WFA aims for pro-wrestling fans

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

WFA President Jeremy Lappen comments: “Pro wrestling’s audience is waning,” Lappen said. “I think boxing’s audience is waning. I think those people are still out there. They’re just looking for something else to watch. I think what they’re going to watch is this.” The fighters don’t seem to mind the extra attention and appear more […]

Update on ECC 3 show

Monday, July 17th, 2006

The Chronicle Herald newspaper (in Halifax) reports that ECC 3 promoter Peter Martell wants elbow strikes (similar to what you see in UFC) to be allowed. Suffice to say, the local media in Halifax is taking this request as Martell trying to add blood and violence to the event.

Stupid human tricks

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

By Zach Arnold In the past few weeks, we’ve heard promos from both Kurt Angle (WWE) and Rhyno (TNA – video of his open challenge here) talking about how they would accept any challengers from a 4-sided, 6-sided, or 8-sided ring. This, of course, has set off a fury on MMA boards and has pro-wrestling […]

What mainstream media coverage looks like

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

By Zach Arnold I looked around for a media report to see if Mike Kyle appeared at the Boise (Idaho) MMA show on Saturday night (and he didn’t), and what I found was this article reviewing the show. Actually, it was more or less commentary disguised as actual coverage of the show (and negative). The […]

Developing revisionist history

Friday, July 14th, 2006

By Zach Arnold On Friday, Josh Gross wrote an article on Sherdog titled Liddell vs. Silva: Why now? talking about the upcoming co-promotional matchmaking between PRIDE & UFC. The PRIDE source Gross quotes (and doesn’t dispute in the article) is engaged in amazing spin-doctoring, to the point that you start laughing at the claims being […]

The return of Mike Kyle?

Friday, July 14th, 2006

By Zach Arnold Update (8 PM EST): FredEttish in the comments section notes that Kyle has been pulled off the Idaho card. The awareness raised by MMA fans to the athletic commission apparently worked. This Saturday night in Idaho, there will be a big MMA event taking place at Qwest Arena with an expected full […]

PRIDE 9/10 Saitama

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

The promotion announced Mirko Cro Cop vs. Vanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as the semi-finals of the open-weight GP tournament, which take place on 9/10 at Saitama Super Arena.

IFL on Rogers Sportsnet

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

By: Luke Nicholson Fight Report has a story on the IFL signing a television deal with Rogers Sportsnet, out of CANADA~!, to air their originally aired programming from FSN. This is an interesting move for both parties.  Obviously the IFL has expanded their reach, but its interesting for Rogers Sportsnet which doesn’t air a lot […]

Shukan Playboy: The bubble is bursting

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

By Zach Arnold This week’s edition of Shukan Playboy has a four-page spread titled who killed martial art movement? in English next to Japanese text asking what killed the Japanese kakutougi (MMA) boom. It’s a fairly complete article in terms of writing, with numerous sportswriters being quoted and all the facts being accurate. The main […]

Boston Globe article on UFC

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

By Zach Arnold Update: Jeff Thaler responds. Ron Borges, one of the more famous mainstream media boxing writers, attended the UFC 61 show and filed a report in the Boston Globe newspaper. (A second article by Borges can be found here.) For those who have been frustrated about the way the media covers the “transformation” […]

Being dealt a bad hand

Monday, July 10th, 2006

There are wire reports today that state that American legislators are going to attempt to stop the flow of money to offshore companies that provide online gambling services to American citizens. The LA Times reports has more on this story. If such legislation is passed, it would deal a blow to people who are involved […]
