Agreement Errors In Sentences

Passive constructions create more verbal and less precise sentences. The examples also show that when the subject contains both singular and plural names, it generally seems the most natural to place the plural noun closest to the verb. Compare the following sentences: To avoid confusing the reader, keep the associated ideas together – this advice is especially important in longer sentences. A run-on sentence is a sentence in which two or more independent clauses (sentences that could be isolated) are poorly fused. A subset of run-on phrases is the tear of the comma. Then, two independent clauses are linked by a comma. For example, it is a question of subject-word agreement in this independent clause: “The overall security of the city has improved considerably since it was hired.” The theme of security is simplified, which is a singular noun, so the verb must also be singular, which “improves” hurts and has “improved” the corrected verb. Sometimes the verb passes in front of the subject. However, the same rules still apply to the agreement: Bob is a singular third person name, and therefore the verb (drives) is singular. This harmony between the subject and the verb is called concordance.

For more information on the pronoun-antecedent agreement, visit Write for Business pages 325-326 and Write for Work pages 366-367. When checking, make sure you have a particular agreement on the indefinite pronouns in the last column. The following examples show how these pronouns can be singular or plural: To check out this difficult aspect of English grammar, take a look at our article on Pronomen Agreement. Subject-verbal chord errors occur when the scribe or spokesman uses the plural form of a verb, when the subject calls the singular form, or when the singular form of a verb is used, then the subject calls the plural form. “The subject does not agree with the verb,” is an example of a subject-verb agreement error. You would say, “The subject does not agree with the verb.” Use your verb to find your subject, then make sure you have used the right verb for the subject to find errors of subject agreement. Combine closely related clauses or phrases: “The refuge is 19 million hectares of pristine nature. The refuge is ecologically important because it is the breeding ground for a wide variety of migratory species. (The refuge, 19 million hectares of pristine nature, is an ecological breeding ground for many migratory species.) There are countless rules of grammar in the English language.
