UFC, Dana White, Brock Lesnar dominate media headlines again

By Zach Arnold | November 19, 2008

The Toronto Sun: UFC bustin’ down the door (an effort to get MMA legalized in Ontario)

t marked, according to White, an acknowledgement of the fan base for the sport in these parts and a launching point from where he intends to put the boots to the powers that be that deny his sport its legitimacy.

“I’m going to move here, I’m going to live here until it’s done,” White enthused. “I’m going to be sitting on their porch every day.

“There’s no reason for Canada (outside of Montreal) not to accept this sport. I don’t know how we can be denied. Toronto is like the mecca (of the sport).”

Tim Smith (New York Daily News): Boxing facing toughest test – Ultimate fighting

Paulie Malignaggi and Ricky Hatton, a couple of former junior welterweight boxing champions, will meet in a 12-round match at the MGM Grand on Saturday night. Ticket sales are sluggish. A large contingent of British fans (Hatton is from Manchester) won’t be coming as it has for past Hatton fights in Vegas because the British pound has taken a beating in the economic downturn.

This is the biggest example yet that boxing and mixed martial arts are different sports with different audiences. All comparisons should end now. It also points out how Pay-Per-View has sapped the life out of boxing, a sport that thrived when it was available on free network TV.

The Boston Herald: Stephen Neal, Brock Lesnar recall ‘99 NCAA title match

The Los Angeles Times: Eric Gomez of Golden Boy says former UFC Heavyweight star Andrei Arlovski will make boxing debut in 2009

Matthew Hurley (Seconds Out): A Boxing Scribes Night with the UFC (including stories from fans in Massachusett relating to no interest in boxing and a ton of interest in UFC)

George Willis (The New York Post): Randy Couture would extend career if it meant he could fight at MSG

Josh Gross (Sports Illustrated): Interview with Greg Nelson, trainer of Brock Lesnar, telling SI why he always believed so much in Lesnar as a legitimate MMA prospect

The writer is forgiven for calling the UFC middelweight champ “Andrew Silva” since he admits he just doesn’t get MMA. However, it was a thoughtful and introspective comparison of the two sports, perhaps sobering and fatalistic in its view of boxing.

I have to say this, though, boxing writers are still far superior in their essay-style writings. MMA writers still have much to go in order to catch up with them.

I watched the Lesnar-Couture fight again. Randy didn’t duck the overhand right, he ducked the left jab feint, then got knocked over by the overhand right. Randy didn’t get caught, he KTFO by a superior striker.
