Quote of the Day – Dave Meltzer
By Zach Arnold | September 3, 2008

From the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer:
It is very possible, and possibly even likely, that in the not too distant future, Elite, Affliction and DREAM will be gone, and UFC will be able to pick up any top fighter they want, and to do so without changing their current pay scale.

Let us not hope so (as long as our ideas of a monarchy are bad).
Well, lets hope that someone puts a ton of money in Strikeforce in the future…
I think DREAM will stick around. We will see about EXC and Affliction though. And maybe someday Strikeforce can expand and go against UFC. But they should take baby steps, just like they are doing now.
No company will ever be able to compete with the UFC in North America as long as Dana White/Zuffa are in charge of the company.
Ever is a long time.
I blame mma fans and mma media as much as any of these organizations for failure. Everyone, save a few with UFC blinders on, wants multiple organizations for the health and future of the sport. However, with each and every event that is non-UFC that comes along, it gets torched and burned by everyone in sight. How can new or indifferent fans be attracted to take interest in these events when all they hear is bad reports of how lame the card is or when they’ll go out of business.
I say shame on the media for igniting the flames of failure on these organizations before they ever get a chance to get started. I am an mma fan that enjoys watching fights and could care less what channel it’s on or who the promoter is. Having not missed a single event from any major promoter (UFC, Pride, IFL, K-1, Dream, Sengoku, Elite XC, Strikeforce, Affliction, WFA) and seeing a majority of events from many other promotions (Shooto, King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge, Hook N Shoot and many others), there have been many fantastic matches NOT in the UFC. If you missed it because of your petty politics, I feel sorry for you.
I enjoy the UFC but no competition equals death. Study economics and business 101.
Carolina Fight Promotions in NC will be holding their 2nd Triangle show this October 11 at the RBC Center, a major arena in Raleigh, NC. I’ve heard that they expect 7,000 to 10,000 fans at a show that will feature 7 amateur and, 7 pro fights. All the fighters will be from the Carolinas and, Virginia.
If Affliction and the rest fall, never fear, MMA will survive if there is a market for it and, if it has promoters that understand their target market.
