Bob Arum’s idea of promoting an event

By Zach Arnold | June 13, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

A great article in The Chicago Sun-Times today, filled with quotes from boxing promoter Bob Arum on many topics.

First, on UFC ‘marketing’:

‘The UFC’s idea is to entertain the people, get them all hopped up, and that’s what younger people want,” he said. ”They don’t want a lot of sitting on their hands between rounds or between fights.

”We’ll have music going and a light show, pyrotechnics and girls dancing on platforms. We’ll have less time between fights. We’ll turn Allstate Arena into a nightclub.”

The girls-on-platforms thing hasn’t worked out so well for TNA. Second, Arum talks about the city of Chicago (where he is promoting a boxing match):

”I’m finally back in Chicago,” Arum said. ”It has great teams, and I’m sure it’s a great city, but it’s always been one of my least favorite places.”

Arum explained that in 1981, he brought a card featuring a heavyweight championship match between Mike Weaver and James ”Quick” Tillis, and a middleweight bout between Marvin Hagler and Mustafa Hamsho, to Rosemont Horizon. Arum said owners of the Stadium were mad the event was going to take place at their venue and somehow assembled a media boycott of the event.

”I did very poorly,” Arum said. ”It became an impossible place for me to work.

”I want people in Chicago to show me they’ve changed. We’ve done everything we could.”

  1. Ok Bobby. Have you ever seen a CURRENT UFC event?

  2. DarthMolen says:

Heh. “Art of War” uses the girls dancing on boxes for their events. I personally don’t like the concept but it seemed to work for some people there at the event and gave them something to watch in between fights.

  3. Jonathan says:

In 1967, I tried to stage a fight in Maine, but something went awry and now I do not do shows in Maine. I am waiting for the people of Maine to change and give me a chance to succeed.

That was total bullshit in my opinion, and I guess it is because he has no clue what he is talking about or doing in regards of MMA
