Media heat-up for IFL & UFC

    By Zach Arnold | September 18, 2006

    By Zach Arnold

This weekend is going to be action-packed for MMA, as UFC 63 takes place in Anaheim, California with Matt Hughes vs. BJ Penn. carlos Arias in The Orange County Register has a preview for the upcoming show. Pat Miletich, who normally would be in Matt’s corner, will instead be at the IFL event in Moline, Illinois to fight against Renzo Gracie. The IFL show is also getting coverage by MMA writer Neil Davidson in the Canadian Press. Davidson also has a profile piece on Gareb Shamus, the CEO of the IFL. Houston Chronicle writer Steve Sievert is ready.

Which event are you more interested in?

And to throw PRIDE into the mix, Shogun & Vanderlei have signed to be involved in the new “Never Submit” movie.

Is PRIDE doing a reality TV show?

    By Zach Arnold | September 17, 2006

    By Zach Arnold

Japanese blogger Gryphon has picked up on a lead that Ed Fishman, the rumored Las Vegas backer for PRIDE, is going to try to pitch a new PRIDE reality show for TV in America.

If this is true, it makes PRIDE look like a copycat to UFC as far as what PRIDE’s American mindset is. UFC was on Fox Sports Net several years ago, then PRIDE goes on board to FSN. UFC has a couple of years of success with their reality show, now PRIDE apparently wants to get into reality TV. Will it work as well for PRIDE as it has for UFC?

Meanwhile, Daily Sports indicates that DSE is trying to get Mike Tyson to fight for them on New Year’s Eve — but the fight won’t happen in Japan, and instead will have to occur in another country (not Japan).

Update: Nikkan Sports has comments from Nobuhiko Takada about Tyson’s first appearance in PRIDE, which will happen on 10/21 in Las Vegas. Takada says that Tyson will appear at the show and cut a promo (microphone performance), but will not fight on the card. The plan is for Tyson to make his debut on New Year’s Eve.

Update II: As Gryphon noted in the comments section, Ed Fishman did an interview with Kami no Puroresu (the media publication ran by Noboru Yamaguchi that is a friendly PRIDE media outlet). The publication (in their teaser) said that they interviewed Fishman in his “luxurious home” in Las Vegas. Fishman is being marketed in the interview as “the man responsible for PRIDE’s advancement in America.” Fishman said in the interview that he is attempting to get PRIDE-themed slot machines created.

Seiji Sakaguchi's son's Pancrase debut makes top headlines on Yahoo Japan
Seiji Sakaguchi’s son’s Pancrase debut makes top headlines on Yahoo Japan

    By Zach Arnold

Yukio Sakaguchi, the 33-year son of former New Japan Pro-Wrestling President Seiji Sakaguchi, made his amateur debut on Saturday at Pancrase’s Differ Ariake show. He won his amateur fight by KO. There are big plans by Pancrase for him to make his pro-debut in November at a big Ryogoku Kokugikan event for Pancrase.

Seiji Sakaguchi was a famous pro-wrestler in Japan who came in with a judo background. He worked with many big names in the wrestling industry, including Antonio Inoki & Riki Choshu. The Sakaguchi name has some good marketing value with Japanese fight fans.

MMA being sanctioned in Washington DC

    By Zach Arnold | September 16, 2006

    From the Washington Post:

The D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission on Thursday took the first step toward sanctioning mixed martial arts in the District by unanimously approving a local promoter’s plan to put on a series of events.

Called the Mixed Martial Arts Championship, the promotion is aimed at tapping into the burgeoning local martial arts scene and providing a home for some of the city’s top fighters who normally travel to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and other brawling centers to find work.

    UFC media round-up

    By Zach Arnold | September 15, 2006

The Houston Chronicle has an interesting post about Dana White’s reaction to Silva vs. Mirko in the PRIDE ring. Yes, Mr. White apparently is paying close attention to PRIDE these days. Definitely a must-read link.

Also, Dave Doyle has two good articles (here and here), detailing some quotes he did in an interview with Georges St. Pierre.

    Meltzer weighs in on CSAC

    By Zach Arnold | September 15, 2006

    By Zach Arnold

On this week’s Fight Opinion Radio show, Erin Bucknell discussed the Shannon Ritch vs. Brian Ebersole fight that took place at The Malice at the Palace event in San Francisco this past weekend. The California State Athletic Commission claims that the fight was worked and both fighters were suspended.

Bucknell says that she didn’t think the fight was a work, and now Dave Meltzer has weighed in (on Thursday’s Figure Four Daily audio show). Meltzer said that he did not think the fight was a work (he was also at the show). However, he feels that Armando Garcia will not overturn the suspensions.

We will try to get an interview with Brian Ebersole for the next Fight Opinion Radio show. Will the suspensions be challenged in court?
