UFC 57 report
By Zach Arnold | February 4, 2006

Rob Sayers & Jason Adams are watching the show tonight. I am not sure if they will do live commentary on the event or if they will come back with a post-show reporter. Luke Nicholson also is watching the show and will have a report with his notes as well. Either way, keep your eyes on Fight Opinion tonight.

Guess my concern about Frank Mir being booked against Marcio Cruz being a dangerous scenario came true. Not really a shock considering Mir was out for 18 months and he was fighting an ADCC champion-level submission artist (who apparently could also deal significant damage with his striking). My suggestion for Dana White: if you have a big money fight and there’s a risk one of the guys will get upset in a tune-up fight, screw the tune-up and just toss him into that fight. That way, you don’t risk the payoff (though the fight may be one sided).
Mir needed a tune up against someone like Eilers or even Silva instead of Cruz who they vastly underestimated. Eilers would have been a good win for Mir and then I’d do the immediate Arlovski/Mir money fight. Now Mir needs to be rehab’d just like Crocop after he walked into Randleman’s fist. After seeing Frank’s will fizzle when he turned into a crimson mask, I wonder how much he really wants this game anymore. The ref gave him more time than they normally do and the fight should have been stopped sooner. Frank basically “submitted” by not fighting. It was his way out of the fight. Had he tried harder the match and damage would have continued. Hard to blame him–if I was bleeding a Terry Funk gusher and eating elbows, I’d be ready to go to the after party too.
