argument for both sides. Pride has had equally contentious decisions recently but apparently that is of little concern to Roadblock.

I will agree with is that Cecil Peoples has to go, and more generally, the state of reffing in the UFC and in MMA in general needs to be standardised and improved.

I was under the impression that fighters were given credit for stuffing the takedown – this CANNOT be the case, as Diaz lost 30-27 despite stuffing many takedowns, and obviously and most contentiously, Forrest lost 30-27 on one of the judges scorecards despite stuffing maybe 10 takedowns in the last 2 rounds.

  11. Robert Poole Jr says:

I disagree that Pride is better. UFC generally gets things right and is completely legitimizing and mainstreaming MMA which considering Senator McCain and others trying to get it banned years ago is a huge step for the sport.

As for decisions I thought Griffin beat Ortiz 29-28 personally but apparently the 29-27 judge gave Tito a 2 point round in the first.. and the 30-27 judge was on crack. I could have seen the 2 point round if you logically give rounds 2 and 3 to Griffin and then we see a Draw.

There have been Pride decisions that didn’t jive either but that’s why you don’t want to leave the fight in the hands of the judges.

I think Ortiz has become more and more disappointing. He was owned by Lidell and Couture and Vitor and Griffin probably did enough to win yet he squeaked out. Add in his only big win was against a way over the hill Ken Shamrock and that he hasn’t really dominated a single big name from his division in years and I wonder how much longer he has to go.

The positive for UFC is that their homebred TUF stars are showing they belong which is extremely important for the company to build their own talent rather than taking guys who made their names for someone else.
