Wall Street Journal on MMA

By Rob Sayers | March 16, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

By Rob Sayers

The Wall Street Journal posted an article which focuses on how the UFC is aiming to replace boxing as the USA’s combat sport of choice. While at first it appears to be an informative look at how MMA is gaining more mainstream popularity, it quickly takes a turn for the predictable.

Instead of staying on topic, a Mr. Peter Sanders decides to use buzzwords such as carnage, bloodthirsty, and my personal favorite “human cockfighting”. In attempting to write the sensationalist article of the week, Sanders goes into detail about the dangerous submissions cutting off the ability to breath and of course the ever popular description of the barely padded gloves.

But our friend Pete doesn’t stop at just stretching the truth. He he decides to outright lie when he states that the UFC banned techniques such as biting and eye gouging after the Zuffa buy-out in an attempt to seek sanctioning. Just a bit of research would have shown that these were banned at UFC 1, an event that actually was marketed as being brutal and bloody. But who has time for such research when you’re busy writing the latest “me too” article about the brutal sport of Ultimate Fighting? Journalistic integrity? psh.

The article ends with a quote from a longtime boxing writing calling our sport “bar fight without the bottles”. Perhaps he should watch a UFC before stating something like this.

  1. […] On this week’s FOR show, Rob Sayers and I addressed the Wall Street Journal article by Peter Sanders on MMA in America. Rob’s response can be found here. However, on the radio show, I addressed a more important theme and question regarding what UFC President Dana White wanted to see as far as media coverage. […]

Bert Randolph Sugar also wrote the ‘legendary’ Wrestlecrap Wrestling book “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Pro Wrestling” along with Captain Lou Albano. Can we really take what Sugar has to say seriously anymore, anyway?

hi my name is forrest cable, i am 15 years old and mma is my favorite sport. I have been tranning in it for about 7 years and watching it for about 9 years, and in those 9 years i have never see this so called bloodthirsty,“human cockfighting” that this Mr. Peter Sanders said he seen. I beleve mr. pete is one of those ritch, big time boxing fans who is scared that the amazing sport of mma will take over. but untill that day comes, i expect there will be more and more leters and article bashing the fight world and trying to get it band.
