As far as Couture/Toney being in the semi-main event slot, I don’t know if that’s the right match position or not. I understand that there’s a possibility that the Maynard fight will go the distance, but if Couture loses to Toney then the arena will be buzzing about that during the main event.
If you are wondering whether or not that fight will be marketed as MMA vs. Boxing, the answer is yes. Pick up a copy of UFC’s newest magazine and you’ll see this: “Who’s afraid of a boxer?” then “RANDY COUTURE” and “Captain America settles the MMA vs. boxing debate.” I personally think seeing “PRIDE 20 Greatest Moments” on the UFC magazine front cover is funny.

Penn over Edgar by submission
Couture over Toney by old school can opener rudimentary embarrassment
Florian over Maynard by TKO (but won’t be shocked if Maynard won)
Marquardt over Palhares by TKO
Diaz over Davis by decision
Wow. I pretty much knew the fight cards, but I didn’t really think about them all being in August. It’s looking like the best month for MMA fans ever.
I love how people are actually repeating (not saying you Zach) the “this will settle the mma vs. boxing debate”.

Right. A shot joke of a boxer who’s 40lbs heavier than his best weight class and who hasn’t been relevant as an elite boxer since he fought Roy Jones (if anyone pulls the “he held the WC3P-0 heavyweight title” argument out I will give Mel Gibson your cell number) against Randy freakin’ Couture.
That makes about as much sense as claiming Bernard Hopkins winning a bare knuckle boxing match against Ken Shamrock settled the argument.
I am so pumped for this card.
I could care less about the boxer vs. MMA debate. Boxing is an effective striking form that is adapted to MMA by the right fighter can lead to great things. Just like wrestling, BJJ, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. But boxing is no more a dominant fighting art as anything else. And right now wrestling is king until proven otherwise (but still not perfect).
I am so happy that you did not find something to complain about 45 Huddle. That is a rare sight indeed. In all seriousness, is this the type of card that you want to see? I am not saying that as a means to set you up and say that this card sucks (i have no opinion on it either way). I was just curious to see if this is how you want MMA cards to look.
It’s a good card structure.
Title fight and #1 contender fight on the same card. A freakshow but still interesting fight to bring more interest. And I love the style match-up between Diaz and Davis for the show opener.
So if they had more shows like this I would not complain. The freakshow doesn’t need to be there, but a fight like Hughes/Almeida is another example of a strong 3rd best fight on the card.
Basically my thought wavelength…boxing vs. mma is a stupid comparison vis “who is better”. My bet is that a mixed martial arts fighter will most likely be a better mixed martial arts fights and a boxer will be a better boxer. Trying to cross compare for supremacy is useless.
I realize a lot of people want to make the comparison because it’s apt to compare the two sports in the business realm, but it doesn’t really hold up.
In the end it makes the same amount of sense to me as Roger Goodell saying, “That Usain Bolt isn’t a real athlete, all he does is sprint – he’s nowhere near as good of an athlete as my football players, like Larry Fitzgerald! And to prove it we’re going to have that Bolt clown come and play football to prove it!”
It’s funny about the PRIDE stuff, ala best of PRIDE and UFC kind of adopting it into it’s own history, because it’s almost exactly the same thing when WWF bought WCW for wrestling fans. It’s weird, as someone who was a PRIDE fan, it’s still a little bizarre.
