What Is a Conflict of Interest Statement

By Zach Arnold | April 13, 2022

Print Friendly and PDF

If there are no competing interests to explain, authors should attach a statement to the article to confirm that there are no relevant financial or non-financial competing interests to report. JOG was the general manager of the HRDP and received a part-time salary for this work. JR was Co-Chair of the Joint Committee of the HRDP Program. DoA served as co-chair of the HRDP Program Joint Committee. IW was a member of the HRDP Joint Programme Committee. The other authors have no conflict of interest to declare. [PMD] A competing interest, also known as a “conflict of interest,” may arise if you (or your employer or sponsor) have a financial, business, legal, or professional relationship with other organizations or the people who work with them that could influence your research. If there are potential conflicts of interest, we strongly recommend that any author identify and explain themselves clearly in order to avoid future investigations by the publisher. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has created an interesting form that can help with the automatic generation of disclosure (conflict of interest form). Some journals have specific requirements regarding the interests that must be disclosed and the date range that you must include (for example.B. conflicts within the last 3 years).

Carefully review the log requirements to ensure that you are providing the correct information. When choosing the conflicts of interest to disclose in a manuscript, you should consider whether that conflict is related to the work of that particular manuscript. You are under no obligation to disclose any unrelated interest or link. For example, if your manuscript describes a zebrafish study, you don`t need to disclose that you`re on the board of your local pantry. However, if your trial has tested a drug from Company A and you own shares of that company, you must disclose that compound. And yet, disclosure is absolutely necessary. It may be tedious, but it is certainly preferable to the consequences. With so many issues at stake, the conflict of interest process is crucial to ensuring the future of research integrity and public respect for science. Many research organizations have an annual disclosure process with the requirement that if a researcher`s relationship with an external organization changes, he/she must disclose it within 30 days. Some institutions require research-based disclosures, which must be submitted for each new grant application or project.

In all cases, individuals must disclose their interests before a study begins. *Please note that details of financial arrangements should not be disclosed when a competing interest is notified. If there are other interests that the reasonable reader thinks have influenced your research, you can also explain them. John Smith does not declare any conflict of interest. Jane Williams received a research grant from organization A. Mike Miller is an employee and owns shares of Company B. Many scientists, researchers and professionals may have potential conflicts of interest that could affect their research or could be considered as such. As a result, some SAGE journals require a formal declaration of conflicting interests, which makes it possible to make a statement in the published paginated article. *Please note that a conflict of interest declaration does not appear in journals that do not require a declaration of conflicting interests. If an explanation is required, the disclosure information should be specific and include any financial relationship that all authors of the article have with a sponsoring organization and the for-profit interests that the organization represents, as well as with any for-profit products discussed or implied in the text of the article.

Because conflicts of interest are common, they reach the level of concern when an observer questions whether the person`s behaviour or judgment was motivated by their competing interest. Competing interests do not imply wrongdoing, but could undermine the credibility and reliability of the journal. AIP Publishing aims to protect the integrity of journals through this policy. If you are submitting your article to a journal or publishing in a journal where you are required to make a declaration of conflicting interests, please include such a statement at the end of your manuscript after any acknowledgement of receipt and prior to confirmation of funding, notes (if any) and references under the heading “Declaration of Conflicting Interests”. If there is no conflict, please indicate that “the author or authors declare that there is no conflict of interest”. All authors have completed the form “Unified Competing Interests” at www.icmje.org/coi_disclosure.pdf (available upon request from the corresponding author) and declare: no support from any organization for the work submitted. RV and KL have conducted advisory projects for WHO on the registration of clinical trials; have no other financial relationship with organizations that may have an interest in the work submitted in the last 3 years; have no other relationship or activity that may appear to have influenced the submitted work. [PMD] Competing interests (p.B. personal, political, religious, academic) Please refer to each journal`s author`s guide for information on how to make an expression of interest for that journal. You must also include a corresponding disclosure statement with the text of your article. You can do this in conjunction with all the thanks and details of the funders. Competing interests may be financial or non-financial in nature.

In order to ensure transparency, associations that may be perceived by others as competing interests must also be declared. Full disclosure is required when submitting your work to a journal. The editor-in-chief of the journal will first use this information to make editorial decisions. You can then publish such disclosures to help readers evaluate the article. Or instead, the publisher may decide not to publish your article based on a declared competing interest. You can indicate competing interest in your cover letter or on the manuscript submission form in the journal`s online peer review system. This research is sponsored by [Company A] and may lead to the development of products that can be licensed to [Company B] in which I have a commercial and/or financial interest. I have fully disclosed these interests to Taylor & Francis and established an approved plan to manage potential conflicts arising from this agreement. Articles are evaluated fairly and are not necessarily rejected when competing interests are declared. ABC was the Director General of Organization A and received a part-time salary for this work. DEF sits on the board of directors of Journal X.

GHI has filed a patent for compound Y. The other authors have no conflict of interest to declare. According to the University of California, San Francisco, a conflict of interest is “a situation where financial or other personal considerations may affect a researcher`s professional judgment in conducting or reporting research.” It can exist in any type of research, be it humans, animals, chemicals, soil and so on. An author`s agreement is a statement to confirm that all authors have seen and approved the final version of the submitted manuscript. .
