Boxing: Audley Harrison loses… again

For the small amount of boxing fans who come to this web site, ESPN2 on Friday night aired a fight between Audley Harrison and Dominick Guinn from Rancho Mirage, CA. It was billed in the press as a make-or-break fight for both men.

Guinn won after 10 rounds by a unanimous decision in a rather comfortable fashion. Harrison is now 19-2, but the TV commentators (Joe Tessitore & Teddy Atlas) pretty much made it sound like the end of Harrison as a serious challenger. After the bell rang to end the 10th round, the fans in the crowd started chanting “USA! USA! USA!” in support of Guinn.

  1. Tomer says:

That fight, with the exception of the last 30 seconds where Guinn & Harrison began teeing off on one another, was horrendous. Harrison just added more fuel to the ‘Fraudley’ fire by showing he couldn’t pop the crap out of Dominick ‘I was arguably beaten by Friday freaking Ahunanya’ Guinn on the outside and maybe even stop him eventually. Even his trainer was going “What the hell is he doing?!” when Teddy & Joe spoke with him during Round 8 (?).

In any case, Guinn didn’t look particularly amazing as well, and at best is probably a Top 25 or 30 HW even in this horrendous HW division. If a 37 year old bloated Middleweight in James Toney could beat him clearly, I seriously doubt he’ll ever get close to a title.

  2. Mr.Roadblock says:

Audley Harrison is joke. He has no power, no speed and seems incapable of stringing together combinations. The comparrisons between he and Lennox Lewis are apt except Lennox did have some power. Both fight a clutch and grab, safe style.

  3. Tomer says:

Well, that and Lennox actually beat all the top fighters of his era and is easily a Top 15 all-time HW whereas Harrison lost to Danny ‘I can be pretty decent when my mind is focused, which is 47% of the time’ Williams. And at least Lennox used his height to his advantage (like in the Tua beating), whereas Audley seemed to enjoy just standing there and taking abuse from Dominick Guinn.

  4. Roadblock says:

That’s true Tomer but I hate that style of fighting preached by Emmanuel Stewart and I hate that he’s got Vladimir Klitschko doing it now. Stand and jab your smaller opponent then tangle his arms up when he gets close.

I’m biased against Lewis because I flat out can’t stand him. He stole a decision from Holyfield in the 1st fight and he beat a broken down drugged up Tyson. He got lucky the Vitali fight was stopped then he ran away which is a sissy move in and of itself. He never really fought anyone who will be remembered besides those three.

  5. Chuck says:

Roadblock, the first Holyfield/Lewis fight was a draw, and most thought that Lewis deserved the decision. I saw last night’s fights, and they were alright. The Jason Gavern fight (he won by unanimous decision) was good. Gavern is a Scranton, Pa fighter (I am born and bred from Scranton, Pa) and I met Gavern some years ago. Very nice guy. For some reason he kept calling me “George” but that is besides the point.

The last minute or so of the Harrison/Guinn fight was fantastic. Besides that, mediocre at best. Atleast Guinn showed that he gave a dman about wanting to win. Harrison can be great, but he is just careless and lazy.
