Pacquiao vs. Hatton is officially canceled; what’s next for both men?

By Zach Arnold | January 21, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

Start with this Los Angeles Times article about Richard Schaefer, the Golden Boy promoter, calling the fight off on behalf of Ricky Hatton. What could go wrong?

Schaefer said he has canceled a press tour with the fighters to promote Pacquiao-Hatton in the U.K. next week, and that he feels as burned as he did about two years ago when Pacquiao accepted a briefcase filled with $250,000 in cash from Schaefer and De La Hoya to join Golden Boy Promotions, then recanted and signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions.

Bob Arum is not a happy man. Look at that picture of Arum. Remember how he claimed that Dubai was going to be The Next Big Market and that this fight could draw there? Yep.

Questions are being asked in the British media about Manny Pacquiao and whether or not he will be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. I love this jab at Pacquiao by Gareth A. Davies in the The London Telegraph:

There are several theories surrounding Pacquiao, one of which is that, in spite of having been guaranteed over $11 million (£8m) from the fight by Arum, the world No 1 pound-for-pound fighter does not fancy a contest against Hatton’s bustling, aggressive all-action style, and may be talking behind the scenes with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

As to what Hatton will do next, the Los Angeles Times indicates that he’s considering a fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Get a load of these comments from Pacquiao’s attorney. Manny… wants to go to school. Ron Borges tries to justify Pacquiao’s financial stance in the negotiations with Ricky Hatton.

  1. Dave says:

Of course a Brit won’t be happy about this, but when you think about it, a fight with Hatton isn’t worth as much as a fight with Floyd.

  2. Ivan Trembow says:

I agree that this makes sense if Pacquiao has a fight on the table with Mayweather.

Also, that quote from Gareth Davies is hilarious. Pacquiao vs. Hatton would likely be a one-sided fight, but it wouldn’t be the slow and clinching-dependent Ricky Hatton who would be dominating his opponent.

I really hope Hatton doesnt face Oscar next. I dont want to see that!!!

  4. Rohan says:

Well Pacquiao has thrown away a money fight and I can book away for the late May UFC Vegas card.

Remember De La Hoya/Mayweather wasn’t a PPV fight in the UK (not enough interest), and they had to double header De La Hoya/Mayweather with Amir Khan’s comeback fight to put it on PPV – and that combined drew flies. Where as Hatton is a Hogan/Tyson/Austin sized draw on UK PPV in a big fight, and can pull decent numbers in his sleep.

I’ll predict now a Mayweather/Pacquiao card to do 600,000 on PPV (with limited rights fees from foreign broadcasters), with the MGM needing to be papered to get a capacity crown.

Either of them with Hatton would do at least 1.2m worldwide PPV, with a sold out MGM.

  5. Chris says:

I’m surprised that they could not come to terms. But Pacquiao/Mayweather still does big business, because you are going to draw in three sets of fans.

You are going to have the hardcore Mayweather, and Pacquiao fans. Plus the hardcore boxing fans that believe that Pacquiao/Mayweather has more merit in terms of being a competitive fight.
