(Boxing) The end of the line for Clinton Woods

By Zach Arnold | August 28, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

Tonight on ESPN2, the network aired a live boxing telecast from the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. The semi-main event featured veteran British fighter Clinton Woods against 27-year Tavoris Cloud and the two men were fighting for the IBF Light Heavyweight title. In the end, the fight between the two men wasn’t really much of a contest. Woods looked slow and sluggish while Cloud pretty much did what he wanted to do. Despite not getting a knockout finish, Cloud dominated the fight from start to finish and won the title. After the fight, media reports surfaced that Woods would retire. The irony coming out of the fight is that Cloud is challenging Chad Dawson to fight some younger fighters instead of Antonio Tarver.

In the main event, Juan Urango defeated Randall Bailey to retain his IBF Jr. Welterweight Title. Bailey knocked down Urango in R6, but Urango came back from the knockdown and punished Bailey until Bailey’s corner stopped the fight.

  1. Fluyid says:

Was this show any good? It was coming on as I was walking about the door.

I know they were supposed to do a segment on the screwjob that Texas put on Paulie Malignaggi.

  2. Chris says:

I thought the show was strong, and it was a strong showing by Cloud. Clinton Woods was the right opponent at the right time. But I mean that in a good way. Even at the age of 37, he is still a very tough. He came to compete and provided a good learning experience for a talented prospect.

I don’t think Cloud is ready for Chad Dawson yet. But he did a lot of good things in this fght. He’s got some pop in his hands and throws good combinations. The fact that he does not neglect working shots to the body is also a plus. Now he needs to tighten up that defense. I’m very interested to see how he develops his game from here.

  3. MK says:

Solid event, just goes to show that if ESPN would spend a little more money they could put on much better cards.

Cloud has legit power and can compete with the top light heavyweights now, but its also good that he can keep on improving. He has faced only two legitimate opponents but done very well. Keeping active will be important, can’t sit around waiting again.

Urango has to be one of the most boring sluggers in boxing today, but I would love to see him up against Maidana or even shop worn Torres.

Atlas is getting more and more unbearable, its even worse when Tessitore is not around.

  4. Fluyid says:

I have never brought that up, but Atlas has always sort of nagged at me. I’m sure in the overall balance he’s a good spokesman for boxing and good advocate, but there’s just something there that bothers me a tiny bit.

Going back a ways, I remember seeing him at some amateur tournaments and he was one of those guys who walked around looking all self-important. Guys like Emmanuel Steward, who had already accomplished tons by then, were very unpretentious and very genuine, but you always had these guys who for some reason tried to act like they were very important and serious. Atlas was one of them.

  5. matthew says:

Try playing Fight Night 4. Teddy just rambles on about anything but boxing just like in real life. He uses the most of the wall metaphors to describe whats going on, but they don’t help you understand whats going on, they just confuse you.Cloud looked good, Woods was game but over matched. Urango is very boring, just plodding forward and swinging wildly.

  6. Chuck says:

I saw the fights, good stuff overall. Cloud is good, but he tends to ditch defense in favor of throwing a hundred punches a round. I was surprised the judges had the fight much closer than it should have (116-112 by all three judges).

The main event was good and wild. Good to see Urango has heart and a strong will, because he never showed it before that I saw. I though Bailey had Urango in the sixth, but man was I wrong.

  7. 45 Huddle says:

Tessitore never came from boxing. He was a sports guy from one of the Connecticut News Stations I believe. He likely got the job due to ESPN being in Bristol, CT.

He actually has done a good job all considering. And I agree about Teddy Atlas. Something is off about that guy. And he gets annoying to listen to.
