Tim Sylvia: Not a fan of Jeff Monson

From Dave Doyle’s weekly Fox Sports column:
I’ve heard about some of the things he’s said and I think he’s a piece of s—,” said Sylvia, who defends his title against Monson at UFC 65 at Arco Arena in Sacramento on Nov. 18. “He disrespects our soldiers and our country and our President. I’ve been out to talk to soldiers and they deserve all the support they can get. I want to go out and teach this guy a lesson.”
“The guy can fight,” said Sylvia. “He’s a better fighter than he gets credit for. I don’t care for what he stands for but that doesn’t mean I’m not taking him seriously as an opponent.”
Speaking of Pat Miletich’s camp, Sherdog reports that Matt Hughes is considering retirement after finishing out his UFC contract. Real sentiments or leveraging his potential bargaining power to get more money per fight in the future?
Ivan Trembow has an update about ESPN’s attempts at banning UFC commercials.
Tito Ortiz will be in Texas today, making it unlikely that he will get face time on TV tonight for UFC’s event (unless it’s done via satellite).

Retiring becuse there’s no one left to beat fits fine with Hughes’ ego. He’d damn sure come back after a couple of years though. But hopefully he’s just being smart and is setting up a bidding war for his services once his contract is up.
Has Monson said something bad about american soldiers, or is Sylvia giving a political spin response to general critique of the war? I’m asking this with objective intentions to just get clarification.
I haven’t heard Monson talk bad about the soldiers? The government yeah, but we’re all intitled to that. I think Sylvia is trying to rally the rednecks without really putting into thought into realizing he just made this look like Steiner/Nowinski. A pro wrestling match that tried to forcibly shoehorn politics and ended up stinking the place up so bad, the E had to end it as soon as possible and as far down the radar as possible.
On the other hand, Sylvia’s not the kind of guy I see picking up a Thomas Pynchon or Ann Rynd novel. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Monte Cox has said that they pretty much get what they want when they renegotiate Matt’s contract. Which would mean that they set the bar kind of low. And I think that fits Matt’s character from what we know. Setting up leverage for tough negotiations does not.
So when he says retirement, I think he means it.
On Sherdog.com Hughes left it open that he would maybe like to take on Silva at MW to try and be the first to hold two titles at once. Perosnally I dont like Hughes (though I deeply respect his talent) but I would love to see Hughes (if) he gets by GSP, obviously get by either Serra/Lutter then in his last fight face Silva…would be a nice cap to a very good career.
Personally, i think he’s ducking Penn for the rubber match. Penn outclassed him in every way until his fluke injury, and Hughes was lucky Penn didn’t slap that submission 20 seconds before he did in the 2nd round.
Sylvia’s an idiot. Fuck the government, fuck the country, fuck the war, FUCK THE TROOPS.
