Los Angeles Times discusses MMA in California

By Zach Arnold | December 28, 2005

Print Friendly and PDF

In Wednesday’s edition of the LA Times newspaper, Alan Abrahamson has an article about California regulating MMA so that events will start taking place in 2006. Nate Quarry is mentioned a lot in the article, mainly as the article’s storyline theme in terms of fighting and also what happens to someone who takes a beating in a fight.

Page two of the article goes into detail about the rules that the California State Athletic Commission passed in terms of what format MMA shows can go under (i.e. cage instead of a ring, how many rounds, etc.) A quick quote from PRIDE’s US office is also attributed in the article.

Unfortunately, the man that we at Fight Opinion have nicknamed “The American media’s MMA boogeyman,” Dr. Peter Carmel, has surfaced again. He’s quoted in the LA times in the follow paragraph:

Peter Carmel, a New Jersey neurosurgeon and American Medical Assn. trustee, isn’t buying it. The AMA has called for boxing and mixed martial arts to be banned on the grounds that their primary goal, Carmel said, is to “to damage, maim or incapacitate your opponent.”

The article, in whole, is a very good newspaper piece in terms of laying out the facts in a truthful manner. Abrahamson deserves some applause for the article.

Gotta love how that even though Carmel always talks about how brutal it is everytime he is contacted about MMA but never ever backs it up with any proof of th brutality. Shoot, he doesn’t even explain why he thinks its so awful.

I hereby proclaim that chess is brutal and detromental to society!

If he can make pointless statements, so can I.

  2. Luke says:

Good article. Mr. Abrahamson deserves credit for writing a largely accurate article about UFCs rising popularity. Mr. Carmel needs to provide some evidence for his claims.
