Tuesday chalkboard: In their own words

By Zach Arnold | December 4, 2007

The StrikeForce 9/29 Playboy Mansion event on Yahoo.com reportedly drew a lot of eyeballs.

In the immortal words of one Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along?” Apparently not:

I felt like puking. Boxing promoter Lou DiBella once lashed out against MMA, calling it – predictably – “a human cockfight.” What an insult to cocks everywhere.

I hear quite a bit about how on can watch boxing and MMA, about how one can appreciate both sports.

Quite honestly, I can’t understand how. If you really appreciate boxing, then it seems to me you’d have to realize that MMA is not a complement to it. MMA is a bastard that removes the lab work from the Sweet Science, and steals valuable TV time from real pugilism.

An interview with RINGS veteran Lee Hasdell.

Luke O’Brien of Sports Illustrated asks some questions about Sammy Vasquez’s death. The article includes quotes from MMA Opinion, MMA Payout, and Bloody Elbow. Must-read article, including a note about changes the TDLR has instituted.

Under the radar: A new director at MAX Entertainment Holdings, Inc.

Get on the Melvin Manhoef bandwagon.

I probably won’t be around in time to post an update on the Sean Sherk appeals hearing with the CSAC, so feel free to keep up-to-date with the news headlines on the page (and feel free to post comments reacting to the decision).

  1. Fluyid says:

Those changes by the Texas Commission have been advertised as going into effect on December 1st for several months now. They are NOT a reaction to the death of Sammy Vasquez. They’ve been up on the Texas Commission site for a long time, first as “proposed changes” and then “coming changes.”

  2. The new director of MAX seems to be a good guy, I wonder if he knows what he’s getting into?

  3. Johnny P. says:

The article overall is very good and very fair, but something like this needs to find it’s way into the print version of SI to really gain some traction. It’s odd in this day and age that print still demands the respect, but most of us read the web versions of most print because it’s updated so much quicker.

  4. JThue says:

HAH, check out the new fist-banner at http://www.yarennoka.com/. Is Jimmy “Tweakmaster” Hart on their PR-team or something?

  5. Will says:

I was shocked by the SI.com article. I had honestly given up on ever seeing a fair and balanced MMA article in the mainstream press. Kudos to Luke O’Brien. I agree that the saddest part of this is that Sammy’s death is more about the sport than the man. God bless his family.
