Schwarzenegger criticized for appearance at MMA show

Things just got more interesting for Friday’s Gracie Fighting Championships show in Ohio. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will make an appearance at Friday’s MMA event in Columbus, Ohio at the Nationwide Arena.
And this has the usual suspects up in arms.
The man we nicknamed “The American media’s MMA boogeyman” on December 21, 2005 makes an appearance (via quotes in the infamous Sacramento Bee article) in the Chronicle article.
Another critic speaks her mind. Money quote from the article:
“What a photo op — to have Arnold with some bloody competitors who have just beaten each other up for entertainment,” crowed Democratic activist Gloria Nieto. ‘That’s exactly the image we need for California.”
The article is a good insight into the same old playbook that critics of MMA have been using for over a decade now in America. Thankfully, no one has told them to update the playbook — yet.
