Legislation proposed to ban MMA in Hawaii

By Zach Arnold | January 29, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

Peter Boylan reports in the Honolulu Advertiser that Democratic state representative Tommy Waters has introduced legislation to ban MMA on the island of Hawaii.

Waters, D-51st (Waimanalo, Lanikai), has introduced a House bill calling for a ban on all forms of extreme combat.

He said he wrote the bill after attending neighborhood board meetings in Waimanalo where parents told him their children were staging “ultimate fights” after school and getting hurt. In the language of the bill, Waters says extreme combat promotes an environment that is “instilling violence in the mindset of a youth.”

So when are they going to ban Boxing & Pro Wrestling, then? Obviously, if it’s ‘for the children!’, then both of them should be banned as I’ve seen far more young kids slugging it out in playground brawls or trying to hit that piledriver or whatever than I have seen people trying to apply an Omaplata on his dummy partner/friend.

This is probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. Thank you Tommy Waters, my IQ just dropped ten points from ocularly absorbing your idiocy.

This is typical of the US Government though unfortunately. NO ONE should be big, strong, or combat-savvy. Only bad guys do that stuff.

I’m surprised no one tried this with backyard wrestling first. But then again, thats “fake” so our kids couldn’t possibly be getting hurt doing that.

Five bucks says that those kids are getting more inspiration watching Fight Club than MMA.

  4. […] First it was Hawaii, and then it was Iowa. Now, a new development in Iowa has State Rep. Paul Wilderdyke attempting to pass legislation to ban minors from seeing MMA shows. Wilderdyke is the same man who attempted last month to pass state legislation to ban amateurs from MMA competition, increase licensing fees, and deregulate the industry. The Quad-City Times has more on this story. Some of the quotes from Wilderdyke must be read to be believed. […]

  5. Meeks says:

This man is retarded. It is the parents fault for not knowing were there children are after school. It is also the parents fault for not enrolling their little bad ass child into a properly sactioned MMA school or martial arts program in which he/she could learn the principles, rules, guidelines, and the way of life that each martial artitist must learn. Its sucks to have people in power who have no grasp of the real situation at hand. He should be banning stupid parents from breeding.
